Default Linen background without the stamp

Linen Texture from Nylon Screen Mesh August 31, 2006

I keep seeing all these wonderful cards that have used the linen background stamp. But of course, no, I dont have that stamp (yet). So I thought about what types of things I had around the house that I could use to get the same effect. What I discovered is that a piece of Nylon Screen Mesh (you know, what you use for windows to keep the mosquitoes out) is a perfect match.

Here are the tools you will need:
1) A piece of nylon screen mesh (buy a roll at the hardware store)
2) A piece of cardstock
3) An Ink pad- same color as the paper or any color you desire
4) 2 Brayers- one that will get ink-covered, the other that will stay clean
5) A piece of scrap paper.

Heres the technique I used:
1) Ink up the brayer
2) Roll ink on the screen mesh that is sitting on your working area (protective paper covered, of course)
3) Place cardstock over screen mesh
4) Place scrap paper over the cardstock and screen mesh
5) Roll the clean brayer over the back of the cardstock
6) Lift and VOILA! You have a very nice piece of linenized paper
7) The clean up is simple- run the mesh and brayer under the faucet!

The funny thing is that this little endeavor turned into one of those look around the house and attempt to ink or stamp anything that doesnt move! So I found that a snip off my shower exfoliating puff ball was a nice texture as was the bag the glass marbles I just bought at the craft store! So no holds barred, I guess!

Hope this inspires!!!

Thanks Makani! I had tried to use some screening scraps for texture, without success, but I didn't think of using my brayer(s) and doing it "upside-down" -- I'll try again with your good idea.

What a great idea - I don't have the linen stamp either and the great thing about this idea is that you can make the background linen size as big as you like!! That is a real bonus! Thanks...

I like the linen look a lot, too, and don't have the BG stamp. Did buy some linen CS from Marco's Papers, but only have it in ivory. Saved your technique and will try it out. Thanks!

Smile Brayer optional on Linen Technique

I did it at first without the brayer- just padded the ink pad on the nylon screen and then used my hands to rub the cardstock on the inked nylon screen.

Just made me nervous- so the brayer made it simpler.:-D

Could that Word file be posted as a pdf file? I don't have Word on my computer and I'd love to see the card samples! Thanks. In the mean time, I'm also going out to the garage to find some screen scraps!

Smile here are some pictures instead

I don't have a PDF making program.... but I will attach 3 pics that show the technique instead. The only pic that's not there, but is easy to figure out is when I put the cardstock on the inked up screen mesh. I now put a piece of scrap paper over the cardstock and then roll over it with a clean roller (or my hands). (I added in the scrap paper since doing this initially because it made sure I didn't get the clean brayer inked up from the inked screen which is larger in width/lenth than the cardstock. clear as mud?:o )

The directions, though, are already written in the first post of this thread.

Hope you have fun making some "linenized paper"... oh... and try out other textures... I chopped off a piece from my puff ball facial scrubber thingy- great texture... still looking for more ideas too... I'm thinking this could be used on big flat Fall leaves, a piece of tarp material, oh- anything with texture that can lie flat...

Thank you! Yep, clear as mud. I don't have an SU brayer, but I have this roller thingy from pampered chef that may work.

Regarding the PC roller, I meant I will use it over the scrap paper to roll the inked screen onto the cardstock. I'll have to pat my ink pads on the screen to transfer the ink. I have to make a birthday card tonight for a friend so I think I'll practice this on some scrap paper to see how it works.

Smile rollers and good luck

I think a rolling pin would even work, or a wine bottle... oh our houses are probably FULL of goodies that could live in our stamp rooms!

Good luck... and post here how it goes...

That screen tip is great for a card that is bigger than the Linen stamp (which I had the other day!) now I can get the Linen look on EVERYTHING! THANKS.
