Default Photo Challenge #8 - It's all a BLUR! {11-9-08}

You get to be all blurry-eyed this week! Sounds like fun, huh? I know we've all seen those awesome pictures with a blur to them and it really adds great interest and a sense of motion. And I know that it's something that I would like to learn how to better achieve myself but, well when I try it, they don't always come out that great. Sometimes, they don't even come out at all! So that's what we're going to tackle this week - how to get a decent blurred picture.

Of course to get a blurred picture, you'll need to go after things that are either in motion or move the camera as you shot the pic to create the sense of motion/blur. And here are my only 2 tips on how to help capture a motion blur: Slow down the shutter speed and make sure the camera is secure if the object is is motion that you are trying to capture. I know, I'm just loaded with knowledge, right? Anyone else please feel free to add your knowledge, advice and any tips!

Photo Challenge Rules:
~ Have FUN with this! There are no right or wrong photos.
~ Take as many pics as you want, share the few you like best.
~ Please share only current photos, taken after the challenge was issued.
~ We CANNOT upload our photos to the SCS galleries. You may upload them as an attachment or host them from your blog or any online photo hosting site. Just provide the direct link to the photo in your post and also make sure that it is not from a password protected album.
~ Just a reminder that we are a family-friendly site if you are sending others off this site to view photos in an album hosted elsewhere.
~ You can jump in and start any of the photo challenges at anytime..
~ Again - HAVE FUN!

Two samples for ya this week. The first was taken in the car as we entered a mile long tunnel and the second is of a ride at the fair.

Great shots Angie!! Looks like you were travelling fast in the tunnel, and I love the blur of the ride. Beautiful!!

These are some of my favorite photos because they are so much fun to take!! The first one was at Disneyland. I used two neutral density filters and one polarizer on my lens to be able to slow the shutter down slow enough to take it. I also held up a graduated ND filter in front of the lens, which is why one side of the photo is a bit darker than the other. The ride itself moved but I was as still as I could be. The second is me panning with the airplane so it's in focus but everything else isn't. My lens had the same filters as the first did. The third is done by spinning the camera itself. Again, the neutral density filters and polarizer were used on the lens. I'll have to go out and shoot again as I love playing with motion!!

Default Photo challenge #8

Your shots are great, Angie. I especially like the tunnel shot!
Do you know how hard this was for me with my little digital camera? I spent 20 minutes yesterday morning in the freezing cold at the side of the highway, trying to get a shot of a car going by, but each time, my camera would adjust and I would get a clear photo of the car! I then found a bush and zoomed in on it and moved the camera, and this is what I came up with. More an out of focus shot than a blur, but that's the best I could come up with for now. I will go out later to try and meet the challenges I missed and try it again also.

Welcome Hannah! I just joined last week and intend to catch up on all the challenges. I'm not sure if there are any professional photographers here, but from what I can see, we run the gamut of people with expensive equipment, to people with cheap digitals (me). What we all have in common is a love of photography and from what I can see, a good eye! There are a lot of amazing photos here.
Your photos are good. I really like the blur on the weed pod (i'm not sure what it is called)

This is so much fun. I had to add this photo. I was taking pictures of my sister and I really don't know what happened... we were still setting the photo up and I must have touched my camera's really sensitive shutter release, and when we were looking through the pictures later, we found this one!

This challenge was a hard one for me. I have 3 that I am going to share. They were all taken at my middle school age son's basketball game. The first two were blurry by the camera, and the third was blurry by photo editing. I kinda like how my second picture almost looks like ghosts. I like how the soft focus brings your eye on the action in the third photo. What do you think?

MariLynn, how did you edit that photo that's blurry around just the outside? I've looked all over my photo editing stuff and my camera, but I can't seem to find the way to make the outside edge blurry like that! What photo editor do you use?

I use picasa2. It is under effects... soft focus. It allows me to determine how much blur and what size of focus.

Love that ghostly photo Marilynn.
I have some older blurry ones, but as the challenge says, must be taken after it is issued, so will have to find an opportunity.

I love the way the ball is blurred in the first photo and the middle photo is awesome. I think that is what the challenge is all about. Great job!

Hannah and Sue love the photos. I love the way the light is hitting the keys on the piano. The little baby photo is adorable I love placement of the baby. With it reaching up it was really eye catching.

Hannah, I love how you captured the...cattail looking plants. Was this an auto focus or did you manual focus this picture?

Default Red bellied blur

Just shot this this morning, first time ever that we have had a red bellied woodpecker come to our backyard feeders, this is a female making a getaway with a peanut.

Awesome photo! Not only wonderful to get such a close shot of this bird, but also the blur and movement of the wings that you captured is superb!

Finally taking some time to post to the challenges I've missed. Here's my attempt at panning.

During our last visit to the mountains, I spent 10 minutes and I can't tell you how many shots to try to get my son in crisp focus while he was sledding down the hill, and still have the background blurred. Finally, he decided he was done and called it a day, so I had to settle with this the best of the bunch.

This was a great challenge and I know I need to keep working on this!

I found this fluttering in the back yard today and the camera was in hand. Good timing!

The second is as it's flying away to a sunless corner of the yard so it made a great background.

Thanks for the challenge Angie!

I am so not good at deliberate blur - I like my photos to be sharp.
But I like the sense of movement in these two photos of a little baby robin flapping his wings and squawking to be fed .

Like your other shot of the quail, I think the background is great. Both pictures remind me so much of a photography book on Japanese gardens that I got for my BIL last year.

Nice shot of the quail Audrey. I don't think this is an actual 'blur' photo, but I really like it, so I will post it. It was taken last week when I took the lake and dam pictures. This one was taken downstream from the top of the dam. it was dusk, and too dark to really get a focused shot of the fishermen on the river, but I think it is a cool shot.

I agree, I very nice sort of abstract shot - it would look great on canvas.

One more 'blur' photo, taken on Friday evening when we went for a sunset photo shoot with a group from work. this is a t Lake Conestogo and the boat is coming in to dock as it was getting dark. This is how my little 'point and shoot' camera saw it.

Do I see a little bit of light painting there?

Audrey, I'm not sure what you mean by 'light painting'. I did not alter this photo at all. Just held my Nikon coolpix (point and shoot) really still on the twilight mode and because it was getting dark, it slowed the shutter speed down and showed a bit of time exposure, hence the line of the lights, as the boat was coming in to dock slowly.
