If you think of digital stamps like normal stamps you won't go far wrong, you can print them out on white paper/card and colour them in with your watercolour pencils or markers etc or you can print them directly onto coloured paper/card like I have here. I printed mine a few times then cut away the sections I didn't want to decoupage it and give it a 3-d effect.
The benefits of digital stamps are that you can resize them to any size you like to match your project and you get a good image each time and a negative is that they are tricky to emboss although it is possible if you use a medium on the cardstock (apparently).
Also there are some awesome images on the internet if you do a search for clip art or colouring pages
