I always tape my die to the paper too. I use the blue masking tape that painters use, it's easy to take off, doesn't tear and each piece can be re used several times.

I usually just use chalks for my backgrounds. I find them quick and easy to apply with either a cotton bud or a ball of cottton wool. They give a nice "soft" looking background.

I too use an Epsom ink jet with digies and Xpress it card and have no trouble. Mostly I use Memento Tuxedo Black on the Xpress and have no probs at all.
