Default Photo Challenge #97 ~ Night Life {10/19/10}

I mentioned that I'd taken some night scenes while we were on holidays, thinking towards a challenge. I was hoping to add a star shot while we were down in Clare for the weekend (too much light pollution here), but it was too cloudy. And I was too tired last night to go down to the bridge over the motorway and try for light trails. So my only samples are both from Greece. The one of the castle took about 3 nights of trying before I got something I was happy with, the one of the harbour was a lucky first shot - or else I'd been learning from the previous three nights.
Think cities at night too, if you have any illuminated buildings.
And come back to this one again when Christmas illuminations go up .
HINT - my camera has a noise reduction setting. It made a big difference.
Being on holidays I didn't have a tripod, but balancing my camera on the pier or some pilings and using the cable release seems to have done the job ok.

Photo Challenge Rules:
~ Have FUN with this! There are no right or wrong photos.
~ Take as many pics as you want, share the few you like best.
~ Please share only current photos, taken after the challenge was issued.
~ We CANNOT upload our photos to the SCS galleries. You may upload them as an attachment or host them from your blog or any online photo hosting site. Just provide the direct link to the photo in your post and also make sure that it is not from a password protected album.
~ Just a reminder that we are a family-friendly site if you are sending others off this site to view photos in an album hosted elsewhere.
~ You can jump in and start any of the photo challenges at anytime..
~ Again - HAVE FUN

Those are nice. Do the night shots have to be of buildings?

No - they don't have to buildings. (The time difference meant I wasn't around, I only posted just when I was off to bed).
If we didn't have light pollution here I'd be taking star shots too, so this is perfect. You're so lucky with night skies like that.

Great challenge, Sabrina! I wish I had checked for this last evening, as we have an almost full moon, but I think tonight is going to be cloudy with rain.
I love your gorgeous night photos.....especially the one with the water.
Love the shot of Monument valley too!

I got our this evening and took some photos around my neighbourhood. I did a little trespassing, but didn't get caught! I took these with my point and shoot without a tripod, so they turned out quite well, considering. the first photo is of a house that we in the neighbourhood call the 'mansion', the second is of my next door neighbour (a modest home just like mine) and the third is of 'the big house'. About 6 years ago, a millionaire from the city decided he wanted to build a home on the lake by us. He built a beautiful, well appointed home, not huge, but lots of fine details, and we call it the mansion. Then another neighbour got jealous and told his family that he would build a house bigger than that ( straight from the mouth of his 6 year old daughter) and tore down his perfectly good home and built a monstrosity of a huge home, which we all call 'the big house'.

I was just thinking it was almost a full moon when we were driving back from the country on Thursday night. Your shots of houses make me think a bit of Thomas Kincade, Ina - and the sky in the first one looks great too.
I'd love to see an owl in the wild properly!

Thanks ladies..this owl was in the yew "trees" right beside the house...I say trees because they are about 30' tall! A shrub normally, but these have had little to no grooming and shot up !....Taishea

Are yew trees normally shrubs over there? Here I'd expect them to be definitely on the tree side - and I've seen old ones that are as tall as poplars.

Last night was our church's annual Harvest party. Bon fire, non scary costumes, hay rides, barrel train rides, loads of fun. Here is everyone around the bonfire trying to stay warm as it was 40degrees in the dark and we are in a corner surrounded by trees. The other picture is of my 5 yr old niece (Little Red Riding Hood) and my 4 yr old daughter, Jorden (Snow Queen). Jorden is only 7 months younger!

I like non-scary costumes. About 95% of the trick-or-treaters we get are ghouls or vampires or witches, I love it when we get little pumpkins or bees or whatever...those two look sweet.
LOL, I can imagine how cold it was. We were visiting the couple who used to run the Scripture Union adventure centre here, and they'd asked me to bring my photo albums; we were looking at the ones from bonfires up on the mountain on Easter Saturday night, and laughing at how cold everybody looks in them.

I took some more night photos yesterday. The first one was taken as we were approaching Buffalo airport. I love the way the night lights stream when there is movement! Second and third photos were taken on the grounds of a hotel I passed on the way to my hotel ($44.95 a night) I shudder to think what the cost of a room would be in the hotel where I took the photos.

That's certainly some fancy hotel judging by its grounds! Hope you had a great time in TX. That is where the airport photo is, isn't it?

Sabrina, the airport photo was taken on the way home, just as we landed in the Buffalo, New York state airport. I had a wonderful time with the grandsons and my son in Austin and environs. It was also nice and warm, in the 70's and 80's and when I got home it was a lot cooler. We may even get a touch of snow this weekend!

I like the grainy atmosphere of the B&W, but the colour one is total fun.

Awesome night shots everyone. I too live in a small village where there is nothing exciting as the above to night shoot. Makes me want to travel just to take some night shots! lol

Thanks! I have a Nikon D60. I've had it for almost two years but I still have soooo much to learn. I just don't have the time to spend playing with it as much as I would like to.

I know what you mean. I actally have a Canon Rebel XS EOS, but all of the photos I submit to the photo challenges are taken with my point and shoot Nikon Coolpix! I need to learn a lot more about my DSLR. Also, I am on dial up internet and am waiting to get high speed before I upload the software for the Canon. Hopefully, my son-in-law will tet it done this weekend!

Beth, to get the best shots, you need to use a tripod and go with a long exposure. However, having said that, the shots that I have uploaded here were taken with a point and shoot Nikon coolpix without a tripod. I put the setting on 'night' and made sure to hold the camera really still throughout the exposure.

Haha, yeah! The good thing about Daylight Savings is that it gets dark earlier! I'm going to try to get some good traffic shots in our town one night. Only problem is there's hardly any traffic after about 5:00!!

even with a tripod...I got shaky pics...could have been the wind and the heavy lens onteh camera....and the fact I perched myself on a hillside...

Thanks, I'll have to try that out! I haven't got a tripod (yet) hoping to get one for christmas! i'm going to Niagara Falls this weekend and hoping to get some night shots of the lights/fireworks on/over the falls. wish me luck!

Have a great trip to Niagara Falls. Hopefully, there won't be too much mist. It's hard to get a close up shot, if there is a lot of mist, but you might be able to get some really good ones, if you are a bit farther away.
Will you be going to the American side, or the Canadian side?
