Question magnetic cutting mats - reviews?

I keep looking at the magnetic cutting mats and wondering if they are worth it. I sometimes have issues keeping my ruler straight when using a craft blade to cut, thought this might help. Or is it just a waist? If you have one or have used one please give me your thoughts.

Thank you in advance!

I have had my magnetic cutting mat since Feb. I got it as a birthday present and I absolutely love it. The magnetic ruler and "pins" keep your paper without any movement. I am really bad about measuring and this has grid lines on the sides ever 1/8". All you do is line up your ruler on each size and cut. I use it most frequently to trim just a little off a layer if I measured badly which happens because I hate to measure and try to eyeball things. I say go for it. I have never regretted getting it.

OK, dumb me. If that is the one that holds the 12 X 12 paper, I have it. Got it last Christmas and thought it would be great. I put a pretty piece of Bling paper on it and there it still sits, 7 months later! For some reason, I thought I had read that it wasn't to be cut on and was only for holding your page together while doing a layout. If I can use it as a cutting mat, I will be getting it out and using it starting tonight when the kids go to bed. If I am wrong-someone, PLEASE stop me before I cut! Thanx

All of the ones that I've been looking at are self healing cutting mats - so yup you are to cut on them. No idea if that is what you have because the ones I've seen are slightly larger than 12x12. HTH

Default cutting mats

I am looking at the magnetic cutting mats as well and wondering if I should go with that or the glass cutting mat. I have a self healing mat now that has rolled up on all 4 edges. Has anyone else had that problem? I don't want to get another one if they all do that. Thanks.

I have had a MM 12 x 12 mat with magnets for over a year, and use it every day. I find that it works better than any cutter for getting straight cuts, but that's an indivifual thing, I guess. My edges have not rolled, but remember to use a heat gun very far away from it! I think even if you have a hot light bulb right over it, it could roll your edges. I have only 'cool' natural light bulbs, so the one directly over it throws very little heat. I find I no longer use the magnets, just the magnetic ruler and my hands!

Obviously, an xacto knife can be more dangerous than a cutter, so you have to be careful and put the knife away from any little fingers!

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll work on some alternatives.

The green self-healing mats will curl if you leave them too long in the sun or near a heat source or store them standing up. I have 6 of these mats in different sizes for quilting (over 20 years), and only one has curled. When you store it, lay it flat (under the bed works great).

Thanks. My mat is a clear one, but I will be more careful how I store it from now on!

I did a video review of the We R Memory Keepers magnetic mat:

I found the ruler to be really strong and held the paper in place. I was able to cut 1/8" pieces with it.
