If your X-acto knives and awls (aka pokey things), don't come with protective caps, you can "stab" the ends of them in plastic/rubber corks that are used in wine bottles. Don't use real corks...

If it's any consolation, I bought "Puck Play" from eBay for $50...I just had to have it. I use it all the time and am happy I bought it.
