Default IFC43 06/21/09: Art Deco

Chatter
Should I say Art DISCO!? Let's boogie.

Forgot I would need a title...best thing I could come up with at the moment of posting.

Where are my manners? We need introductions!

Introduction
Happy Father’s Day! It’s my pleasure to guest host today and present you with IFC43. I have a special thank you to Jennipher for allowing me to host and to my fellow scrappers for having me.

On Mother's Day, we went to see E.T. at the Historic State Theater in Elizabethtown, KY. On Father's Day, we went to Ryan's Steakhouse to eat. That place was hoppin'. We were herded in & out like cattle being worked. Food was good!

Where was I? Oh ok...Art Deco and the State Theatre. The State recently completed several years of restoration and renovation. It is now open. You can learn more about the Historic State Theater HERE.

Let's peek inside: MSM’s Historic State Theatre Inside

Sources of inspiration found

The State Theatre is decorated in the Art Deco style, a style that was prevalent between 1920 and 1939. It is sandwiched between the two World Wars. The Art Deco style is characterized by:
  • Angular, symmetrical and geometric designs - In the State, the stage is flanked by two Greek goddesses; one holding the mask of tragedy, the other comedy. The theater is a mirror image of itself, if you just put that mirror right down the center of the auditorium.
  • Stepped forms, sweeping curves, chevron patterns and sunburst motif - The State has sweeping curves in it's decor. You can see this in the murals on the side walls and in the relief sculptures on the ceiling. In the attached picture, you can see the stepped form in the design of the walls on the outside of the theater.
  • Bold colors - The State is painted in various shades of green and burgundy. Other colors characteristic of the Art Deco Style are yellow and turquoise.
  • Use of non-traditional materials - Art Deco Style includes the use of materials such as aluminum, marble, glass, stainless steel, plastic and/or inlaid wood.
My samples
I have created several layouts inspired by Art Deco style elements.

MSM’s Phillip & Grandma – utilizes sweeping curves. I used Sally’s sketch SBSC115 for this layout.

MSM’s Beautiful Blooms – utilizes flourishes to create sweeping curves.

MSM’s Me & My Dad – utilizes symmetry and bold colors.

MSM’s Arriving at the State Theatre - here’s another layout utilizing symmetry. The large paisleys in the DP create sweeping curves. The orange and burgundy provide bold colors against the lighter blues.

The challenge
Now it's your turn! Please use the keywords IFC43 on all layouts submitted for this challenge. Please remember to come back here and post a reply with a link to your layout so we can leave you some love.

You will find all submissions for this challenge HERE

Melissa thanks for guest hosting. This sounds like a great challenge. I have the next three days off so hopefully I can get to it soon!
