Default Mason Jars

My sister recently gave me a case of mason jars and said "here...do something with these or I'm throwing them out". I could not let that happen!! So now, I need some ideas of different things to do with these jars!! Any help would greatly be appreciated!!

I enjoy making the layered "mixes:, ie brownies in a jar, etc. You can go online and google mixes in a jar and should be able to find websites to give you recipes. Then you can decorate the jar and the receipe card and they make great gifts.

I second the mixes in a jar. My personal favorites are the cookies in a jar but they also have soup.

What size are the jars? I believe the quart size are good for the s'mores in a jar.

Wow! How darling! Thanks so much for posting her link! I do a lot of canning in the summer and fall and have wanted to find something cute to send with my canned veggies to family and friends when I share. This would be great!

Thanks

I did the cookies in a jar for the holidays and it was a big hit. I have a few left over and plan on buying some wood clothespins, wrapping my ribbon on them and storing them in the jars.

I've made lanterns for my yard out of them. Decorate the outside with copper wire and beads and then place a votive cup in them.

I have put a small strand of christmas lights (battery operated) in them, added popouri, covered the top with a piece of netting, screwed on the rim (without the lid) and covered with decorative material or a doily tied with some ribbon. The lights heat up the popouri enough to dispense the scent and gave a nice "glow".

I heartily endorse the "mix in a jar" idea. I put a "double chocolate brownie" mix recipe in jars for Christmas, added some home made coffee fudge, a pound of Starbucks coffee beans, and a Starbucks gift card, all in a basket for DH's siblings, with a stamped card, of course.

There are even bean soup recipes if you don't want to go for the sweets--I like to add a cornbread mix on the side when I do that.

If you do the mixes, be sure and get funnels if you don't have them on hand--they make all the difference.

You can tailor-make the recipe cards between your computer and stamps to look just adorable.

Someone back at christmas filled them with the nuggets and decorated the jar. They were so cute! I know people will do something with peeps in them for easter. I would do a search of the gallery and see what you can find.

If you don't decide to do one of these really cute ideas, please don't throw the jars away! I actually can a lot (jam, peaches, apricots, pears, etc.) and all my friends know to give me their used jars for recycling. They aren't cheap! At least give them to Goodwill or the Salvation Army. Good luck, I love all these ideas!

You can also bake loaves of bread in jars. Some recipes I've read say the bread keeps for up to 6 mos, others for a week (may have something to do with the difference between something like regular bread and a sweeter one like banana bread).

Woo-hoo! Thanks so much for posting this link. I've been looking for this and didn't know where to start. I had heard about someone baking bread in jar, but though maybe they were talking about the dry mixes.

Another idea is to use the new SU rub-ons to decorate the jars and then give them away empty as gifts so that the recipient can decide how to use them - cotton balls, soaps etc - they will be pretty enough to leave empty and use as an ornament! Try searching on SCS for examples - also see the new SU catalog.

I also store ribbon pieces in jars. But just yesterday I made an RAK jar. I need to send out more RAK's and I thought this might be a good reminder! I just cut strips of paper with names on them to draw from. And I am in the process of making a topper / decorating it.

I keep ribbon, twinkling h2o's, and chipboard bits in the larger ones and large embellishments in the smaller ones (bottle caps, mini clothes pins, etc). Haven't used any for gifts yet, but I love the ideas shared here! Thanks!

I've made chocolate cakes in the jars too. Since they have unsweetened applesauce I even think of them as a "healthy" treat (definitely a stretch but ...) and it's so easy my Girl Scout troop made them when they were Daisies.

I use them for ribbons also, but what a great bunch of ideas. I'm definitely going to incorporate some of them into Christmas (or otherwise) presents this year.

Martha Stewart had an idea for a sewing kit in a jar:

http://www.marthastewart.com/good-th...g-kit-in-a-jar

I have these in my guest rooms. They are less cumbersome than your "whole sewing kit" and more convenient than little crappy mending kits.

Also a great gift for a bridal shower, college student or first apartment/ new home owner.

I made this card into a tag and tied it around the lid edge with the 5/8 red grograin ribbon. I stamped white snowflakes on Brocade and made a circle to fit for the top and filled it with red cellophane and chocolate peanut butter balls. Everyone loved them.
I cased the card from summerthyme64. This is probably my favorite card ever!
