How do you store all your scraps? I hate to throw away pieces of paper that might work on a card or scrapbook page. This morning I organized lots of my paper supply and sorted my scraps by size and solids/patterns, but I'm not quite sure the best way to store my scraps so I can easily get to them. What creative ideas do you have?
I have the 12X12 hanging files and I put them in the file drawer under the base color. Then all I have to do is whip out the file folder when I need a match.
This works when I do the filing. Usually they are on the floor in big heaping mounds!
I have three portable file folder boxes. One holds patterned paper scraps, another solid colored cardstock scraps, and the other neutral cardstock, vellum, chipboard and transparency scraps.
I hardly ever have to use a full sheet of cardstock except for the base -- unless I use white. I use a lot of white.
I save any scrap over 2" by 2". I bought a thing at joanns a while back from cropper hopper that is mean to store/sort 12x12 paper. It would make more sense if I had a picture. It is plastic like a magazine holder but has smaller plastic holders in it and file separators. I divide each color but no longer keep solids and patterns separate. It took up too much space.
Before I found this storage item I had my paper by color in 2 gallon baggies stood up in a box that was about 13" wide.
A friend of mine keeps hers in a standard file cabnet but the pieces always fall out the sides of the files. She tried taping the sides but it was difficult to find what she wanted. She is now switching to the baggies.

This is what I do. I try to file them when a project is done. However, for patterned paper and tiny scraps, I have a disposable metal lasagna pan. I just throw them in there. If I'm using a small punch, I go to the lasagna pan.
I sort my patterned scraps by company or paper pack and store them in a 12X12 post bound album. That way I can just flip through the album as needed. For cardstock, I am going to start doing the same, but with a 6X6 book.
I have a couple of vertical paper keepers, that I sort print from solid and SU from others. I will only keep paper larger than 3" x 3". Anything less I punch something out of it and put it into the box of goodies for the pre-school that is near by.

I use the paper keepers that SU sells (cropper hopper). Each color family has it's own divider, and immediately behind that divider (before the cs) I have a top loading sheet protector with the color name on it. All of the scraps for that color go in there. Whenever I need a scrap of a specific color I am able to immediately see if I have the size I need before I cut an entire piece of cs for a small project. Works great for me, and it makes cleaning up scraps after a project such a breeze!
I have my whole sheets in a file cabinet (Target cube deal) then I have a 4 drawer cube that hold all my "scraps" anything less than a whole sheet goes in there. Each drawer hold 2 families, SS & RR together, BB & EE together, Neutrals and In Colors together, then the last drawer has ribbon in CD cases. I have divided the drawers down the center with some cardboard. Then I have a 4 x 6 photo holder for each family. Anything smaller than a 1/4 sheet of CS goes in there. I always check my scraps before cutting into a new sheet.
I currently use a bin that's a part of a 3 tier cubby. I'm not that organized and so I don't sort them by color. I just sift through all of them until I see a color I need. But I got some ideas from this thread, so I might try and find something at Michael's in a few weeks when I can get out.

No matter how you organize them - make sure they are easier to access than full sheets of paper. You'll use more of them up that way.
I read in another thread somewhere to shred them every now again and save that as filling for gift baskets and boxes. This is on my to-do list for January.
I'm pretty diligent about using them up, but I feel like my scraps are getting a little bit "stale".
I put my in gallon size zip lock bags by color and store them in a box. I have found that it works great cause your can see the colors, and it cheap.
I just tried this process not too long ago and it's working out GREAT! I sorted by cardstock colors into bags. The printed scraps I have in a box because I don't have as much of those. I haven't cut into a new piece of paper for awhile now. It's easy to grab & find the shade I want. I'm also seeing a noticeable difference in my rubbermaid scrap box...it's where I put all the gallon bags of scraps...it's getting more and more room! I really like this process!

I have my SU paper stored in a two drawer 29 inch high metal file cabinet handed down to me from hubby's office. My file cabinet has a great area of space on top that is 3 feet by 19 in to use for storage of my laminator, microscope (homeschooler) and a computer.
Initially, I used the hanging file folders that were in it but when I put scraps in, they slid out the side. So, I just bought the file folders with the pockets that go half way up each side and nothing slides out. So easy to store the scraps with the full sheets they came from. I also bought off of ebay the labels for the SU colors at a cheap price and saved myself a lot of time making them myself.
I think this is a fantastic way to store paper.. in a hanging file cabinet.
