Default Photo Challenge #151~'The Power of Nature' {March 6, 2012}

Photo challenge #151, 'The Power of Nature'. We were reminded again this past week, just how powerful the forces of nature are, when tornadoes and storms raged across parts of Indiana, Iowa, and Tennesse killing 39 people. Even as far away as here in Ontario, we got high winds and rain. It brought my mind back to 2005 when a tornado swept through this area, not even 1/2 mile from my house. No one was killed in that storm, but there was lots and lots of damage, and many trees uprooted.
For this challenge, you can go back in your archives and show photos you took in the past, as I am certainly not hoping for any storms or other powers of nature this week.

Photo Challenge Rules:
~ Have FUN with this! There are no right or wrong photos.
~ Take as many pics as you want, share the few you like best.
~ Please share only current photos, taken after the challenge was issued.
~ We CANNOT upload our photos to the SCS galleries. You may upload them as an attachment or host them from your blog or any online photo hosting site. Just provide the direct link to the photo in your post and also make sure that it is not from a password protected album.
~ Just a reminder that we are a family-friendly site if you are sending others off this site to view photos in an album hosted elsewhere.
~ Please jump in and join us in the photo challenges at anytime!

My pictures were taken this afternoon of an area that used to be a forest of mature trees, before the 2005 tornado. It still hasn't been cleaned up, but I suppose it would cost a lot to do so, when the land isn't able to earn it back.

It is amazing what devastation nature can cause! I know I have a photo of a tree that blew down on the green behind us last year - but if workmen still repairing the river embankments 4 months after our bad floods counts, I can snag a photo of them this morning. Those floods were very photogenic but I'm afraid I just stayed safely in the house.
I grew up by the sea, and it was amazing how a big winter storm could totally change the beach.

I'll have to see if I still have photos of my cactus that fell over from high winds but I do have some pictures of storms at the Grand Canyon. I've never been able to photograph any of the sand/dust storms we get during the summer.

I found pictures of my poor cactus that had big chunks toppled by strong winds several years ago. I was told that all those pads weighed over two tons. Fortunately for me it didn't fall on my neighbor's porch or damage his television antenna dish. A year later more chunks blew over and sadly, I got rid of the cactus.

2 tons!! Wow, I had no idea they would be that heavy. I've seen that sort of size in Greece - I'll treat them with more respect from now on. I'm glad you found those photos.

Wow! That is a lot of weight...it must have been in the rainy season? It just missed that antenna dish by millimeters! How long does it take to grow one that big?

A couple of photos from my archives.....first one, the awesome power of water (Niagara Falls), as you can see, the boat takes a long time to get close to the falls, the second one shows how far the rock has been eroded over the years by the power of the water....I believe the sign says that the place where my grandson is standing was where the falls actually was in 1941.

Ina, that cactus was probably about six years old or so. I used to trim it but then got lazy and fell over before I got around to having someone trim it. Actually, it did fall on that dish but fortunately didn't cause any damage. That type of prickly pear, know as a fig prickly pear, grows pretty fast. During the summer we get some pretty strong winds during what has been labeled monsoon season. Apparently a weatherman who had been transferred to Arizona from the mid-west or someplace30 or 40 years ago was bored because of our weather and one day when it began raining he decided to call it a monsoon.

I like your Niagara photo. I remember going on the Maiden of the Mist (?) when I was about 14.

That first photo is fantastic - I love the way you get rainbows by big waterfalls. And the blue-green colour of the water is beautiful.

OK, this is a bit of a stretch, but it is the aftermath of the power of nature.
We had huge floods late last year - can't remember if it was October or November. They were heavy enough that the road and path beside the river Liffey in town were damaged along a short stretch - you could see where the whole footpath had buckled. I haven't been able to walk on that side of the river ever since - I'll be so glad when it's open again.
The other day I saw one of the workmen climbing into the storm drain.

Ironically, the Civil Defence compound is just along this stretch - and none of the volunteers could get there during the peak of the flooding.

The first tree was brought down by wind, the second by snow.

I especially like that first photo. You could also put it in the men at work challenge and reflection challenge.

Even to me the second two are pretty lame, I just wanted to find something for this challenge. I did actually title the first one Men at Work - but again, trying to find something for this one . A photo of the buckled sidewalk and road would have been even better, but they had the whole sidewalk fenced off right after the flood, and it's on a main road into town so even before they started work I couldn't really walk along the road outside the fencing.

Your photos are not lame at all, and fully fit the category! It sure is amazing to see the power of wind and water. I hope your path opens up again soon!

Hey all! Hope you still remember me!! lol This was taken back when Hurricane Ike happened and we got the winds way up in Ohio! The story goes as this: The guy that lives in that white house had just walked past his tree when it fell over! I didn't see it fall but saw the neighbor kid across from us get up and run like there was a fire as he saw it fall but didn't see the guy and feared it had fallen on top of him. We all ran outside to see that huge tree laying on the ground right in between the house and neighbor's garage! Now we give him a hard time about just walking past trees and they fall down.

Amber, great to see you back here! That tree sure went down close to the house! The devastation from tornadoes can be so bad! It's good that you can have a joke about it now, but it must have been scary.

Gosh, that was close to the guy's house - scary!
We once had one fall on our garage enough to shift it on the foundation and totally block the driveway - just as well my dad had decided to move one of the cars out the night before.
