Rods for Punches

I was looking on walmarts website, Can anyone tell me how far the rod should be from the wall to make it able to hold punches??

I was looking at this one, but I dont know if it would work.

Hi Melissa,

I'm not sure that the double rod your considering will work - but I've not tried it. I used towels rods/bars - much cheaper than what your considering. I purchased my at KMart. They are white metal and work great. You want it to stick out from the wall far enough to accomodate the thickness of the bottom handle of your punches and I think most any towel rod you would get would do that. HTH! Good luck with your project.

The rods I use come from Ikea and extend just about 2" from the wall. My SU! punches fit perfectly. They are $3.99 each ... much less than what you're considering.

Mine are also from Ikea, but only cost $2.99. They are called Bygel. They also have wonderful baskets that can hang from the rods for $2.99 also. Love Ikea!

I actually tried "double rods" from Bed Bath & Beyond originally but they did not work for the punches. I used these cheap rods from Linen N Things but have also seen them at Walmart & Bed Bath & Beyond.

If you have an IKEA close, they have great rods but if you have to have them shipped they are very expensive.

Good luck...I LOVE having the punches on the rods as it is great to see them!

I bought curtain rods at Big Lots for 1.99 each - they work well.

I too use white curtain rods. DH put up 5 of the for me and they work great. The whole project cost $8.

I use regular cafe rods from Walmart. However, get an extra bracket if you have a lot of punches so you can mount the bracket in the middle of the rod to hold the weight of the punches. I have a pic on my blog HERE and as you can see I need to get another bracket for the middle of my rods.

I bought the cheaper white curtain rods from Walmart as well...but I found that they had about a 3 inch space from the wall. While my largest punches could handle that, I wanted my mid-size punches to fit too. So I took them back and got some Kirsch rods that look just like them at JoAnns. They have only 1-3/4 inch space from the wall. As a bonus they were much heavier duty. The cost was 2.99 for the short rods that go up to something like 3 feet long.

I use rods that are 2 1/2" from the wall and love them for the bigger punches and some of the medium punches. Does anyone have any ideas for small SU and non-SU punches, EK corner punches or MS punches? They don't work so well on the rods. Maybe I just need to find some that are closer to the wall.

I love the Bygel products from Ikea! I have two long rails and two short rails to hang my big punches on. (I have a lot of punches!) I also have two wire baskets for my small and medium punches.

My brother-in-law mounted my cafe rods on one wall (of the hallway no less - I outgrew the craft room). On the other wall, for the non-lever punches, he mounted 3 pieces of wood 4 feet apart (3/4 inch 4 feet in length). Then he mounted aluminum flashing onto the wood (the wood. The punches "slide" over the flashing. I've got all my small Mcgill, EK, All Night, and other punches. Even my Fiskars with the handle grips. I love having all my punches in sight. I use them much more now that I know what I have!

I bought these at K-Mart too and they do work great. I use mine for my SU punches and all sizes fit perfectly.

I used a shoe storage hanger. It sits on 2 hooks on the wall, could be behind a door or anywhere and it has 20 clear pockets in it. I have a punch in each pocket and some have several in if small. It works brilliantly.

This is what I use too - mine is hanging on a door. Makes great use of what is usually unusable space!

I use cafe rods from Walmart, about $2 each. I bought the ones that can expand from 24 to 48 inches, but kept them at 24 inches to prevent them from sagging in the middle. Works GREAT. I was going to buy some online from IKEA (Bygel Rods) but the S&H cost more than the rods!

I recently googled "punch storage," and found several options. The one that I'm using: my husband attached rain gutters to the front of my built in bookcase shelves. The punches sit in there so nicely, and are within reach, AND rolls of ribbon also fit nicely. The gutters are like a white vinyl, weren't very expensive, and went up easily. I love them.

Thanks for those pictures! I know exactly what "flashing" is now and how to use it. I'm very visual and didn't "get it" until I saw your picture. I'm sure it doesn't help any that my husband isn't a handyman by trade.

You don't have to be a handman now that you've seen the pics. It's so easy. 3 pieces of wood - mounted vertically {or parallel} and then the flashing - mounted tightly across the 3 pieces of wood. SIMPLE!!! I really do get so much more use out of my punches now that I know what I have...

SWEET! Great idea. I didn't get it without the pics either, so thanks. Now to modify it for my mini space and small handful of mini punches (oh, and one SU eyelet border punch)

My boyfriend said the trouble with flashing is that it is really sharp. (I'm very accident-prone and should not be trusted around sharp objects!) Has anyone had a problem with sharp edges on the flashing?

I bought towel rods from my local small hardware. They were around $2.00 and come in two lengths. I'm using 17" rods. They are mounted to the side of my workbench.
