I've heard a few people mention they don't keep their background stamps in the clear cases they come in. I'm guessing they mean they don't keep them in anything. Just wondering how most people store theirs?
So far, I've kept mine in the cases, but it's a thought to take them out and use the cases for other things...
Other...I don't own any background stamps! Am I weird?
Buy one, just one, and you will want ALL of them. They are easy, fun, and incredibly versatile. I've only been doing this since July and I have almost every one of the current BG stamps, and I've swapped for two retired ones.
I keep them in the original boxes and I stack them all together in my cabinet.

And to quote Musikel -- buy just ONE and you will not turn back. They are fantastic -- I'm addicted!
Oh, and to answer the poll - I keep them in their cases just because it's easiest for my storage situation. But, I can totally see why people might not do that and just leave them out.
Out of the boxes Baybee! I have them standing up on end (like books) on a shelf within reach of my table. I NEED to be able to get them everytime I stamp. I did have them in the boxes and stacked up, but it took so long to get them out of the box, find a place to put the box etc... that I switched. I love being able to get to them easily.
Oh yes, if you don't own a bkg stamp, buy one! You'll never turn back! For the longest time I couldn't justify the price. $16.95 seemed an awful lot to pay for one stamp, but now I'll gladly pay that! I get more use out of my bkg stamps than any other set I own!
I take all mine out of the cases- kind of silly to keep ONE stamp in a case - I keep them in the top drawer of one of my IRIS carts. I can fit about 12 or something in one drawer instead of just 4 or 6. :-)
I only have three BG stamps so I just keep them in their cases on my shelf with the stamp name label out so I can just reach up and get the one I need.
I don't use them for every card so that solution works best for me as I don't have a lot of space to leave them in the open. Plus it's best that I put them away after use so the cats don't get into the stamps. They like to lay on the stamp table if I am not in there stamping so I usually make sure the inks, and stamps are put away.
I do realize that I need more cause I just love the cards I see with the BG stamps I don't have yet.
I take mine out of the case they come in and put them in the next smallest size - they *just* fit in those and take up less room - that way I have them labelled like the rest of my sets and know which one I'm grabbing.
Mine are in the cases but they are stacked to the left of me so I can reach them at all times ;)
Would take them out but when we move I would be afraid they would not be well enough protected...considering I had some envelopes in one of the cases and the mover felt so inclined to take the envelopes out and pack them seperately and the case was in a circle when I pulled it out of the box....who knows what would happen to a individual stamp out of a case ;)

I have 5 background stamps. I don't use the plastic cases. Canvas is always somewhere on my worktable. The others are standing on end in a plastic storage bin in my stamping closet (where I keep all my stamp sets).
I keep them out of the case so I don't have to open a case 3 or 4 times per card ;) cause you gotta use like 50 or 60 background stamps per card, right?

LOL! That seems to be the trend now!!!!

I fear getting ink all over stuff if I keep them out of the box. I do clean them between use, but I always wonder what if I missed a spot? but I can see why people would want them out of the case. I keep thinking that would be nice, but... you know, what if?? so anyway I keep mine in their origonal box.
Is there an advantage to storing them out of the case? Other than you can use the case for something else
The cases are bigger than the stamp. Not enormously bigger, but enough that you end up with wasted space in a drawer or container storage system.
I take them out of the case and put the case label sticker directly on the side of the wood block. Then I get six in a drawer instead of four. I do keep the cases for protection when they travel. ;)

I also keep mine this way. I do use a BG on almost every card (okay, probably every one), but I find that I am more prone to put them away if they are in their case. Plus, it keeps them protected since they are stacked one on top of another. I'd hate to get staz-on residue on the top of another stamp if I stacked them "naked". Plus, I can find them easier with the label on the case while they are stacked.

Since I have space where they are stored right now they are left in the case, standing like books with the hindge side to the shelf surface. The names are on the end of the case so it's very quick to find as they are stored in alphabetical order.
My only problem is that I have 11 SU 3 Non SU and I need more, lots more! I have more coming any day now from Eureka's unmounted half off sale. DH will cut wood and I ordered more cases for them. I don't like dust to distort the image.
Emily, I read about a year ago that stamps of any size aren't supposed to be stored more than three high because the rubber can be damaged. You may be moving them around enough that it wouldn't matter but I thought you might like to know.

huh....oops! Been doing it for several months now....no problems with any of my stamps!
I also store my BG stamps w/o the cases. I store them nearby stacked on top of each other - been doing it for years with no problem. I do use them all pretty frequently, so maybe that's the key to no damage!
I take the leftover boxes and store lots of my non-SU stamps in them. I have them seperated by Valentine, Christmas (2), random words (2), religious (2) and calendar chicks, etc. Helps me keep everything organized.
I have an iris-type cart under my stamp table directly to the right of my chair. The bottom drawer is the perfect depth to store them standing up (no cases). I put the label directly on the wood (upside down) so I can keep that drawer open while stamping and easily access all my BG stamps. I rarely make a card without at least one. The advantage to me in having them out of the cases is that they take up less space and are easily accessible and easy to put away.
Actually, I have both. I needed a case to store my ink spots so took the BG out but others I have in case. If push came to shove, I'd probably just store them outside their boxes.
i like jami am a BG addict - i have about 15 BG stamps - no naked cardstock here - and i know i will be getting more ( like the linen BG thats going to be in the spring mini) - i take mine out of the boxes and with my trusty p-touch label maker i labelled each stamp on the short side. just this week i found a sterlite storage unit - 3 drawers - it is 8"w X 24"H X13"D - i can get 14 stamps in each drawer - that means i can now get up to 42 BG stamps without having to worry where i'm gonna put them --- YES! the storage unit was about $10 - less than the price of the BG stamp! can ya tell i'm happy about this storage purchase!

mine are not in their cases either....I use them too much, they are always on my table! But when they go on the shelf, I will try to remember to put them upright instead of stacking! Thanks for the heads up on that, Rox!
Wow! I'm so glad you've posted this since I've been fretting over this very issue. I have all mine standing upright in a plastic bin right beside my work area, all in cases. Well, my burgeoning collection of BGs is quickly outgrowing the space, which I hate cause I need them 'right there, right now'.
It's also been driving me nuts to have all the cases all over the place when I use multiple bgs at once (that's happening alot lately). I'm now about to set them all free!!! I think I'm gonna try to take them out of their snug little cases so I can get to them more easily. (Never for the other sets though!)
Thanks for the discussion!

I store mine out of boxes next to each other, not on top of each other. Is that ok? And I've got about a dozen, with three more on order. And I want MORE!!!

Mine are in the cases on the top shelf so I can see them. They are out and visible. I love my bg stamps. Tonight I used the cheesecloth one on every card and layout. Loving that one.
I store mine the same way AmyR does. I put them in the box that is the next size down. The stamps "just" fit in the box, so the box isn't really taking up any extra space. I don't have to worry about any ink being left on the stamp (even though I clean them).

The post I read on another board was discussing general stamp storage and they said to never go over three high because the rubber can spread out due to pressure over time. Emily uses her stamps so often that I don't think they are sitting long enough in one spot to cause damage.
I store my sets in drawers in the cases up to or five high and never had a problem and it's been at least two years this way.
If it's something you don't use often I'd be more careful.
I store some Christmas designs in drawers like yours and they are fine, that is the ideal way to store them, just don't smooch together to tight.
I'm so glad you asked this ?. I have been thinking of asking if anyone stores them without the cases. I currently have my backgrounds in their plastic cases, stacked on top of each other on a shelf. I am planning a change of scraprooms. I have been thinking about what things I want to do in the new space. One of my ideas is to take these stamps out of their cases, and possibly display them some where in arms reach of the desk for stamping. I think the boxes just take up extra room, and if they were easier to see and reach I would get my stamping done faster. Not that I want to rush the process but currently I have to go thru 100's of things to get to what I want!

I tried keeping them out of the cases and it didn't work for me...mainly because I ran out of good space for them like that. Plus I hate when they are a bit dirty and got the label of the one next to it dirty...yes, I'm OCD, I know:-) SO I put them back in the clamshells. I'm going to redo my room as soon as we get the chance to go to an IKEA so I may revamp again...we'll see...
