Have you tried the mats that are used to protect the bottom of an oven from spills? They are a little more stiff than a Tim Holtz mat, but may be a lot cheaper for you

I use the magnet to store alphabets, it keeps all the letters in place and I don't have to dig around or spread them all out to find the letter I want. And some of my die sets that have many pieces...
