Default TLC114 Mulberry Batik

TLC114 - Mulberry Batik

Hi everyone. Beth asked me to fill in as hostess this week, because she was out of town for the weekend. This week we are going to do mulberry batik. I hope y’all have mulberry paper, because this is a fun technique. There is a great tutorial here.

Please note, on my sample, I did not use watercolor crayons as shown in the tutorial. I used ink refills to add color and then smooshed them around with a sponge brush. I actually made my mulberry paper quite wet. Just be sure to handle it gently.

Please upload your cards to the special gallery set aside for mulberry batik. Be sure to include TLC114 in the keywords. I look forward to seeing all your creations. Have fun playing.

My sample: happy butterfly

**Another note: For those of you who don't have mulberry paper, Chaper suggested a coffee filter. Excellent substitute. I'm in the midst of making a card with that. I will upload as soon as I'm finished. (Edited to add sample) OK, here it is: joy

This looks lovely. I wish I could play tomorrow, but we are moving our home (on wheels) from the hot southwest to cooler areas on Colorado so I will have to do some catching up at the end of the week.

What can we use if we don't have water color crayons or reinkers? Would color wash work?

I tried dryer sheets and you really can't get enough embossing powder to stick to it. I also tried tissue paper. You can do batik on tissue paper, but you can't iron it. (It's too flimsy to peel off the scrap paper.) So you can't get rid of the glossy embossing. Although maybe it would be less glossy if you turn it over to the back.

Someone suggested a swiffer sheet. That might work.

If you don't have refills or watercolor crayons, you can sponge the color on, or use markers and then spread it with water.

I just got some watercolor crayons -- yippee! I'll definitely try this when I get home from work. I don't think I want to attempt it 'in a hurry' before work! Thanks, Melody, for stepping in for Beth.

I think if you dampen a sponge or sponge brush then pick up ink from your ink pad it will work nicely! Your colors just may be a bit more subtle than if you use reinkers.

Cool technique! I don't have any mulberry paper or embossing stuff, so I'll just be a stalker looking at everyone's work!

Who thinks these techniques up??? "I think I'll try ironing some embossing powder on some mulberry paper today!" I'm just not that clever. I may have to give this a try (hope I can squeeze it in later!).

Thanks for sharing this!
