This is my first post. I have a simple question...while I am an expert crafter, stamping is new. When I stamp and get ready to color, they smudge. I need immediate tips for sanity.
First, use an ink like Stazon. Also, make sure you give it time to dry. You can use your heat gun to speed up the drying. You can also emboss the image. This will positively not smudge. Again - make sure you completely melt the powder (just don't overheat it).
I have never had a problem with overheating my embossing powder until recently. It just seems like everything was going downhill last night. Oh, I am using the versamark inks...
I agree, it's probably the type of ink you are using. There are lots of permanent inks that will not smear but it also depends on the type of coloring medium you are using.
If you are watercoloring, using reinkers, using colored pencils or watercolor pencils or any water based markers, then SU's basic black or StaZon black will be fine.
If you are using Copic or other alcohol-based markers you'll need an ink like the Pallette Noire.
If you are currently using a "pigment" ink you will need to use a clear embossing powder, heated with a heat gun, to keep it from smearing OR use the versa mark pad and black embossing powder for a glossy and permanent finish.
Sorry... SU's basic black is NOT waterproof. It runs like carzy. I use Memories black dye ink if I an going to color the image. Watercolor or Gamsol. both work fine with Memories.
I use Versafine Onyx black to stamp almost everything. You can use watercolors, Prisma pencils, paints etc. and you will not get smearing. It dries instantly without a waiting for it to dry time.

I second the motion ~ that one ink does not fit all! It does depend on what medium you are using & what papers you are using. Best advice would be to do a search on what ever you are using (Copics, chaulks, watercolors, etc) and see what the consensus is.
I will never tell my DH how many black ink pads I have - he will never understand. That being said, I use Versafine Onyx Black and Staz On the most. :-)

its like "how many black shoes does a woman need?"
i have loads of different blacks too,
but I tend to reach for my memories ink or stazon
I wanted to try my Prisma pencils and gamsol for the first time today, so I heat embossed my image with SU's black EP. When I tried to blend my colored image with the stump and gamsol, it majorly smudged! Suggestions? Can you just not emboss and use gamsol? Do you have to use Staz On or like product only? TIA
Cool - I'm off to add Versafine Onyx to my shopping list now. Perfect use for my 50% coupon this week. I use OMS for my blending and haven't had any problems using it with my pigment ink but I don't want to take any chances. What's one more black ink?
