Default HTDT? (3.11.09) Paper Pleating

Hi everyone! Welcome to another How'd They Do That tutorial. This week, I'm going to show you a quick, very easy trick - paper pleating!

Step 1: To start, cut a couple of strips of paper approximately 1 1/2" wide. Score first at the 1" mark, then at the 1 1/2" mark, then at 2 1/2", then at 3", alternating between adding 1/2" and 1" until you get to the end of your strip.

Step 2: Add a line of adhesive along one edge of your scored strip.

Step 3: Accordian fold your strip. Starting with the left end, first make a mountain fold, then a valley fold, and so on, tucking each 1/2" section behind the 1" sections to form the pleats.

Step 4: If you need your pleated piece to be longer, do the same thing on a second strip, then tape the two together by adhering two half-inch sections together as shown. (This makes sure the seam ends up tucked behind a pleat where it won't show from the front of the card.)

Step 5: Optional: Lightly sand and/or sponge ink on your pleats to make them stand out a little more.

Step 6: That's it! Your pleated strip is finished and ready for your card. For a more tailored look, adhere some ribbon or trim (or both) along the top edge to cover up the edge, as I did in my sample. For a more shabby look, try machine-stitching your pleat to your card and even distressing the top and bottom edges.

Great tutorial, Amy. I learned this one other time, but you had a couple tips that I think will make it easier (if that's possible)! Thanks so much. And I just love your card. It's adorable!

Thanks for the fabulous tutorial Amy; I was surprised how much paper you need to do the paper pleating.

Had to give it a try.
