Default Question about Stamping on Fabric

I have been surfing different blogs and keep seeing where people are stamping on onezies for babies and just wanted to know what kind of ink they are using to stamp on the material. Thanks, Regina

I haven't done it myself but I think people use SU Craft ink and heat set it or they use acrylic paint. You can probably search some threads about stamping on fabric.

You can use pigment ink, which is what SU calls our craft ink. You would need to heat set.

Fabric paint. Probably my preferred method...when you follow all the steps, it is VERY sturdy and long lasting with no heavy, stiff feeling.

Regular acrylic paint will work, although it works better if you mix fabric medium with it. The directions for it would be on the bottle.

Whichever method, the garment must be pre-washed and dried, using whatever method would be employed in the normal use of it. This removes sizing which would tend to block the colors from absorbing into the fibers. NO fabric softener, either! Just like sizing, it adds a layer that would prevent paint from absorbing.

To heat set stamp ink, just press on the wrong side of the fabric when dry. You might want to use a press cloth and also press the front. With the paint, follow the mfr. directions for heat setting.

It's very fun, and your project will definitely outlast the baby's ability to fit into it! I have t-shirts painted 10 years ago that still look great.

Thank you for your responses. So far I have just bought SU classic ink, maybe I should think about buying the craft ink though. I'm glad I can ask questions here and not worry about feeling bad. My SU demo makes me feel stupid if I ask questions. Thanks!

Betsy gave you a great answer. Remember the Classic ink would wash out so don't use that (not that you sounded like you would). Your demo shouldn't make you feel bad about asking questions (no one should!), but for sure you have a great place to come here to ask anything! More information here than you can ever use!! Good luck with your project! There's also a method of stamping on transfer paper and then ironing that on...haven't done that either but I've seen it and it's very cute!
