DONE! 3D Decor Not-So-Secret Sister Swap

Jabauer hosted a wonderful Birdhouse SS Swap and it inspired me to think it would be fun for other types of 3D Decor items too.

The goal is to have fun and create something special for your SS. Its a challenge that way, however, if there are types you just feel you wouldn't be able to create, don't let it stop you from joining -- PM me about what you don't think you can make, and I'll try to accomodate matching up folks where they are comfortable. For example, if you just don't have anything to be able to create a Steampunk item, let me know. Though most SS's list a few styles and types of things they would love to receive too!

Here's the Details:

1 - Join by posting in this thread and posting your answers to the survey (next post) questions AND PMing me your mailing address.

2 - On Aug. 1st, I will assign names in pairs (you send to each other).

3 - You create a 3D Decor item based upon your SS's responses to the survey.

4 - You must mail the item so she receives it no later than 9/30/13. You must provide proof of mailing it by 9/28/13 here on this thread, i.e. post a Tracking #. Those who don't post that information by that date will be considered a flaker. As this is a Secret Sister Swap, SCS Rules are that any flakers will be kicked off of SCS. Don't join if you can't commit. I recommend working on the project right away and mailing early so as to avoid any problems or last minute issues.

5 - Be sure to post regularly in this thread, at least once a week please so as to check in and let us know you are still participating. There may be additional questions posted too to help everyone get to know each other and help sisters create their gift.

6 - There is not a dollar limit on the item you create, but it should be at least 6" in size, must be 3D, should have embellishments of some sort to it, made with quality to last and custom crafted based upon the survey your SS posts. Could be a set or kit of items based upon their posts also, i.e. a Fairy Garden (so many altered/crafted minis to make a scene at least 6" total) or a set of 3 small birdhouses altered that lined up are at least 6" total, etc...

7 - As this is a Papercrafting site -- You must also include a handmade card or tag with the item for your SS, telling her a little about why/how you made what you made for her. :)

8 - You must post a Thank You here to your SS also so we know it was received. Pics would be great to share if you can also!

Would you like something for wall or to sit freestanding?
- Either

What kind of 3D Decor you would like to receive? Please list at least 3 different types of items to inspire your sister.
- Paper Mache box or something I can use to store items in also; Wall Decor; Doll or similar freestanding decor item; Birdhouse/Cage; A Fairy Garden Kit or house for it; dress form; altered wall clock

Would you like something seasonal or holiday decor? If so, which season/holiday?
- Fall/Thanksgiving (not Halloween), Valentines, Spring or Christmas

What colors would you like most?
- I like warm and nature colors, nothing bright. Like browns, teals, plums and deep warm reds

What themes/style would you like to receive? (i.e. country, primitive, Victorian, Steampunk, Shabby Chic, Modern, Nature, etc...)
- Nature, Craftsman, Christian, Eclectic Artsy Mixed Media like in Cloth Paper Scissors Magazines
- I am also thinking about doing a small fairy garden in my new yard this Fall. So any kind of small fairy home or garden item (like garden gate or trellis or bench seat setting) would be great too. I'd be fine if it wasn't 6" one piece but the setting totalled that when laid out, i.e. a bench with small planter or such (small dollhouse size items).

Any tips or hints for your SS of what you would like or not like?
- No skulls/vampires/zombies or sarcasm; Love birds, dragonflies, trees, leaves, warm things, Christian/Scripture, music

Would you like something seasonal or holiday decor? If so, which season/holiday? I would love something for Halloween or thanksgiving.

What colors would you like most? muted shades of blue, green and red

What themes/style would you like to receive? (i.e. country, primitive, Victorian, Steampunk, Shabby Chic, Modern, Nature, etc...) I am a nature girl at heart and also like distressed and vintage style

Any tips or hints for your SS of what you would like or not like? There are only adults in my home so nothing juvenile. I love anything that is recycled, worn or nature inspired.

What room will this item be for? Craft Room, Dining Room, or Family Room

Would you like something for wall or to sit freestanding? Either is fine.

What kind of 3D Decor you would like to receive? Please list at least 3 different types of items to inspire your sister. altered item book, jar, box, or canvas, birdhouse

Would you like something seasonal or holiday decor? If so, which season/holiday? Halloween (Even "Da de Muertos"), Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, or something Patriotic (for the 4th, Memorial Day, Veteran's Day)

What colors would you like most? Honestly I like all colors except neons, I leave this up to the Artist. Use whatever colors work best for your creation.

What themes/style would you like to receive? (i.e. country, primitive, Mixed Media, Victorian, Steampunk, Shabby Chic, Modern, Nature, etc...)
Love Steampunk, Goth, Shabby Chic, Nature, Art Deco, Art Nouveau
Any tips or hints for your SS of what you would like or not like? I've started to collect fairies, mermaids, and sugar skulls. Honestly I love anything handmade. I don't care for country (roosters, farm, cows, etc) items. I think because my step-mother did craft shows on the Eastern Shore and we were constantly painting country-theme decor items.

Have any of you seen the Fairy Gardens that are now trending to make?
I first saw the Botanical Gardens here were offering classes to make miniature fairy gardens (in terrariums/planters) but they filled up so fast I couldn't get into one. Then when I went to Denver, Tagawa Nursery there has lots of them in their building as displays on how to make them in planters/terrarium houses or in the garden/yard. They are SOOOO cute, but their prices for little accessories are so expensive.

Link to their site: Tagawa Gardens, One of Colorado's Largest Garden Centers : Fairy Gardens Keep in mind the fairies are only 2"-5" in size really, and most miniatures are like those for small dollhouses. For example, they had a 1.5" watering can there but it was $7!

Some examples too: http://pinterest.com/search/pins/?q=fairy%20garden

A cute one made in a birdbath: http://pinterest.com/pin/212021094930606413/

Cute idea -- in an old drawer: http://pinterest.com/pin/221802350370700246/

I have a few of these old washtubs and what a great way to use them too! http://pinterest.com/pin/356488126724720315/

SO, I'm wondering if anyone else would be interested in a swap to make little miniatures for fairy gardens??

Sugar Skulls, are candies made from sugar formed into a skull shape. They are given to both the living and the dead on Da de Muertos (Day of the Dead, I think in Mexico they celebrate on Oct. 30, in the States it is celebrated on Nov. 2 -All Soul's Day). The skulls aren't meant to be decorated as something morbid or creepy, but with happy, bright colors. I just find the way different artist decorate them to be fascinating.

Thanks, Monica! I will think about how to do that swap and may post it in the next month. I will certainly let you know if/when I do! I will check out the sugar skulls thing too!

Hi Annette! Good to 'see' you again too! Still teaching?

Hope everyone has a pleasant weekend.

Monica, those fairy gardens are beautiful. TFS!

So tempting Susan, but I need to think about it before I commit.

Since I know alot of you here are prayer warriors, I will ask you keep my family in your prayers. My MIL fell earlier this week and sustained a head injury. The Dr's have done all they can do for her and we have moved from treating the injury to keeping her comfortable and pain free. Please pray not only for her comfort but for the family as well.

My weekend distraction

1 Attachment(s)
Here is what I made this weekend as a calming distraction.
It's a paper mch box , about 12" high and the roof comes off so I can store items inside too. Had fun making it.

I mod podged the papers on it all, then created a door from cardboard covered in the papers, hinged with Tim Holtz hinges, added the hanging birdcage charm and a rhinestone brad door handle, canvas mesh fencing all around with canvas flowers for embellishing, clear plastic packaging for 'glass' in the windows and lace to hang inside as curtains. I also lined the back wall inside with a bright paper though you can't tell from this. DH recommended putting lights inside but I'm not sure if I want to do that or use it as a container. :) I am thinking about adding scrabble tiles for the sidewalk too and more items as I go, but since I have limited supplies right now til our house is completed in September and we move in, this is where I am at so far.

But I thought I'd share as an inspiration for this swap too. The paper mache house was only $5.99 at Hobby Lobby and was half price this week!

ktfabian2 07-22-2013 04:47 PM

Hi Susan (and everyone),

This sounds like SO much fun, but, with school starting in about 3-4 weeks, I'm going to have to pass. I hope you'll do it again in the Spring because I'd love to do it! But I've sworn not to take on any more swaps after I finish the Prima Dolls, until school is well under way and I see how I'm doing.

Have fun, everyone!

StampinGoodDeeds 07-23-2013 08:07 AM

Hi Tracy - I understand all too well having gone to school and worked and was a single mom at that time. Best wishes on it and take your time... swaps are always around.

ALL: PLEASE BE SURE YOU HAVE PM'D ME YOUR MAILING ADDRESS AND LET ME KNOW IF YOU DON'T WANT TO SEND INTERNATIONAL (i.e CANADA).

I WILL TRY TO GET SS'S ASSIGNED ON THURSDAY!

2busyscrappin 07-29-2013 04:53 PM

I'm willing to ship international. I don't want anyone to feel bad if they don't want to because I know it can be pricy.

I actually keep forgetting I'm in Canada...lol..I think that's probably why I haven't joined a swap or anything else for that matter in a long while.

Just a couple more days until we get our partner!
