Default DGC02 10.28.08 (colour isolation)

Welcome back for week 2 of Digi
Challenges!
DGC02: This challenge has 2 levels. Beginners are challenged to remove the colour from a photo so that it looks B&W or is Sepia (I have put some instructions below the main challenge for this, but the directions are for PSE since that is what I have). More advanced digi scrappers' challenge is going to involve making a page with a re-coloured picture. So, pick a picture that you want to have in Sepia or B & W on your page, but you want to leave one element coloured. Heres a two examples from me:

My Great-Grandfather

Summer

Here are 2 more I found in the gallery:

kcherrie's page

Craftytinkerbell's page

Heres how to do it: Make a copy of the picture (there are a few ways to do that). Make the top layer in sepia or B & W tones and leave the bottom layer in colour (I will put some instructions below these instructions for changing the tones of the picture, if you do not know how). Magnify your picture quite a bit, so that you can see the small details. Then, take your eraser and start erasing the sepia/b & w from the top picture and you should see the colour come through from below. Only erase the sepia/ B & W in the areas that you want colour to show through. If you are doing large areas, you can make the eraser big, and then make it small to go around the edges. Remember to take your finger off the mouse every so often so that if you have to `undo something, you arent undoing everything youve done. Once youve finished working with the picture, merge the layers together (in PSE, you highlight the 2 layers on the right side of the screen, right click on the mouse and you will see `merge layers' at the bottom), and then create your page like the photo was a regular photo.

Instructions for sepia/ B & W: Heres the basic instructions for changing colours within PSE. It may be similar to other programs, but there may be big differences. Go to `enhance along the top, and choose `adjust colour. Then choose `adjust hue/saturation. Make sure the `colourize box is ticked in the bottom, right corner. Then play around with it until you have the colour you like. For sepia, you will probably want hue and saturation in the low 20s

If you have a different program and you find that my directions do not work for your program and you are able to figure how to do it with your program, feel free to post the directions for your program. That way, more people will get to play

Jennie posted the Storybook directions - Thanks Ellie!!!! I layered the photos as you described, then selected the b&w one. In the Tools tab, you can click on "Wand" - then click on the part of the photo that you would like to erase for the color to shine through from the bottom b&w photo underneath.
That was it! I love how it looks

Have fun!!

If you play along, please share your hard work with us and upload to your gallery! Make sure you add DGC02 to your keywords (additional keywords are OK, just separate them with commas), and PLEASE post a link here in this thread; we would NOT want to miss it! Also, if you aren't a FAN CLUB member, please observe the NO UPLOAD on SUNDAY rule!

You can find all submissions for this challenge here: DGC02

SBC's Information Thread: Everything you need to know to participate!

The OPD (One Page Doc, aka: Master Challenge Thread) that includes all challenges on one page for your printing convenience can be found here: OPD

If you have any questions please feel free to contact any member of the SBCT (ScrapBook Challenge Team) via pm or simply post in this thread.

Fun challenge, I love doing this!!!
This is also a perfect challenge for non-digi scrappers to play along with and make a hybrid page!

Everyone is doing such great pages!

Remember that there is no wrong way to do it! I am sure that most of the things I do with digi, are not done the `right way', but who cares if it works!

Thank you, thank you for the challenge! I've never tried to do the selective coloring - thought it would be out of my range ;) Turned out to be extremely simple!
I'm using StoryBook Creator Plus by Creative Memories. I layered the photos as you described, then selected the b&w one. In the Tools tab, you can click on "Wand" - then click on the part of the photo that you would like to erase for the color to shine through from the bottom b&w photo underneath.
That was it! I love how it looks

I'm got a page in the works when I get to sit down at the computer at home. I'm a slow scrapper, whether it be paper or digi, but I'm working on it!

I have to tell you, these new challenges are so wonderful. I love how you're giving a little tutorial with each challenge. When it's broken down into little lessons, it's not so overwhelming. Thank you for doing this, momof2stampers (I'm sorry, don't think I know your actual name!)

Speaking of names, I just noticed your new forum rank name--*down and digi* -- how clever and cute. Love it! Can't wait until I reach 20,000--gee, I only have a little over 10,000 posts to go.

Thanks again for starting this new thread.

Thanks for the great challenge. I actually did this the most simple way...I used Picasa2 (free photo editing program from Google) and just used the focal b&w option under the effects tab.

Here is my page: I am Thankful for...

Didn't realise another challenge was up and just found it. I think this technique was the first ever thing I learnt how to do in Photoshop some years back when I recoloured my kids santa hats in their Christmas pics. I didn't realise it was relatively easy to do. Here's a layout I did recently with this technique in it for a Speed Scrap.

and another I did for a class over at Jessica Sprague's site (one of my fave layouts).

I might have to do a new layout with this technique just to say I've participated in it!
