Crease pad sandwich and magnetic placement pad ?
On the BigShot sandwich stack download here there is a column for "Spellbinders dies with "Magnetic placement pad"
Where do they sell the "magnetic placement pad ? Are they sold by Spellbinders or Sizzix?
Second question is on the Download sheet for using the "Premium Crease Pad" the illustrations on the bottom shows a stack picture with " Originals or Bigz die shim" Is this what they mean by "clear shim" in the sentence on the bottom ? Where are these sold?
Aha -I'm new to all of this :(
Thanks
Barbara

The Magnetic Placement Pad is sold by Spellbinders. If they don't have them at the website you could try a google search.
Another option would be to take Cardstock cut to the size of your Multipurpose Platform and run it through a Xyron with a magnetic cartridge and use that instead.
The Premium Crease pad comes with 2 Acrylic "shim" sheets. These are what are used in the sandwich pictured in the file.

Alicia - Xyron has a magnetic cartridge for the machines? Really?
Uh oh. Now I think I just might need a Xyron and I never needed one before - but that. Yeah. I just might have to get a Xyron.
Thanks for enabling me

When I read your question I immediately thought of Balsa wood. I found some at hobby lobby where they sell pieces of wood in various lengths. I bought a 4 x 36 inch piece of balsa wood which is about 1/16 of an inch. It works perfectly in the Big Shot. It stains and paints well. I used the SU Big Notz die and it looks great. Trying to find my Sizzix die cut fence - should be perfect for a garden theme. A little late but I hope this helps.

Wow so it is thin enough you can cut stuff out with it - and stain it or paint it? How awesome is that! About how much does a piece of balsa wood run? The nesties wont cut it though, will they? Just the steel rule dies?
I never even thought of using my Big Kick to cut wood until it was mentioned here. That along with the Top Note could make some beautiful plaques.

Yes
Here's your sandwich
Multipurpose Platform Tab 2
Cutting Pad
Die blade side up
Cardstock
Cutting Pad
Roll through big Shot
See the very first post in this thread. Sandwich list is on the bottom of the post.
Also clearly marked on your multipurpose platform.
Tab 2 is for wafer thin dies like Quickutz, Spellbinders and Cuttlekids etc.

The balsa wood is really cool. My biggest problem was trying to find a place to store my very flexible 4" x 36" piece until I use it. LOL! I did try to use a stylus and try to etch my initials in it. Thought it would be cute for Valentine's day to cut it out in a tree shape and carve a heart with our initials in it. It's a bit too soft for that. I haven't tried stamping on it yet. Was in a time crunch so later today I'm going to try it. I'm thinking if you don't have the right ink it may bleed. Going to do some testing today and I'll let you know the results. It cost me $2.77 for this piece. (if you use a 40% off coupon its even better). I'm thinking I'll have to go get another piece so I can test on this one. I just may try it on a nestie . Remember there are different thicknesses of balsa wood. Mine was quite flexible. I once read that you can use anything that is not thicker than a nickel in your big dies and this is the exact width of a nickel. So take a nickel with you when you go out to buy it. I'll let you know my test results.

Well I've done my testing with balsa wood in the Big Shot and these are my results.
1. Inks: SU, Memento, Versafine all work beautifully
2. Tools: Aside from the Big Shot a craft knife works best for individual images. A scissors does not work well especially on curves, whereas the craft knife is a bit more manageable on curves. Still not the cleanest way to cut balsa wood.
3. Embossing: Embossing ink does not work as it soaks into the wood. Pigment ink is perfect.
4. I cut the Spellbinders Ribbon Tags and the Ovals nestie and they came out perfect. Event tried Flower Creations 3 (1 1/2" size) and it was perfect. I used the regular cutting sandwich and because of its thickness it embossed automatically (which I liked).
5. Copics did not work well - it bled out. But for overall coverage it was fine.
6. The Gelly Roll and Spica pens, with a light touch so as not to cut into the wood, was perfect.
7. Last tip. My piece was 4" x 36". I didn't want to waste it so I started cutting at one end but I didn't roll the whole thing through. I reversed it once it got past my nestie. The excess has a tendancy to buckle or cup a bit so its currently stored under a large Giga punch. LOL!
Hope this is helpful. Had a great time doing my research. Have fun!

this is a topic that really bugs me. i love the CB embossing in my big shot so much. i can't even bring myself to do the sizzix texturz plates even though i own both sets from SU. i've tried many tricks but they are still not close to what i get with the CB folders. i'm open to any other ideas...i really do want to use and love the sizzix plates just as much.

Just want to share my opinion on this whole CB Folder VS Sizzix
Texture Plates.
First these two items are not the same thing. It's like comparing
apples and oranges!
Remember back BEFORE folders there were metal stencils and light
tables. The embossing that you got was the similar subtle look that
you achieve from the texture plates. (which by the way have been
around long before the folders also)
The ONLY reason that the folders give a deeper emboss is because the
pressure is exerted on BOTH sides of the paper. You are putting the
paper into a folder and the Pressure from the Machine is causing the
deep emboss through the positive and negative sides of the folder.
SU will be carrying their version of the Sizzix Texture Impressions
Folders in March (THESE will be able to compete with the Cuttlebug
Folders)
These Folders will be better in that:
* They are made of thicker plastic (thus more durable)
* They will emboss the FULL A2 size
* They function Just Like Cuttlebug Folders so you will get a VERY
DEEP emboss
www.sizzix.com and look under Textured Impressions to see what I'm
talking about.
The texture plates are only meant to be subtle. Their design doesn't
allow for anything more. Think of the Texture CS. You can feel the
texture but it's subtle.
Here are some things you can do to get a more defined emboss with your
plates:
* Paper Glide (this was designed to be used on papers to make them
more malleable when embossing or texturizing)
* Fine Misting with Rubbing Alcohol (I know there are safety issues
with inhalation so just mention that in advance) This dries quickly
* Fine Misting with Water (the paper will bend and takes longer to dry)
* Rubbing the Cardstock with Wax Paper
* Shimming the sandwich with Cardstock beneath the Texture Plate
Just my .02 cents
Hugs and Blessings

Wendy thank you so much for sharing your research with us. I'm excited that I can cut the wood with the Nesties. I also have the Sizzix Originals Gingerbread man - and I think it'd be fun to cut a bunch with the balsa wood, then let the kiddos paint and decorate them.
Thanks again, I appreciate it.

Sizzix die cut finished dimensions sold by SU
Hi Alicia,
Here's a list with finished dimensions for Sizzix dies sold by SU I got from SU's demo support. Probably from Sizzix though I couldn't find it on their site.
Thought you might want to add it to your sticky up top.
Thanks for all your work on this. - Jean

Back in 2004, SU! carried a Party Favor Die Cut Box. These were small boxes that were just big enough for a nice piece of chocolate or a trinket. One had a star top and one had a flower petal type top. Does anyone know if there is a die out there for the Sizzix or Big Shot machine that will create this kind of party favor. I have a local chocolatier looking to see if I can create some of these for her business? I certainly wouldn't want to try cutting these by hand!!!!!

I apologize if this question has already been asked, but...
can you use the Quickutz 4x8 alphabet die in the SU! Big Shot? Will it fit?
And if so, what is the sandwich, and do I need any special "layers" that would not normally come with the Big Shot Starter Kit?
Thanks!!!

Hi Kathy,
Here's a couple of possibilities:
http://www.sizzix.com/product/759 - small size gable box
http://search.ellison.com/search?w=die+cut+boxes
- This is a list of boxes with a couple that are pretty much what you describe. I'm not 100% sure they will work with a Big SHot but I think it is likely since Ellison is or was a Sizzix partner. If you email them you should be able to find out for sure.
Also if you Google die cut boxes it is possible to purchase similar already die cut boxes in quantity. The one thing you might want to investigate is whether the boxes have to be food quality if they are going to be used to store or sell food items. County Health Dept. should be able to fill you in on this one if your chocolatier isn't sure.
I'll keep my eye out for any others I come across. The only other box like you describe I'm aware of is cut using a Cricut cartridge and machine. You might also pass that suggestion along to SU as those earlier boxes were quite popular. Perhaps they might consider making an SU exclusive die available. You might also consider the new Box #2 or the Scallop Bag die though they might be bigger than you want. Box #2 looks really cute with one of the die cut butterfly pieces on top.
Hope this gives you some place to start. - Jean

Double check this because I am not 100% but I think if you use some kind of wrapping for the chocolates, it can go in a non-food grade box, so that may be an option. But again I am not certain so please check it out, I'd hate to be the one to get some company in trouble!

Jean, Thanks so much for this information. I will be sure to check with the owner of the chocolate store about the health regulations. I think she may already know the answer to this since she has purchased other handmade boxes. I know she will usually line those with tissue or use a plastic bag inside. But it's an excellent question.

If I remember correctly the "official" amount is 5 sheets but I cut only 4 at a time. When I cut 5 the bottom layer has a tendency to get stuck in the die.

It depends on what kind of die you are using
Steel Rule Dies like the Originals, Bigz and Bigz XL can cut 3-4 pieces of Cardstock and 4 pieces of DSP.
Sizzlits, Sizzlit Decorative Strips, Embosslits, Texturz Plates can only cut one sheet of cardstock, vellum, foil, DSP
Dies that have a crease rule like Scallop Envelope, Pillow Box or bag with scallops should only be used to cut one sheet at a time as well. These dies are used with the premium Crease pad

I just bought a BigShot last night through SU. Is there a place on here with galleries of how to use the different cutouts? (like there is with the SU stamps)
Thanks!!! :-)

If you go to the gallery and type in "Big Shot" in the search that will give you a list of projects.
If you want to narrow it down even further just type in the name of the die
i.e. "top note"

Ican cut several cuts at a time with some of the die cuts but a thicker piece of cardstock needs to be one sheet at a time

I have a new question. Are there directions on here somewhere for the butterfly die put out by Stampin up? I need to get the crease at the right place to cut the one that is on the fold.

I'd like the answer to that question too. I just received my butterfly die and was wondering the same thing.
