Default TLC195 Triangle Fold Medallion {11/17/08}

Hello Technique lovers. I have another medallion type challenge for you today. I saw this medallion in the current issue of Paper Creations magazine and I hope that you enjoy making these medallions as much as I do.

Since I couldn't show you the instructions from the magazine, I've created a picture montage to go along with the written instructions that I've included here.

SUPPLIES:
Cardstock
Patterned paper: 8 - 2" squares
Paper cutter or craft knife
Bone Folder
Adhesive

Please refer to my picture with the numbers corresponding with the instructions. (see attachment) I recommend completing all of the folds prior to assembling your medallion. Creasing (or burnishing) each fold with your bone folder as you go will make the process easier.
  • Step One: Cut all of your squares and follow the steps below for each of your 8 squares for the folds.
  • Step Two: Fold in half - burnish this fold with bone folder
  • Step Three: Fold in half again - burnish this fold
  • Step Four: Open (so that it is as in Step 2) and fold down corners, meeting at your center fold line, creating a triangle. The open edges are all facing downward. Now that you have all 8 of your 2" squares folding in this manner, you're ready to assemble.
  • Step Five: With the open edges of your folded triangle facing up, adhere one side of one triangle with another, so that it looks like this. The open edges of all of your triangles will face out from the center once you get to Step Six and onward.
  • Step Six: I've turned this image upside down so that you can see where to apply your adhesive for the application of your third triangle (see the gray arrow)
  • Step Seven: Adhere your next triangle as shown.
  • Step Eight: Flip what you have done so far and look at the front side...this picture illustrates how your medallion should look from the front so far.
  • Step Nine: Flip your medallion back over onto the backside, and continue adhering the remainder of your triangles in the same manner until you get to the last one.
  • Step Ten: Adhere your last triangle as you have the others, but flip the side of the FIRST triangle up and layer the edge of your LAST triangle under the side of your FIRST. (see in this picture how my thumb is holding up the FIRST triangle flap up so that I can lay the LAST triangle flap under the FIRST.)
I know that these directions may sound intimidating, but once you get started, you'll see how very easy it is. (Trust me!) Reading directions and visualizing in your mind (for me at least) is much harder than actually doing it. (and writing out the directions is 10 times harder than actually doing this medallion - grin). I did practice once with typing paper before I moved onto my patterned paper so that I could make sure I was adhering my pieces together correctly. Not that you need to, but it may help you get the hang of it.

I hope that you will give it a try, because once you complete one, I'm sure you'll want to keep on making these. Wouldn't they be wonderful embellishments to a gift wrapped package on top of a pretty bow?

I'm sure I have challenged you this morning...are you up to the challenge? I sure hope so.

Don't forget to use KEYWORD TLC195 (no spaces) when you upload.

HINT FOR NEXT WEEK: 'Tis the season to give Gift Cards. How will YOU present these in creative way?

Teabag Folded Thanks is my card for today's challenge. Bit grey and murky here, so hard to get the sparkle showing.
Thanks for the fun, Lynn. Once the cleaning is done I might try another, pretty sure I have some pre-printed teabag squares somewhere.

How fun. I have a question... is it just me, or is picture #5 wrong? For the life of me, that one doesn't seem to fit and I'm ok if I ignore that one and just follow the rest. Thanks, Lynn, for another great challenge.

Interesting Lynn. I've never done anything like this and will give it a try. I have to admit though, I'm already confused just reading the directions and looking at the pictures . . . maybe after more coffee!

Just take it one step at a time. I'm sure that once you do that, you won't be confused.

Thank you so much Lynn. I used 1.5 in squares. Lots of tiny folds but I just loved it. Your picture tutorial really helped alot. I don't think I could have figured it out otherwise.

This was a great Techinque challenge... I couldn't help but notice how much my Medallion looked like a Poinsettia blossom when I finished it. I really liked my card but I think it needs something.... What do you all think? Maybe Bigger ribbon and Bow? Maybe Some Pearl-ex shine? Idk!

Also I thought this was called the Tea Bag Fold Technique.....? hummmm.....maybe not?

Here's my card...

When adhering them together make sure that you have the folded side facing you. When I was doing this for the first time, it helped me to look at the finished medallion so that I could see how it was supposed to look. Other than that, without seeing what you are seeing, I'm not much help.

Just to avoid any confusion. Many techniques are called a variety of different things. If I have mistakenly called it something else, it's my bad...and I apologize. I had to call it something, and didn't know about Tea Bag Folding.

DEEP BREATHS.....maybe it's the hour (it's only 6:15 here) but I'm with Sherry and lost just reading the directions. I think that I will get the kiddos off to school and try this with scraps first!! HEHEEHHE. Thanks Lynn for finding all these different techniques for us to try!

LOL! Well, I feel better coming back and rereading this thread, knowing I'm not alone of not getting it! I can do the fold, but when it comes to attaching them part...well, lets just say its not coming our right...I got a cool looking garland thingy going on though, rofl.

lol...that could be a whole other technique. Remember that you have to turn your medallion as your adhere each section to the previous piece.

I"m lost......When you flip the image over in Picture 6, it looks like there is the open fold on the back side? Is that correct?

Yes...as you are adhering, the open folds are facing you. When you are all finished, you flip it over and that will be your "right" side. (did that make sense?)

ok, another quick question (just can't let this thing go) is pic 6 just the flipped pic of 5? or is it with the third triange attached?
