Default Photo Challenge #174 ~ Things to See, Places to Go {04/04/2013}

I'm sorry - I didn't forget the challenge.
I forgot to put a memory card in my camera and all the photos I "took" yesterday didn't take. Who knows if tomorrow will be the same gorgeous blue sky and sun!
Anyway, I was thinking of seeing our home-towns (villages, cities, whatever) through the eyes of a tourist. What are the sights you bring visitors to see, what activities do you do with a visitor that you probably wouldn't do just on your own?

Since I don't have any pictures from yesterday, here are two from last week.

Sometimes we have training in the Guinness Storehouse and we usually have a Christmas lunch there. It's a fascinating building to wander around - and one of these years when we have a suitable tourist to take around , I'll actually do the proper tour!

Editing the one of the Wicklow Tours reminds me of years ago when we brought two African friends on a trip down to Glendalough. Although one of them had been living here for at least 5 years, it was the first time he'd been out of the city. And as we left county Dublin and moved into Wicklow, driving over the mountains, we started to come across sheep on the hillside. Those guys were so excited to see "les moutons"!

Photo Challenge Rules:
~ Have FUN with this! There are no right or wrong photos.
~ Take as many pics as you want, share the few you like best.

That bison's coat is amazing, all the texture in it! Love the windmill, too - we don't have any like that here.
Wish I could take you up on your offer!

Lots of places in our area to take tourists to also, but the weather has been very inclement the past few days, and I have just started driving again this week, so I am going slowly. As soon as the sun starts shining and it stops freezing rain, I will get out to take some pictures!
Pansy, I love your windmill photo with the beautiful sky and clouds. That bison is cool too!

Well, it's almost time for a new challenge and I am just getting around to taking photos for Sabrina's last challenge. I've just started driving again after my injury, and then last weekend we had horrific ice storms that caused slippery roads and power outages, so I didn't get out to take pictures. But today, it's sunny and 15 C. degrees. We live in a wonderful area of the country.......just on the edge of Mennonite country where folks still ride in horse and buggy and in a small community that comprises two villages that were established along the river that runs through a limestone gorge. Lots of touristy areas We even boast of having the last remaining covered bridge in our province. It is about a 20 minute drive from my place and in a little place called West Montrose. It has been closed to vehicular traffic all winter for repairs, but is now open again. First photo is of the bridge, the second of the sign beside the bridge. The next pictures are taken in Elora, a village that is 5 km. from our little town and also on the Grand River as our town is. Third and fourth photos are of a sign at the edge of the limestone gorge. Sorry that the third photo is sideways. I edited it on my computer, but it still shows on it's side here on splitcoast. Fifth picture is into the gorge and you can see how deep it is by the person climbing in a red shirt.

My little town (12,000 inhabitants) is called Fergus because it was settled by two Scottish gentlemen and named after a place back home. The first photo is of a sign depicting some events in our town during the year. This past weekend was the weekend of the Tartan, but I did not attend any of the events, as I was dealing with the lack of electricity at home and keeping my sump pump going, so my basement would not be flooded. We have a very successful Scottish Games weekend in August every year too.
The limestone rocks also line the banks of the Grand River as it runs through Fergus. the next picture is of the river as it flows through town. Shot number three is of a stone arbor at the river's edge. Many couples have wedding photos taken there. I have posted a photo of it before, but from a different angle. Last picture is of Elora (5 km. from out town) the building is the Elora Mill, an inn and restaurant which has been under renovations for the last year. therefore, I could not get to the best place to take a photo of the little island in the river which is called 'The tooth of time'. Because of the power of the water as it flows through ever spring, the limestone has been eroding, so this little scenic island has been shored up several times with cement.

You must be glad to be back driving again, Ina!
Snap on sunshine and 15C - yesterday and today here - so I hope to retake a couple of photos this morning on the way to work.
Those covered bridges amaze me - we have nothing remotely like them here. The gorge looks amazing - I don't think I'd want to get too close to the edge of that.
Lovely to see some of the town history, too. I remember your earlier photo of the arbour.

Other than the cultural places (which I have no photos) I would take visitors to the Phoenix Botanical Garden, Los Cedros, Monument Valley (if I had the money) and other places. The first photo is a white peacock butterfly taken during the Botanical Garden's butterfly exhibit. The next four photos is Los Cedros a horse stable with Moorish architecture. Not only are horses boarded there they are also trained for competition. The stables are air-conditioned and ceiling fans above each stall. The place is absolutely unbelievable and I couldn't even fathom how much it costs to board horses there. The last photo I took at Monument Valley last month.
