Those are nice cases (love the contents!) but I don't have a need for travel cases so I got this for my workspace. So far it is holding 86 pencils with room for a few more!;)
Dini - So lovely! I keep just looking at mine in the case too - I should take a picture but I haven't reorganize them yet. I got that same case because I plan on coloring in the living room while DH watches tv and I will have to take them when I visit my mom too! So now I have yummy leather smell on top of yummy pencil smell and my husban gives me weird looks and asks if I am going to USE them or just admire them .
Klh54 I really like that desktop solution too!

So pretty and I love the fun colors and the look of the whole layout! I follow your blog but just added so many recently I forgot that was you. Oops.

I have [confession time] FOUR of these cases full of pencils (2 for Prismacolors and misc, 1 for Polychromos, 1 for watercolor pencils), and another smaller case (holds 72) that my Graphitint and Inktense pencils will go in when I get home.
Dini, that should be a proclamation not a confession! Since I was using mothers day money and Dick Blick had a sale I bought two. I am trying to decide whether or not to put my (inferior) watercolor pencils in there. Right now they are in a mug and it was a pain when I tries to use them today so they might have the honor of joining my Prismas for now. Lol!
First, how do they fit on your desks? I have all of mine organized in tins ( by colors of course ;)) and they fit fine..so how do these cases fit? Second, for those that travel with your pencils and use OMS..how do you store that for travel? I keep my OMS in a smaller jar ( a used pimento jar from my mil LOL) b/c it is small and takes up little foot print on my desk. And stumps..how do you travel with those?

Making the case user friendly and having it fit on my desk has been a pain sometimes. I usually end up pulling out the colors that I will be using and putting them out on my desk and then putting them back in the case when I am done. I hate having to flip through the case to find the colors I want (organized by color as well ;) )and then put them back under the elastic when I am done. I got the case mostly to keep the pencils from getting damaged.
As far as travelling I will be bringing them on a flight next month. I use baby oil because I get head aches from the OMS. I'm just going to bring the pencils and get some baby oil when I arrive. I'll have my Mom save me a little spice container. I thought I could just put some stumps in the case in any little spot that is available.
I have my two cases stored vertically between a magazine file box that holds paper and my little desk organizer that has scissors and normal pens/pencils/etc. Each one is only an inch or so wide (maybe 2?) so it doesn't take up much space at all.
Mine aren't full so I plan on sticking a small baggie of stumps in the case when I travel. Otherwise, they'll go in the zipper binder I have for other stuff, including ready to color pages! As for OMS, I'm pregnant so I can't use it. I use baby oil, and will bring my little baby food jar with a cotton make up remover circle in it (dry) as well as a travel size bottle of baby oil that will go in my toiletry bag. Or at least, that's the plan!
I don't travel with OMS - I have just been using pencils to blend themselves... in the past I've brought an alcohol blender pen with me (Copic, Touch, etc) which can also be used for pencils as a solvent blender. There's debate as to how that affects the marker nib... but most nibs are replaceable, so I don't worry about it.
I'm digging back for pictures of how I store my pencil cases and how they 'fit' when I'm working with them... this is what my desk typically looks like when I get going... looks like I had 5 or 6 ideas going at once here! LOL... I miss my desk!!
Rather comforting, Dina, to see your "creative mess" Your space embodies what I picture most artists' rooms to look like!! I'm no artist, but I'm pretty messy. Why is it that most of us could spread out a little but end up working on a surface with barely a 10x10 inch clearing?!!! lol

Yeah, why IS that:confused: That's just what my desk looks like right now!
I think mine is a mess too, because I had to finish up a card on a deadline last night, and then my husband was all irritated that I didn't have the address handy (for his cousin). But THAT's another topic altogether. It also meant that of course I didn't get a pic or scan of it, which is a total bummer because I used pencils on it and a new satin ribbon flower technique. BOO.
Dina - what do you have your markers stored in on the left there? I am struggling to find good horizontal marker storage and I don't even have that many!

My husband made me a plywood insert that fits into the shelf to divide the space better. Here's a better picture... It's not really pretty, but it works.
here's a pencil storage question for y'all - everything i seem to think up only works while the pencils are long. so what happens as they get shorter and shorter? do you keep them separate?

Wow Marti are we on the same wave length or what? My shorter pencils were driving me a little coo coo yesterday because they don't fit in the second elastic band in my case! I know it's a little ocd but y'all understand that right:rolleyes:
I keep thinking I would like that pvc pipe idea, BUT not only do I not have the space for it, but the shorter pencils would be hard to get a hold of. I use them until they are so short that they will no longer fit in the pencil sharpener... they are just nubs!!
I don't have that problem just yet, but the case I use only has one elastic band actually, so it would work until they are REALLY short. At that point, I have heard of super gluing them to the end of your new pencil. If you just use a dot it ends up a very thin line and you can sharpen through it when the time comes. Of course, if the singles come sharpened now too that won't work! Or yeah, pencil extenders.
OK, so totally weirdly, I went to Dick Blick to get a picture for an example, and theirs show two bands. I looked at my case and it does say Global and everything, so I snapped a quick (probably sort of blurry - taken with my phone) pic. For a second I was irritated that it didn't come as pictured, but I think I might like mine better! It seems to hold them very secure as long as I have three pencils per loop. What do you guys think?

I read here somewhere that they super glued the small stub onto a new pencil of the same color and just used the pencil as usual, of course you would have a longer pencil to start with, but apparently you just get down to sharpening away the join when you get to it. I have not tried this myself though.

I super glue broken lead back into the pencils all the time, but I never thought of this!
i have heard about the super glue idea too but have not tried it yet. but like you say - if they are already sharpened....i guess you would end up with a stub sharpened on both ends eventually.....i think i still like the pvc idea (have the pvc but hubby has still not cut it...and then maybe have a couple really short ones in the front for the stubby ones....
