Default Photo Challenge 165 ~ Street Furniture {11/13/12}

This is a challenge I've been thinking of for quite some time. When I took a detour one day last week to take a photo of the little Viking, I decided now was the time to go for it. The definition is so broad that I am sure everybody can find something for this.

Wikipedia says: Street furniture is a collective term (used mainly in the United Kingdom) for objects and pieces of equipment installed on streets and roads for various purposes. It includes benches, traffic barriers, bollards, post boxes, phone boxes, street lamps, traffic lights, traffic signs, bus stops, tram stops, taxi stands, public lavatories, fountains, watering troughs, memorials, public sculptures, and waste receptacles. An important consideration in the design of street furniture is how it affects road safety.

I have a couple of photos in mind if I go in to town after work one day this week, but here are a few to start off with. When I posted a couple of the vinyl covers on electricity boxes (I don't know what the correct term is!) on my blog, someone mentioned having seen them in her area too, so maybe it's a current trend. Some of the ones I've seen here are relevant to their locations - for instance, the book one is at the site of the first public lending library, and the Viking is outside Christchurch Cathedral, near to where there is a big Viking/early mediaeval exhibition. I've also added a street sign and street lighting. I meant to take a snap of a parking meter too after work, but we finished a bit late and I just went straight for the bus.

Photo Challenge Rules:
~ Have FUN with this! There are no right or wrong photos.
~ Take as many pics as you want, share the few you like best.

Sabrina, I'm so glad you included a list! I see you have several photos here that could also fit the graffiti challenge! I'll have to get busy looking for things to shoot. I love those street lights...so elegant!

The list - yes, it's almost an anything goes. Ones I have in mind are a couple of the street sculptures in town, and there's an old public water fountain near work...

I thought so at first with the graffiti style one, but as far as I know they're printed vinyl decals. And I'd actually taken that one before your challenge , I've been collecting them! When the book one first went up it was quite blank and there was a note to fill in your own book titles. I might even have an earlier photo of it before it was all filled up.

I have a dream project of photographing some of the different street lights around here.

Another one of those electricity box covers.
Street sculpture
Mail boxes. The big square one is for local businesses doing franked mail, you have to have a key.
Lifebelt on lamp post.

My favourite haberdashery shop used to be behind the bench sculpture. It's moved, which I didn't know till today. So rather than backtrack I went on to another knitting shop which also turned out to have moved. At least I got some photos out of my walk into town!

Well, finally I have a chance to post some photos. I've been busy with my two young grandsons this past couple of weeks.
1. the new Canadian post boxes....it didn't take long for people to add graffiti
3. A menu board of a restaurant we wanted to go to. (new ownership, changed menu, so we left after looking at the paper menu
2. The menu board of the restaurant we actually ate at. Awesome food!
4. A bicycle stand complete with bicycle.

Wow - it's amazing how much basic things can vary from one country to another. I like the garbage container and cycle stand -and your new mail boxes! In the first planter one, I can even see how different your traffic lights are to ours, which are mostly mounted on poles, and are black rather than yellow.
Horse ragu as in horse meat? And is the last thing on that menu board the same as the little Polish dumpling things?

I'm not sure about the horse ragu...........we ended up not eating there as there wasn't much on the menu that my daughter was interested in. She's vegetarian. Yes, the perogies are like the Polish dumpling things.

These were all taken in Mesa, a suburb of Phoenix, at least that's what I call it.

A great collection there! I like the last one (boy and dog) best of all, but I also liked the first one a lot, the girl with the baseball ? bat. And the shoe one is really quirky and fun.
