Arrow Photo Challenge #5 - Shadowy Silhouettes {10-19-08}

I've been getting such great responses via PM's and emails from ya'll about these challenges! I'm thrilled that every one has been enjoying them SO MUCH. Many of you have commented on how you're grabbing your camera every time you head out now and that you're viewing your surroundings in a whole new way! And I can see it in everyone's fabulous pictures! Just a reminder: the challenges are a way for you to get out, use your camera and to help you grow/perfect your skills. That's what makes them a challenge. I know weather or work schedules may not always cooperate each week, but let's keep the picture sharing to current images, taken for the challenges, not something you took a while ago, just as we do with the card challenges. You can always come back and add to any challenge at anytime.

Now onto the newest challenge....
I don't know about the rest of ya'll, but I've been noticing longer shadows and less light each evening. Seems like the fitting time of year to try at capturing some silhouette images! Basically a silhouette picture contains darker objects silhouetted against the setting sun or a halo of light. There is very little detail, more so only outlines.

Just to clarify for everyone though: you can do a silhouette shot of anything, at anytime of the day or lighting. I threw the word 'shadow' in front of it because I like fun titles (silly me!) and I kind of think of silhouettes as being a shadow but that doesn't mean you are limited to only shadows, nighttime shots, sunsets.... No restrictions with this one, just that there be some kind of silhouette image. I don't want that to throw ya.

silˇhouˇette:
An outline that appears dark against a light background; a dark image outlined against a lighter background; the outline or general shape of something; a two-dimensional representation of the outline of an object, as a cutout or configurational drawing, uniformly filled in with black, esp. a black-paper, miniature cutout of the outlines of a famous person's face.

Things to remember:
~ Have FUN with this! There are no right or wrong photos.
~ It's ok if you take 100 pictures or just one, but pick the one or two that you think best represent the challenge to share with everyone, not all 100 though!
~ Share only current photos, taken after the challenge was issued.
~ Please share photos taken by you.
~ We CANNOT upload our photos to the SCS galleries. You may upload them as an attachment or host them from your blog or any online photo hosting site. Just provide the direct link to the photo in your post and also make sure that it is not from a password protected album.
~ Just a reminder that we are a family-friendly site if you are sending others off this site to view photos in an album hosted elsewhere.
~ You can jump in and start the photo challenges at anytime.
~ Again - HAVE FUN!

Oh no.....nothing like putting the pressure on??.....

This challenge really seems to be a hard one....in my head anyway.....SOOOO, you have to start somewhere, right??

This was taken about 15 minutes ago, out in my front yard. I used the street lamp across the street to *attempt* to silhouette the tree. The first one was wild, only cause I didn't place the street lamp light behind the trunk of the tree.....hehehe!! Are you asking, what tree?....YEP, it got lost in the street lamp light.....hehe!! So, after moving everything.....I got this.

Be easy on me.....you gotta start somewhere, right??

ETA:.....it just got done raining....hence the sparkle to everything.

Angie that is a great photograph.

Very beautiful. Thanks for inspiring us all.

Audrey! The next challenge is to shoot from your roof - how fast can you get to it girl?!? JK! Hee heee!

I think it's a wonderful photo and you started right on top!

Oh, I don't know about putting anyone else to shame....unless it might be myself..... ((been there, done that.....many times over the years and it doesn't have to involve photography!!...hehehehe))

I'm really enjoying these challenges, cause its pushing me away from that *auto* mode on my camera!! I only have a Sony point and shoot.....AND, I'm having a blast experimenting with it.....hehe!!

Thanks for the compliment Barbie.....can't wait to see what you come up with for this challenge!!

Oh good, when I seen "shadow".....I went for the shadow of the tree, which happen to be in the grass. OK, I can get my mind going into another direction now....hehehe!!

Thanks for the clarification, Angie!!

ROFL.....don't tempt me.....it takes me less then 5 minutes to get the ladder out.....and another 5 minutes to get to the roof......LOL

Oh, I agree......no more roof climbing for me......I've already fallen off that roof and was LUCKY!! I know the odds are against me now!! I'm a risk taker by nature.....but I'm not stupid.....once was enough for me.....hehehehehe!! Oh, and yes, it was because the roof was wet from washing the outside windows on the 2nd story!! I now have dirty windows on the 2nd story....hehehehe!!

Audrey, I love your tree.
Angie, this challenge is wonderful. I love how you have the silhoutte of your tree to the side. I have been trying to get a silhouette of a windmill that I have to drive by for work. Several times I have tried, but one time there wasn't enough light left another time I had it all perfect and my battery died with no extra battery backup Maybe I can get it this week.
Sazzyfrasst, I love the way your photo looks.I like how you took something ordinary and made it art.

Angie, I love the little birdie. I like how the clouds look behind him. I tried to get the windmill, but it was too windy today. With the spinning, it was very difficult to get a good photo. It was moving too much. I saw this sailboat on the Mississippi river. I really like how it turned out. I hope to try for the windmill again later this week.

Default shadowy silhouettes

You guys rock!!!! your silhouettes are great.......

By the way Ms Aubrey Ann--don't be putting yourself down by saying you only have a point and shoot........One of the things I preach to my young 4-H photographers is " What is between the ears is more important to a great photo than what is in front of the nose" Yes, advanced features and glass can help you but if you don't have the brain power to learn to use it and the imagination to be creative,,,,,,no camera will make you into a "great photographer" Just keep shooting and learning about all those features....I have had my digital SLR for 5 years now and just this summer I found two features that I didn't know it had and wow did they help me.

c-mouse.....you are sooooo right!! I should have never listened to the photographer that showed up from our local newspaper the night of our 50th Anniversary kick-off Celebration at school. She snickered when she said...."You'll never have professional photo's from that point and shoot". Of course, I looked at all her equipment....and took her comment to heart.

BUT.....with all that said.....and with the help of the challenges.....I am determined (now) to learn what my camera has to offer. I've had my camera for about a year now, but everytime I took it out of *auto*.....I ended up with...??? I became frustrated, so I just kept it in auto. With everyone's help here, I've gotten the courage and knowledge to explore the unknown. To all of you, I am very thankful!!

Oh....c-mouse......what new thing did you find on your camera??

Default shadowy

It had both a sharpener (to increase edge contrast) and a color enhancer that I had been totally unaware of.

This is a beautiful sunset taken from our back patio.
Same time, just moved the camera further to the left, what a difference in a few metres!

I only have a point and shoot too and I love it. My husband has a digital SLR Canon EOS and I don't like using his at all.
We both took identical photos while in Hong Kong in January and to tell the truth it is hard telling them apart.
My husband was so impressed with my little ricoh R6, he bought one for himself (I am very possessive of mine ) for when he didn't want to lug his heavyweight bag with multiple lenses around on his shoulder.

Everyone has posted some wonderful pictures! I love them all! I'm still looking for a door to photograph and I've added "shadows" to my list but so far I just haven't seen something that has caught my eye. I'll have to get my DH out this weekend to drive around to see if I can capture something.

Ms Audrey Ann/Marilyn--it is on a menu and has setting choices.....I can increase the color saturation "in-camera" and it does help-------when I think of situations where i could have used it to "help" an image----and the technology in my camera is 5-7 years old....Think of what you gals with newer ones have.....The Compact digital cameras have technology in them that was reserved for SLR's 5 years ago...

Oh by the way---

Point and Shoot ---nothing can be changed on the camera....You literally pick it up and shoot. Fixed focal length(can't be changed), fixed shutter speed(can't be changed) , Fixed aperture ( can't be changed) Built in flash if flash is available.

Compact camera--Focal length can change ( the zoom factor), shutter speed and aperture can be changed, can use full manual, the only thing is,,,,,it has only the lens attached at time of purchase and may or may not have a pop-up flash. Does not have full range of ISO, shutter speeds or aperture found on SLR's but still can use many creative settings.

SLR- everything can change and lens can be changed too. May have pop up flash and most certainly can take a separate flash.

This is a fabulous silhouette/fall photo. I love how you have the tree with the red leaves framed by the silhouette of the other trees.

My favorite quote is "Owning a Canon doesn't make you a photographer, it just makes you a Canon owner". My kids have taken some great pictures with their point & shoots, and I've taken some lousy ones with my SLR. I had to take classes to figure out my camera as I'm too much of a visual person. Reading it doesn't work for me. Those classes have been the best investment in my photography journey. Of course, I do want more lenses...
