Default Photo Challenge #180 ~ Worn and Weathered {07/11/2013}

Photo challenge #180 ~ Worn and Weathered

Sorry, I'm late! I'm definitely feeling worn and weathered from the exceptional heat we've been having this last week. But hopefully the sunscreen will mean that I don't look any older .
My challenge to you this week is to find things that have been worn and weathered, whether by heat, cold, wind, rain...
Coastal erosion is a big problem in places here, so that's another possibility, and I'm sure there are some wonderful eroded rocks in AZ .

Photo Challenge Rules:
~ Have FUN with this! There are no right or wrong photos.
~ Take as many pics as you want, share the few you like best.
~ Please share only current photos, taken after the challenge was issued.
~ We CANNOT upload our photos to the SCS galleries. You may upload them as an attachment or host them from your blog or any online photo hosting site. Just provide the direct link to the photo in your post and also make sure that it is not from a password protected album.
~ Just a reminder that we are a family-friendly site if you are sending others off this site to view photos in an album hosted elsewhere.
~ Please jump in and join us in the photo challenges at any time!
~HAVE FUN

These are just some quick photos taken on the way to work, plus one I took of a statue in the Botanic Gardens on Saturday morning - a bit worn and mossy.

Ah Sabrina, I wish I had read this before I went off on a mini vacation up north last week. I had lots of opportunity to take photos of worn and weathered things in nature. I love your rusted and flaked/weathered paint photos! And Socrates is ancient!

I took these Saturday on what used to be one of my favorite dirt roads. Part of the road goes through an old river bed, the 5th photo are some of the river rocks along the side of the road. I was at Monument Valley back in April and there are LOTS of worn/weathered rocks there.

Audrey, your photos are awesome! Love the old building and the tree roots and the cliffs are beautiful.....showing the red soil. The riverbed stones are cool.....especially the blue ones. And that poor injured saguaro! Those rusty mailboxes look like they could be in the hill country of Texas!

Here are my photos. When we were driving home from the cottage last Saturday, we stopped to photograph the beautiful turquoise waters of the bay, and when I looked behind me, I saw the amazing cliffs of the Niagara Escarpment. I turned to take a picture and found that my battery was dead. However, I managed to find some worn and weathered things close to home.
Our theme this year at the Daily Vacation Bible School was 'Rodeo', so the church was decorated in a cowboy theme. The first three photos were of decorations in the foyer of the church....a wagon wheel, a close up of the old saddle and a lantern. The next three photos were taken in my yard......and old split rail fence, a decorative piece of driftwood in my flowerbed, and the post from the fence that fell down, but I kept the post there as a backdrop to the plants.

Some wonderful photos there! I think my favourite of Audrey's is the barn, and the mailboxes, but the one of the fence is just the sort of shot I take myself. And the eroded river bed is perfect for weathering, just what I was imagining.

I try always to have a spare battery to avoid moments like that, Ina! But one of my DSLR batteries is getting so old it doesn't hold charge very well, and I lost a couple of opportunities when we were in Greece. Beautiful driftwood, I love those gnarled shapes. I love the wheel! We used to have a couple of lanterns like that for use in power cuts - not so rusty looking, mind you .

Wow, I really like everyone's photos! This theme is one I really love. Here are few things I snapped pictures of today. The last photo is of a bowl that I bought at western store in southern Texas. The wood is antique.

Great photos Lynn! Do those rocks have fossils in them? Love the wooden bowl too!

Thanks, Ina!! Not totally sure if there are any fossils in those rocks. I went and took a second look since you asked (they're in our yard) and I didn't see anything but I could have missed something.

The rocks are great! I think my favourite, though, is the fence post with the nails in it. The grey weathered look and the cracks in it are spot on for the challenge.
Do you use the bowl for anything or just for decorative purposes? I've had a couple of lovely wood dishes but since two of then seemed to pick up stains from something over the years, I'm never sure what's safe to put in them.

Thanks so much Sabrina for your remarks. It's great to be back here on this board again!
The bowl you were asking about is actually used for decorative purposes only. I'm not sure if they're safe for food items since they have some type of waxy coat on them. In fact I have two of them but they look different. When my husband and I were at the store I couldn't decided which one I liked best, I thought they were quite unique and loved the way they looked. Well my husband said get them both. Of course I couldn't argue with that logic ~ LOL! Anyway, here is a picture of the other bowl. Both of them have a major crack in them. The first one I posted (in my other post) has leather strapping that the artist put along the crack line to hold it together and this other one has rusty plating down on the bottom (as you can see). The first photo shows what I have in it, a decorative vine. There are also twinkle lights (Christmas type) mixed in with the vine. Looks great especially during the fall and also Christmas season. As you can see by the pictures I tend to be drawn to the warmer colors of fall.

Gosh, the texture on the outside of that second one is amazing - it's almost like a nut shell!
I noticed the leather "stitch" in the first one - it made me think of a spoon I have from Thailand made totally from coconut. But the strapping that held the spoon to the handle has come undone.
I like the way your husband thinks!

Thanks Sabrina! I thought the texture, etc. was awesome too! Like I said, I couldn't make up my mind which bowl I liked the best. Part of the problem was that they were a little on the pricey side which made it even harder to decide. And I too LOVE the way my husband thinks (get both bowls) ~ LOL!!

Also, you ought to take your spoon and see if you can have the strapping fixed on it. I'm sure there would be someone who could do that for you. Maybe a leather shop or a place that fixes shoes?

Have a wonderful week!!

You should be able to save bigger than that - either 600 x 800 or even with 1000 pixels as the larger size works for me when I'm adding photos as attachments. Too small and they won't be big enough to see properly even when we click on the thumbs. I just add as attachments here - I've never worked out how to embed images from my Picasa albums.

There's a fairly up-to-date Master Challenge List stickied at the top with clickable links to each challenge, so do feel free to jump in if you're inspired to take any pictures that will work for older challenges too .

Yes, you are! That lake looks so serene and peaceful. I am just going to check your link. for the lake. For our time at the lake in the summer, we go to a friend's cottage just south of Tobermory on Lake Huron.

Weathered soil - both by lakes which have dried out a bit.
The second one is actually vary variable because it's quite a unique soil structure in the area, and there are many "disappearing lakes" which rise and fall depending on the level of the water table.
The dried earth here was so brown and curved - it made me think of coconut shells (with moss on them).

I guess that is what you call 'old as dirt'! Very cool texture, but not a very healthy looking ground.
