Default Stamping on Fabric

What is the best ink or technique to stamp on fabric that can be washed? I would love to do some burp cloths.

Istamped on fabris once using Stazon, SU Classic and SU Craft. After one washing, SU Craft is the only ink that stayed put.

Well, I don't know specifically what type of ink to use, but I thought I might mention that you should probably wash whatever you want to stamp prior to stamping and use minimal detergent and no fabric softener. When you do stamp, only stamp on a single layer of fabric. Put a scrap piece of cardboard or paper under it. I haven't inked fabrics, but I have painted on them and that's what I do. You may also have to heat set the design with a hot iron between a press cloth.

I have some pics of stamped ties on my blog today actually for Father's Day along with my tips for stamping on selecting fabrics for stamping projects, I used StazOn, but I have also used Palette before. I used to use SU! Craft before I found either of those two inks but they faded badly for me in the wash when I did T-shirts.

Versacraft is perfect for fabric - just iron it and it's permanent. It used to be sold with the name Fabrico until recently so you may still see some place with old stock of that name. It comes as full size pads, small cubes and in markers with a good range of colours. It's fine in laundry after you've set it by ironing.

Stazon is not recommended for fabric use, BTW. Although it says so on the pack, it doesn't say why so I e-mailed Tsukineko and asked. They said they believer that over time, the solvent used as the base of the ink will degrade the fibers in the fabric and may eventually destroy it. Probably not an issue for items intended to have a short life but best to avoid it if you want your fabric art to be around for a while.

HTH!

I use the SU! Craft Ink and heat set it with an iron (be sure to place a piece of copy paper over your art when ironing). Some fading may be determined by your water too.

I, too, use Palette inks. I heat set it with a heat tool or iron.

I've enjoyed stamping on fabric with good results using Tulip fabric paint* (picked up at HL or Michaels). I've always washed fabric first, stamped, heat set with an iron (how hot depends on fabric). Been great wash after wash.

Happy stamping!

*It mixes really well, too, to get that "just right" color you may be looking for.

Default stamping on fabric

If you want it fade proof and to stay, use acrylic paints with a fabric medium added (found at Walmart and JoAnns). Just mix the medium in your paint according to ratio (usually 3:1) dab on your stamp with a foam brush and stamp on your pre-washed, dried with no fabric softener fabric. I used a foam paper plate for my pallet and just threw it when done.

I did some t-shirts and they never faded or cracked off. This works best with bold stamps but I have used it with line art.

Smile Stamping on fabric

I love stamping on fabric. It's a great way to custom design bags. You can see one that I've done recently in my gallery .http://www.splitcoaststampers.com/ga...&ppuser=122516
I use a non-toxic Australian made fabric paint from Genesis Creations™. You squeeze a small amount out onto a palette and then use a small foam roller to roll it over the stamp. Then you just stamp away. When you are finished with the roller you put it in a small amount of water and then you can use this painty water to dye fabric. That's how I do the inside of my bags. No waste!

Absolutely gorgeous bag! I love to make bags, but have never tried stamping on the fabric! You have provided great inspiration. TFS.

I forgot to mention that I decided to try stamping on fabric to justify my large stamp collection! As if I need another way to justify buying more stamps! 2 step stamping works really well on fabric. Roses in winter is fabulous.

Just let me know what you want to know! It's as easy as stamping on paper.

I've done LOTS of burp cloths and have used both Palette and Fabrico/Versacraft. I really like the Versacraft/Fabrico better for coverage. Both stay put well after heat setting.

I am in the process of doing this right now. I have a onesie, and an old t-shirt I am practicing on, but it's still in process. I am stamping with Versacraft ink and that is working well. I noticed I don't like the fabric of the onesie so I may try to find something of better quality....it's too stretchy. But I have 2 more to see if I can accomplish with I want. Wish me luck. Once I get one that I like I will post a pic. But that could be awhile, LOL!!

Theat would be great to see Diane, I am thinking of buying those plain canvas totes and stamping one up for the beach. Also wouldn't those little Tilda girls, or Whiff of joy stamps look darling on a pillowcase or dresser scarf for a little girls room. I am just wondering about bleeding with the copics on fabric.
