OK...this is what I use...never used hairspray?

Gum Arabic Sealing Solution (GASS)

GASS seals things like Whisper White and Very Vanilla craft pads, metallic pads, Versamark with PE, and Poppin' Pastels to keep them from smudging.

Lots of people use hairspray as a sealant and/or PE base; however, while it has polymers that will give you the bond that you're looking for, it also has chemicals that are not acid-free. Because it is *not* acid-free, deterioration will begin in a fairly short period of time, yellowing your creation.

1 Part *LIQUID* Gum Arabic
4 Parts Water
2 Parts Alcohol

Shake *well* before each use.

To make "Pearl Ex Shimmer Spray", add Part Pearl Ex in your choice of color to the GASS in fine-mist spray bottle. I generally add 1/4 part PE (that is: 1/4 of whatever measuring standard I've used to make the GASS...if I've been using tsp, then I add 1/4 tsp; if I've been using Tbsp, then I add 1/4 Tbsp.) You can add more or less, depending upon your specific needs.

Q. Can I use powdered Gum Arabic?
A. Yes - but be sure to mix it directly with the alcohol *first* before adding the water.

will this GASS "set" Encore metallic pad ink? I never could get it to stop smudging on my Christmas cards last year. Even heat setting didn't work.

Another option is to use Perfect Pearls instead of Pearl Ex. Not as many color choices, but PP already has a binder in it (no need for gum arabic). I've seen some instructions on Tim Holtz' blog using mini misters, distress ink reinkers, pp & water.

I made several. In the mini mister I put 1 dropper full of Tim Holtz, 1/4 tsp Perfect Pearls then fill the rest of the way with water. It is fun to use different colors and see what it comes out as.

I then use a tiny punch w/the color it made and glue that to the top of the lid so I know what colors I have.

I found that with any pigment ink that you need to emboss it in order to get the ink to dry.

I thought I had been told that you can use Pearl-Ex with Lumiere somehow to make a glitter mist. I don't remember for sure or how much of each. Maybe someone could help with this.

Default Gum Arabic Sealing Solution (GASS)

Where do you buy Gum Arabic Sealing Solution (GASS)? Can you get it at Michaels or Hobby Lobby? Thanks!

I've never tried the gum arabic, but I've been making mine using Perfect Pearls and water in a mini mister. I got that from Tim Holtz's blog.

I use a little bit of perfect pearls scooped up with a popsicle stick (usually from rub-ons) and I put that into my mini mister and fill the rest with water. That's for a sheer kind of shimmery colour...if you wanted a brighter colour, you could also add a drop of alcohol ink as well!

Hope that helps, have fun making shimmers!

I hope I'm posting this message right. I've used perfect pearls, dye ink, and water (most of it being water) in a mister bottle. It creates beautiful background paper. Try it. Jan

I do not live close to any kind of craft store. I LOVE these ideas. Anything to expand my options without a trip to the city.
