Default Photo challenge #82 Snail mail (05-30-2010)

Photo challenge #82 Snail Mail, where do you mail your cards from?
Angie is away this weekend and has asked me to host this week's challenge. We missed last week, so this will be challenge number 82. Snail mail, where do you post it? I have several different places I mail my cards and letters from. Have fun with this one.........take a photo of your post office, your own mail box or hunt down an unusual mail box or building. I'll be waiting eagerly to see what you come up with!
Photo Challenge Rules:
~ Have FUN with this! There are no right or wrong photos.
~ Take as many pics as you want, share the few you like best.
~ Please share only current photos, taken after the challenge was issued.
~ We CANNOT upload our photos to the SCS galleries. You may upload them as an attachment or host them from your blog or any online photo hosting site. Just provide the direct link to the photo in your post and also make sure that it is not from a password protected album.
~ Just a reminder that we are a family-friendly site if you are sending others off this site to view photos in an album hosted elsewhere.
~ Please jump in and join us in the photo challenges at anytime!
~ Again - HAVE FUN!

My first photo is of the mailbox outside the hospital where I work, second is of the post office in town, and the third one is an interesting mailbox I saw on my way home this morning.

Perfect timing. I have 3 regular places I post - boxes near my bus stop, near my house and - last resort, when I have to get it weighed - the post office. Queues, queues, queues. Have to post my BIL's present this morning, so it will be the PO/convenience store near work this morning. IF I make it into town this week, I'll take the GPO (General Post Office) which was one of the headquarters in the 1916 Uprising.

Sabrina, I'm really looking forward to seeing your photos. I've seen the post boxes in England, which are really neat, but I've never been to Ireland, so I'm looking forward to seeing your pics. I'd love to read a little history about the uprising too!

This is a typical pillar box (free standing post box) of the older type. (Same as the UK ones, Ina, just green instead of red). Some places in the city centre have double ones, with one side for Dublin county post and the other side for everywhere else. The more modern style is really just a box on a post...
The other photo is the old post office on the street where I work. It's still the sorting and delivery office and where people go to collect parcels, but buying stamps, collecting pensions and benefits and so on is at the back of a little convenience store across the road.

I also have another city centre post office in challenge #68

I have to go to town after work on Thursday unless I can find 8 matching buttons in my button box, so I'll hope to take a photo of the GPO then .

We don't have mailboxes here like you do in the States. At least, now there are more than there used to be, but usually wall-mounted ones. I remember being fascinated by the one in the Peanuts cartoons, so different to anything we had when I was a child.

You need to use the Advanced reply option. So where there are two buttons, one saying Quick Reply and one saying Go Advanced, hit Go Advanced.
Then under the box for typing text in, there's a long purple/grey bar saying Additional Options.
Click on Manage Attachments.
A dialogue box opens up, and you can link to where the file is on your PC.
(I've tried the Upload file from URL, but it always fails for me, so I just upload from my PC).
I know for me the dialogue box doesn't open up full-screen, so in that case you either need to enlarge it or else scroll around a bit to find the button to click to start the upload.
Make sure your photo is resized and not too large. I usually go for about 800x600 pixels
You can add up to three attachments to one post.
When you're done, there's a Close this Window button at the bottom.
Hope we see your photos soon .

Default Snail Mail

Hi all and if this works, thanks so so much, Cook22! The first little non-descript black box is attached to the side of our house but the mail man doesn't use it.. lol We have a small foyer before the inside door with a bench and yup, they are so nice as to place the mail on the bench. The second pic is the drive up box in the post office lot. Look at the yellow cement pillars on each corner. Someone must have tried to run over it once upon a time..lol And the third pic is our nice post office in our little town in Wisconsin. I'll try to remember to take my camera along for pics of others boxes who are designers. This is fun!!

Great - you've got it sussed. A drive-thru' mail-box, well I never!! That is new to me. Nice modern looking post office, too - wish the two in town near me were half as neat and clean looking as that.

Sabrina, Love the green mailbox. Too neat!

BittyBadger - Didn't even think of taking a picture of the drop off boxes!

It rained really hard last night (again tornado sirens were going off and I was outside taking pictures!) and I snapped this one of our sad little mailbox in the rain. Yes, that ribbon was our Christmas decoration, left it on as it helps the box stand out a little more. I'll have to take another picture when all the lillies are bloom as it's really pretty then around the mailbox.

Oh my, look at that rain! That's what I see in my mind when I read about mailboxes in American books (not the rain )It was a bit like that here this morning, but at least we don't (very, very rarely and then not really significant ones) get tornadoes.

I got by with not going into town last week as I found suitable buttons for DH's shirt locally, so the GPO will be another time. But I took this shot of a self-service station of which, thank goodness, there are more these days. Great for smaller packages, as I've sometimes had to queue for three-quarters of an hour in the local PO if I wasn't in work and had to get something in the post here.

Oh my goodness Bambi, it's raining buckets in the pic. We got a million dollar rain starting Thurs. I live in farmland country and it was so dry that cutting hay created dust. So this slow soaker is grand for us in central Wisconsin. Cook, I hope that service station that you have becomes popular here because it looks like a real time saver!! Did anyone think that mailboxes could be so much fun? lol

How clever! Makes me want to run out and shoot my mailbox too. Love looking at all the different styles. Maybe tomorrow I'll give this a try. So glad all of you posted. How fun.

The fish mailbox belongs to friends of mine. His children bought it for him for his birthday or something. The mailman pulls down the head to put in the mail. The other is a U.S. post office that is probably about 40 miles from me. Last year there was a Great Horned owl family living in the Saguaro. I drove up there many, many, many, many times at different hours taking pictures.

Sabrina, so glad you shared the photo of the self serve post box! We don't have anything like that in Canada either (at least not to my knowledge)
Armadillo, that is a fantastic fish mailbox! So cool! Love the southwestern look of the post office too!

My mailbox. Not exciting, but I shot it with the doors open to catch the sky.

Cool! Does that mean the other side is open all the time, or does it have a door too?

Here are a few more. The first one is a mailbox I have seen so often in my travels, but couldn't remember where I saw it, until I went for a drive today. Second one is a nicely painted mailbox of friends of mine. The third is the mailbox of a former boyfriend (now deceased). He put this mailbox up while I was seeing him. He thought he would be able to make an appropriate hole in the rubber tire (of a huge earth mover) with a bullet from his rifle. It didn't work, so he had to use a drill. Rather unique though, isn't it?

Default Frankenstein Box

I deliver mail in a small farm community so I see many boxes. I call this the Frankenstein box because it is made up of 2 boxes that were both hit by a snow plow, and is held together with metal strapping, nuts and bolts.

Default #82 Photo Challenge Snail Mail

What fun it is to see all these different kinds of mailboxes. Since we have had this challenge, I pay much closer attention to the boxes that I see now. I would like to thank everyone who made this such a fun project. Today I discovered a homemade 'surround' for their mailbox and thought that all 'chickies' might like to see it too. lol

I love the chickens! They would be perfect for my route since we are the chicken capital of Canada. Next week it Poultryfest. http://www.poultryfest.ca/index.php Honestly! A festival about chickens!
