Default TLC255 ~ Scratch N' Sniff ~ (01/11/10)

Good evening, friends!

This week we are making Scratch N Sniff cards!

First off, were going to need smell ovision for this technique! I thought it would bring some good smelly fun to the TLC.

You will need:
  • Stamps
  • Clear embossing powder (I found UTEE to work best, but regular will work, too)
  • A smelly additive (i.e. Kool Aid (non-sugared kind), Sugar free Jello, non-alcohol based perfume, scented oil, etc)
  • Versamark
  • Heat gun
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ *~
You are first going to create your embossing powder/scent mixture. If you are using Kool-Aid, the consensus is to use a 2 to 1 ratio (2 parts embossing powder to 1 part kool-aid).

If you are using a solid stamp (say, for instance, the fruit from Tart n Tangy), stamp in your desired color first. Then stamp over it with your versamark. Then add your smelly embossing powder and heat set.

Make sure you do not use kool-aid with sugar added. It will heat and burn your paper!

I started playing with the technique and found that you can also use non-alcohol based perfumes. I poured a generous amount of UTEE onto a piece of scratch paper and spritzed it with the perfume. I let it sit for about hour, then I used it to cover my image.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* ~*

There is some school of thought that says heating your image from underneath works best, but I found that to be cumbersome and I had no problem going direct with heat. I did keep my heat gun on the low setting.

***Be careful who you give these cards to if you use perfumes! Some people are allergic***

Jane (Whoopsie Daisy here on SCS) wrote a great tutorial on the technique HERE. Thanks, Jane, for letting me use your tute!

You can also find lots of chatter on the subject in this THREAD.

Please remember to use KEYWORD TLC255 (no spaces) when uploading to the gallery.

ALSO: When uploading, please tell us what you used to make your scent so we can all *imagine* what it smells like!

You can see my sample HERE:

~ I Sewed A Card and I Liked It! ~

To view the TLC255 gallery, go HERE.

If you have any questions or issues uploading, please do not hesitate to post your question here or send me a PM!

Have fun, girls!

Sounds like this is something for tomorrow, too messy and involved for this late night stamper! Holly, thanks for the push to try this new-to-me technique. Maybe it will inspire me to do a kids class again!

Oh I will have to play after work today! I've never made a scratch 'n sniff card! Very cool!

I have a question about using scented oil....I have some that smells like vanilla cupcake or something. Anyway, would I just add some to the UTEE like you did with the perfume?

I'll check back later to see if someone could answer for me.

Thanks for this fun technique!

This is the same question I am wondering about. Would love to try this. I have two scented oils. How do you use it instead of the Kool-aide and perfume???

I used the Scented Oil and was not sure but I added a few drops to my image in between the Versamark and the UTEE and it worked great ! it darken the image just a tad but then again my oil wasnt clear (silly me ) and then I added a bit more UTEE to those drops then heat set it . that was about 6 hours ago my card smells like I just did it and you cant tell where it was darken a bit ! Hope this helps....Kelly

OMGosh...I haven't done one of these in a VERY long time...I got all excited and ran out to the kitchen and then could find the lemonade mix! Well, after 8 unsuccessful minutes, I finally found it...In the SUGAR container....(I swear, these guys I live with are driving me nuts! Okay...one I married so that's all my fault, but the little one??? You'd think he'd get some of my smarts, right?) LOL

Oh! Vanilla would smell awesome! I would go with the UTEE, especially with an oil. Make sure you let it "dry" for a good amount of time after making your ''mixture". You may need two coats, too.

Another winner, Holly!! It was easy to do and with no "not-on-hand" supplies. I knew I wanted to do lemons when I saw the challenge. Most people like the smell of lemons and it is neither feminine or masculine. Thanks!

Holly, great challenge. I made a faux chocolate candy bar with a mixture of 2Tablespoons of UTEE and 1 Tablespoon of baking cocoa. It really smelled like chocolate when I was heating it. It still has a chocolate smell when I rubbed my fingers over the chocolate.

Ok finally finished! Whew! I tried several times to get the right mix of UTEE and scented oil...but in the end only one layer of the UTEE worked well. Anymore than that and it really discoloured and bled.

I don't know how to link my submission to this blog, but, this one is a toast to you Holly and your new position as our fearless technique leader. Look carefully on the right side of the card and you will see an acetate martini glass and yes it smells like a martini! I spent more time in the kitchen developing the right concoction to smell like a martini than I did making the card. Eventually I used a sugarless drink mix with a ground up juniper berry and it smells exactly like a martini. Cheers, Elizabeth

This card was 5 days in the making! No reason for it just a busy week....
I haven't made one of these in a long time and forgot how good they really do smell.
