Arrow Photo Challenge #80 ~ It's ALIVE! {5-2-10}

Thanks so much to Sabrina for hosting while I was away! And I apologize for missing last week, we weren't expecting to be away and without internet access. My dad is doing well and has his big major surgery coming up next week. Thanks for the well-wishes!

So for this week's challenge you need to seek out something that is alive! But it can't be a plant, needs to be something that can move on it's own, such as an animal, bug or person...

Photo Challenge Rules:
~ Have FUN with this! There are no right or wrong photos.
~ Take as many pics as you want, share the few you like best.
~ Please share only current photos, taken after the challenge was issued.
~ We CANNOT upload our photos to the SCS galleries. You may upload them as an attachment or host them from your blog or any online photo hosting site. Just provide the direct link to the photo in your post and also make sure that it is not from a password protected album.
~ Just a reminder that we are a family-friendly site if you are sending others off this site to view photos in an album hosted elsewhere.
~ Please jump in and join us in the photo challenges at anytime!
~ Again - HAVE FUN!

We recently 'raised' butterflies at school and here's one on my hand...

Cool challenge and wonderful photo. I can see the fuzziness of the body and the wings are so beautiful! God indeed is the Master artist! I know just what I am going to shoot for this one!

We saw a couple of butterflies in the garden today, but way too flighty to try to get any photo of them. Easy to see that's a *fresh* one in your photo, such strong bright colours and clean edges. We saw a very dilapidated Peacock a couple of weekends ago that must have over-wintered somewhere.
No surprise, then, that I resorted to our little friendly robin. Mind you, he/she wasn't being as cooperative today as recently. After I caught them raiding our back porch I decided they could come to hand - and they have!! I got DH to grab some shots, and I have to work out how to edit a little video clip of one of them chirping away demanding food.
For today, though, this was the best I could do...

Sabrina,
your robins do look quite different from our north American variety.

Yesterday, while trimming our hedge my husband called me out to look at something. This little guy was sitting there terrified. Husband thought it was a momma protecting her nest but by the looks of the little tufts of feathers on her head, I suspected it was a baby. I told him to leave it alone and the momma would come and get it when he was out of the way. Sure enough, a bit later a mocking bird flew up with a worm in it's beak, gave it to the baby and they flew off! The look on this little ones face is enough to make me wanna cry! But, all's well now that momma came back.

Cute, cute, cute. That big wide beak is a giveaway for a fledgling too. At least, all the little sparrows we had last year gaped like that, and at some stage ended up with normal little beaks.

The butterfly has such bright colors, very nice!
And the birds are so cute, Sabrina your robin is much smaller than ours.

I found a toad that just sat there and let me take photos; my presence wasn’t a bit of a bother to this reptile.

Roxie, I need that toad in my house, to catch all the flies my cleaning lady let in the house while I was out! I guess she left a window open that has no screen! Blagh!

Isn't he ugly. And fascinating. I don't believe I've ever seen one, just various frogs. But I loved the character of the Natterjack toad in Edward Eager's books.

It is a fascinating creature if you sit and study it...those eyes and bumps are amazing.
And no you can't get warts from them! That I do know!

O.K. Here are mine. I took my garbage to the dump today and just around the corner, I came upon this wonderful scene of horses under a tree. There were three foals and they were so cute! The third photo is about 1 mile from my house. I see these guys frequently, but never stop to take pictures.

Oh Ina, I wish there was any chance of seeing something like that on my route to our recycling/waste depot. Fat chance!!

That gecko is amazing, and the composition of the Kodomo shot, with it sprawled across the rock, and the toning colours, is really great.

Oh my! What wonderful photos everyone! Such color and gorgeousness (is that a word?)

It has been ages since I have done a photo challenge. We have been really busy since moving in Sept. We moved from New Mexico to Utah where hubby transitioned from Active Duty Army to the Reserves. We got approved for adoption through the state of Utah (we had been previously approved through New Mexico and just had to update our file when we moved). And we have been preparing for our little one to join our family. Someone we have known for a very long time came to us when she found herself unexpectedly pregnant and heard we were hoping to adopt, and asked us if we would be the parents of her baby. We are thrilled and honored and blessed.

I will try to get out this week and take some photos for this challenge. Until then, I look forward to seeing more of everyone else's photos!

Congratulations on the adoption underway, Sharon. My half-sis in MA adopted, I know how exciting it all is.

The bumble-bees were out in full force today .
It was grey and wet, so one of the bee photos is a bit dark (and of course it was when I had RAW switched off for taking card photos last night), but I've uploaded it anyway because I like the way you can see one leg wrapped around the wild garlic petal. The blue flower is a new clematis my aunt had just bought.

Great photos since I was here last!

And congrats to Sharon! How exciting!

This fancy fellow's photo was taken in my daughter's back yard, they are so funny to watch showing off for the ladies and those gals are are totally ignoring them! There were two males in my other photos but this one shows the detail the best. Enjoy Tom Turkey!

I've been looking at this website and forum for a long time but have not made any comments or submitted any photos. My husband got me a really nice camera about a year and a half ago and I found this picture forum and have enjoyed what I have seen. Hope it's ok for anyone to join in and their submit photos? This picture was taken of a very small lizard in our front yard this week.

Thanks,
Lynn

Thanks Armadillo! I'm not quite sure what they are called. I do know that they also turn a brown color if their surroundings are brown. I think they are adorable little guys....and I especially love their green color! : )

I knew exactly what i wanted to take a picture of for this challenge. Trying to get a picture of it has become a challenge in itself. Needless to say I haven't gotten the shot I want yet so had to move on. While I was weeding today, I almost touched this little guy as he was hiding under the weeds. He sat for the longest time (of course I told him not to jump while i was taking his picture for i'd surely scream! lol) for me too.

Gosh - some lovely photos since the last time I checked this thread. No turkeys or eagles here. Well, I think there are some Golden Eagles that have been reintroduced over in the west, but the farmers don't like them, and a lot of them have been poisoned.
I love your toad, Amber! He looks smaller than Roxie's.
Welcome, Lynn. And as armadillo said, you can add to any of the challenges. There's a master list of them at the top of the forum, if you want to see what some of them have been. I must say it looks more like a lizard than a gecko to me - but we don't have any reptiles here except one single type of lizard. We just get to see them when we go on holidays to Greece.

Ok, I'm really excited about this group and all the awesome photos that everyone has posted so far!!!!! Wow, there are some really great things to photograph out there! Also, thanks so much for the welcome!

Just a little while ago I looked outside my front window and saw this little guy in the front yard........so of course I'm off to get my camera and get a photo. (not like we haven't seen a million squirrels before but just had to do it...LOL!!) I took the pictures through the window so I wouldn't scare him by opening the door and was happy to see the photos came out fairly clear!

I know squirrels are rodents, but I find them pretty irresistible too. I like the first one, with that great texture from the grass behind him.
To save posting on the other thread, I know two or three people who have almost no sense of smell - and not a very strong sense of taste either. I know one of them, his mother always worries about would he smell something burning, say if he left something on the cooker or under the grill and forgot about it. But you can smell smoke - not a problem, then .

Good squirrel photos, he lurks like he is lurking! Because of the type of screens I have, I'm not able to take pictures through the window. Durn, as I used to see some good woodpecker opportunities.

Great squirrel pics. Squirrels are cute when they stay outside, but not when they come down the chimney and fight so hard they dislodge the chimney pipe and they escape into the house!

Thanks, everyone! Ina, gosh your post reminded me of an incident when we had a squirrel get into the house through the attic in a previous place we lived. I heard a noise upstairs and went to the entryway to see what it was and saw a brown squirrel running on the upstairs banister. What a shock.....no one was home but me. I didn't know exactly what to do so I went and got our Miniature Schnauzer to hopefully chase it out the door. Luckily he got it out of the house after some time. Our dog had the best time going after it but what a chase it was and I had to get a broom to get the squirrel off of the curtain rods!! It was chattering like crazy and so was I at that point!! LOL!! I now make sure not to feed them here at this house since I read they are territorial....but I think they're really cute to look at.

I finally got the pictures of the bird that I wanted for this challenge. I ended up taking them through the window.

Silly bird... he wanted that food bad!! My 7 yr old made the feeder as one of his first projects when he started Tiger Scouts this past year.

The pictures are all so wonderful. Its hard to believe that I never looked at these threads before. The pictures are so refreshing. I'll add a couple of our backyard friends. We have a groundhog who loves the corn etc that falls to the ground under the bird feeders. We also have a pair of mallard ducks who like that same corn. We didn't know it at the time but the pair was looking for a place to nest and decided to 'hide' under the hosta plants in the front yard. I won't distrub her for a pic. The final pic is our 4 legged munchkin who makes our life very happy.
