Default Photo Challenge #136 ~ Follow the Rule {07/26/2011}

The rule of thirds is a compositional rule of thumb in visual arts such as painting, photography and design. The rule states that an image should be imagined as divided into nine equal parts by two equally-spaced horizontal lines and two equally-spaced vertical lines, and that important compositional elements should be placed along these lines or their intersections. Proponents of the technique claim that aligning a subject with these points creates more tension, energy and interest in the composition than simply centering the subject would.

I guess this is something that we often do automatically, but not always, since auto-focus pushes us to the centre unless we've changed the pre-set. For some reason I use the bottom third intersections way more than the top ones - I only realised that when I was looking through the photos I'd taken for this challenge. Except in portrait mode, when I tend to use the top.
Anyway, your subject theme can be whatever you wish, just try to consciously compose your photos using the rule of thirds - or the Golden Mean if you can understand it!

I know that I'd taken several photos of the sculpture outside the local civic offices, but it wasn't till I took this one last week that I ended up with one I was happy with .

Photo Challenge Rules:
~ Have FUN with this! There are no right or wrong photos.
~ Take as many pics as you want, share the few you like best.
~ Please share only current photos, taken after the challenge was issued.
~ We CANNOT upload our photos to the SCS galleries. You may upload them as an attachment or host them from your blog or any online photo hosting site. Just provide the direct link to the photo in your post and also make sure that it is not from a password protected album.
~ Just a reminder that we are a family-friendly site if you are sending others off this site to view photos in an album hosted elsewhere.
~ You can jump in and start any of the photo challenges at anytime..
~ Again - HAVE FUN

Amber, the rules were designed for people who don't have a photographic eye. I've never really thought about it either, but a lot of my photos end up following the rule.
Great photos Sabrina....my eye immediately went to the third photo too, but I also really like the first one.
I went out this afternoon to get a shot of the neighbour's farm. Then, this evening my friend and I took a walk along the dam. The sunset was not spectacular, but there was a bit of lovely color anyway. The second and third photos are out of order. I was just checking some photos I had taken, when we spotted a blue heron. By the time I got my camera in 'shoot' mode, he was already a distance away, but I did catch him in photo 3. Then we sat on the rocks waiting for him to go fishing (photo 2). We never did see him again. Next picture is of the lake and last one of the dam.

I'd rate that as a worthwhile sunset! It's hard to decide whether I like the dam or the lake photo better - I rather like all the manmade stuff in the dam photo. I think my favourite of all is the feet one, though . How lucky to have all that as a nearby walk.

Yes, I am truly blessed to be living out in the county side, but in a small subdivision of 20 houses. I live 3 houses away from the lake, a 5 minute walk to the golf course (I don't golf) and a 20 minute walk to the dam on the lake. I used to have a canoe and the kids and I would go out on the lake regularly. But now the kids are all grown and away, I have sold my canoe, as it was too heavy for me to carry to the water by myself. Also, I have new neighbours that have water frontage and they are not as friendly as the last ones, so it's a bit harder to access the lake. I am thinking of getting a kayak though. It is so peaceful here....I have neighbours close, but also the quiet of the country, so it's a winning situation all around!

So I went out and took pictures of my butterfly bush that is blooming. I set my camera to show the lines and this is what I got.

Love the one of the butterfly where it looks like he is staring at me. The yellow flower picture is one I took yesterday before I read the challenge but eye balling it.. looks like it works for the challenge.. you tell me! lol

I like both those ones with yellow flowers, I LOVE the boat one.
I'm intrigued by the butterfly bush - the leaves look what I'd expect for a buddleia, but the flower heads seem to be smaller and less compact. It must be a different variety to the one that grows wild all over here.

I went out yesterday to see if anymore had bloomed. Expecting it to be all purple (have never had a butterfly bush before) and here is a white flower blooming!! Hoping for a few more blooms before I take a complete picture of the bush.

They look to me as if you'd succeeded. The white flower is pretty, but the echinacea has to be my favourite.
I was in the park on Wednesday - they'd been mowing the meadows now that the young fawns have grown a bit.

I just discovered this challenge thread -- thanks for having it in your siggy, Sabrina!

I don't yet have a photo to share but I did intentionally follow the rule of thirds here in this card....

Lela, that's such a lovely card! I love the paper piecing and the cute clothes pins! Even though it's a photo of a card, it's still a photo.
Hope to see more photos from you, now that you know where we are!

Welcome along, Lela.
, I remember once taking a photo of my computer screen with the current challenge showing in the gallery because I couldn't come up with anything suitable.

Lela, photo challenges are now bi-weekly, so the next one will be posted next week Tuesday. It will be an easy one, focusing on a common subject.

I went for a drive last evening and ended up at a lake about 1/2 hour away from here. Now the amazing thing is that I have lived here for almost 40 years and had never been to Lake Conestogo! Here are a few of the photos I took there, trying to follow the rule.

What a lovely discovery!! And what great photos, too, Ina. I think I like the first best because of that glorious evening light, but the punch of colour in the third one is great, and the tranquil sundown in the second one.

That moon one is way, way cool - I love it!
It would be perfect for what I have in mind for next week's challenge.

On Friday evening a group of us from work went out for a photography night. We returned to Lake Conestogo where I had been a couple of weeks ago. Here are a few shots.

I'd find it hard to say whether the first or second was my favourite - they're both so atmospheric. I don't know what it is -ever since I went digital I've struggled with sunsets. The third one is a great shot too, very graphic.

The first two were taken at Little Painted Desert. Unfortunately the light wasn't the best. I had planned to stay for better light and a sunset but all of a sudden it became extremely windy and I wasn't about ready to set up my tripod; it was all I could do to keep my balance. The second photo was taken north of Flagstaff on my round about way home from Winslow.

Oh wow - what's the animal in the third one? It looks a bit like a lemur?
I really like the way the second one draws your eye in and down the path; that weathered fence pole really anchors it.

Ah - I should have been able to work that out because I had to look up some images once when I was trying to colour a stamped image. Thanks for letting me know.
