Photo Challenge #132 ~From the Book... {06/21/2011}

3 Attachment(s)
I do hope this will be an accessible challenge and that it's not just me who is an avid reader. My idea was that your photo should connect with a book - the title, a character, a scene. I know it's fawn time, which would work for Bambi. Unfortunately I couldn't find the deer herd the last time I was in the park...The Tale of Tom Kitten...Three Men in a Boat... it's wide open to interpretation so I hope you'll play along.

Photo Challenge Rules:
~ Have FUN with this! There are no right or wrong photos.
~ Take as many pics as you want, share the few you like best.
~ Please share only current photos, taken after the challenge was issued.
~ We CANNOT upload our photos to the SCS galleries. You may upload them as an attachment or host them from your blog or any online photo hosting site. Just provide the direct link to the photo in your post and also make sure that it is not from a password protected album.
~ Just a reminder that we are a family-friendly site if you are sending others off this site to view photos in an album hosted elsewhere.
~ You can jump in and start any of the photo challenges at anytime..
~ Again - HAVE FUN

The Street Performance World Championships were held here last weekend; part of it was a (successful) attempt to set the world record for the most Wallys in one place - 3657. A free paper here was one of the sponsors, and their distributors were dressed as Wally all week. I am not normally good at asking people can I take their picture, but this guy knows me well enough to have two papers ready when he sees me coming, so I felt OK asking.

Tale of Squirrel Nutkin. OK, so he was a red squirrel, but they're on the brink of extinction here thanks to the introduction of the greys.

It Must Have Been Something I Ate (Jeffrey Steingarten). We had ratatouille tonight :D.

armadillo 06-21-2011 04:47 PM

Love that squirrel.

ShaddyBaby 06-21-2011 05:54 PM

Oh, great challenge! Now to decide what to take pictures of and books to connect those pics to.

Sabrina, I am more than an avid reader.....I'm more like a voracious reader! I read everything in sight! This should be easy for me!
I saw the rcord makingh Wally group on the news this week....really cool! The squirrel is so cute and that ratatouille is making my mouth water!

I went to the park again to look for a Bambi - but I spent so long watching a moorhen working on her nest to acommodate her growing chickens that I ran out of time.
I did get a photo of clouds, though, which I'll go and post on that thread.
I got some cute ducklings too, but here are my Ugly ones, as per Hans Christian Andersen and The Ugly Duckling.

Confusing to me that both the coot and moorhen chicks have red beaks, while the adult coot is distinctly white.
But since one of these was on a coot's nest and the other was being fed by a coot (different lake, probably younger) I am pretty sure they are both young coots.

I just shocked when I got home this morning from dropping my oldest son off at the fire station and saw this little guy in my yard. Based on Peter Rabbit.

Diana, these little bunnies are so cute, but they sure cause a lot of damage to a garden! Great that you were quick enough to get a photo of him!
I was out with my camera yesterday and managed to get a few shots.
The first photo is on that was in our local free newspaper. My two nephews are in a band called Settler's Creek. They were a cover band that played local pubs and public events. Over the past year they have been working on writing their own songs and have just released a CD. Settlers' Creek is a book by Carl Nixon.
Second photo is of the river that runs through our town. Book is called 'River of God' by Dutch Sheets....a book that has been a great blessing to me.
Third photo refers to the book 'Black Beauty'. I saw the horses in a field and tried to get close but forgot I was only wearing sandals and the ditch was full of water!

yellowrose46 06-25-2011 06:57 AM

P.S. My nephews are the one to the far left wearing a cap and the second from the right, all in black.

This morning I drove out to check on my favorite Saguaro to see if it was ever going to bloom (it isn't) and on the way home a bunch of hot air balloons were preparing to launch. I was so sure that there was a balloon in Around the World in 80 Days but was wrong. I did find a book called Curious George and the Hot Air Balloon.

Even though this isn't a current photo I thought I would submit it anyway. There is a children's book (rather old) about a burro called Brighty: The Grand Canyon.

Great shots. That is awesome about releasing a CD.

I love hot air balloons. Beautiful shot.

Cook22 06-26-2011 01:14 AM

Is there not a hot-air balloon in Around the World in Eighty Days. I could have sworn there was one on the cover of the edition we had when we were growing up.
I like your burro - he reminds me of the donkeys that we always see in Greece. One of the gorges we trekked, they had a few donkeys along it for emergency evacuations if anybody injured themselves and couldn't walk but wasn't serious enough to need a helicopter.
I love seeing rabbits in the wild like that - when my mum was dying we stayed in a house nearby where a local church meets, and I could see rabbits in the driveway every morning.
Love your river scene, Ita. Shame about the sandals and ditch of water. I ended up with a few nettle stings last week through paying more attention to the ducks than to where I was walking.
Your nephew in the black - something about the way he's standing made me think of Alan Alda, could be because we've just finished watching the first series of MASH. Good luck to them with their CD.
On the CD note, isn't it just typical! DH has been recording an album with a church up in the North. I was told the producer would be taking cover shots, so all I had with me the day I took photos was my point and shoot, no off-camera flash, no tripod for the low light conditions, no nothing. But the producer forgot his camera so my photos are the ones that have got used for the album and the press release, and there's only one in the whole bunch I took that I'd consider half-way decent.

princessdi69 06-26-2011 04:28 PM

Even though I have been enjoying watching the rabbit in our yard, it is starting to dig holes. DH watched him through the window as it dug around one of our bushes in our walkway. hmm... he is cute but not that cute to destroy our yard.

armadillo 06-26-2011 05:44 PM

Sabrina, I did another check on Google and YES, there is a hot air balloon in Around the World in 80 Days!

The best I can do for Bambi. Not quite a fawn, but he's certainly very like the cover of the paperback edition we used to have when I was a child.

Here's the tin man from The Wizard of Oz.

Cook22 07-04-2011 12:20 PM

Claps hands - that's a brilliant capture. I love it!! His feet look like sardine cans or something, but I can't work out his hat/helmet, whatever...

armadillo 07-04-2011 04:37 PM

I agree, the feet look like sardine tins. The tin man is made completely from various sizes of tin cans. The eyes and buttons are bottle caps and the hat a funnel. The ears are bottoms or tops of a can. Years ago someone in the park where I live made them and I think this is the last survivor.

yellowrose46 07-04-2011 07:26 PM

What a cool 'tin man'!

princessdi69 07-05-2011 02:10 AM

That tin man is great.
