I buy 6x6 almost exclusively unless the manufacturer only makes an 8x8. They take up less space and are less expensive than 12x12 pads or collections so I can have more!

Another tip I would add is to mist your card stock VERY lightly with water before running it through. It loosens the fibers of the paper and allows a really nice deep, crisp emboss.

How about cutting it out as a circle and making it the center of a rosette badge? Use a pleated paper underneath and have some streamers of paper or ribbon from the bottom and make it the centerpiece...
