Here are a few shots of a hummingbird that frequents one of our feeders. I went out and stood about 10 or 12 feet from the feeder and just waited for her to show up.

Cool hummingbird pictures but I hate to tell you that putting red coloring in their sugar water softens their little beaks and they end up dying.

Thanks - the red colouring is natural - it's from a bird store - no dye. I use just a touch of it in the regular sugar water just so we can see when it goes down easier. They said it was safe!!!

We noticed a month or so back this big bird flying to the creek that is right at the edge of our property. We keep seeing it fly over the house or the field. Well yesterday when i went to do dishes, I look out my kitchen window and about have a heart attack... there is the heron STANDING in my fenced in back yard!! I ran to get my camera and tried to get a good picture without going outside. (luckly the dog was asleep or I never would have gotten a pictue!)

Amber, is it a blue heron? We have them around here, but I've never managed to get close enough to them with my camera(I don't have a big lens!).

It looks like a grey to me, but only because it looks so like the ones we have here. In your garden - oh my.
It reminds me that when my sister and BIL dug a pond in their garden, they decided not to waste money on stocking it with fish as they were directly under a heron's flight path. Somebody down in the south west here rescued a fledgeling last year and reared it - he has some great photos. It still comes back to them for snacks .

Ina - Have no clue if it's a Blue or Grey Heron. I tried to get outside so I could get a clearer picture but it flew away when I got close to the fence.. couldn't see me but i musta made some kind of nosie to scare it away. I was afraid my pictures were gonna be blury since I was taking them through the window and was shaking as i was so shocked to see it in our yard! lol

It still strikes me so wierd that we even have them as all we have around us is a creek in our backyard and another about half mile up the road. There are no big lakes or marshes around us.

Well, the great blue herons are more gray in color than blue, so I'm choosing to think it may be a blue. I didn't know there was such a thing as a gray heron. I do see the white ones in Texas, but have never seen a gray heron.

I just checked wikipedia and it says the grays are found in Asia, Africa, and Europe, including Ireland (where they are often called cranes) It's possible yours was a gray, but highly unlikely, so it's probably a blue.

I've never heard anybody call them a crane - to me cranes don't exist in Ireland at all, outside of zoos. I think wikipedia is demeaning our intelligence with that statement .
I'm starting to think that I need to order a good American bird book - I've been checking them on Amazon .

Your are right Sabrina. Internet information often leaves much to be desired, yet a lot of people depend on it, especially in regards to their health. We often see patients in our emergency department who have already diagnosed themselves because of internet information (and need I say, scared themselves).

We're lucky enough to have a few mandarin ducks in the park nearby at the moment.
They are soooo photogenic, it's hard to stop taking pictures .
There's a wood duck with them, too, and I took these gulls at the same lake. I think they're probably winter migrants because there aren't normally gulls there, and we do get wintering black-headed gulls as well as our native population.

These are the most beautiful ducks I have seen in a long time. The photos are great too. Love the gulls on the branch not where you expect them to be.!!! Great photography.

More mandarins - I'm going to have a terrible time thinning out my November photos at the end of the month...
Much easier to get a good photo of the American Wood Duck once he came out on to the shore.

There's a short video of mandarins on my blog .

Sabrina, these are just amazing! Could you not sell some of these photos? They are just so beautiful and detailed. There are on-line stock photo sites that will buy photos like this.

Seems I never got round to adding a goldfinch to my birds here.
In our last house we had a lot - this is the first year they've been regular visitors here, and even that isn't on a daily basis. Weeks can go by without seeing any evidence of feeding at the nyger seeds, and then one day it can be littered with empty husks as the birds have been snacking away. They're always a delight to see with their bright colours, creamy caramel browns and the black and white effect from the back.

Sabrina, the second photo is amazing......so much detail, complete with water drops on the bottom of the feeder. I love the side view of the finch, as it shows all the colors!

Redpolls in the garden.
Two mallard drakes, one with a very threadbare chest. Don't know if they'd been fighting - the one with the plucked breast appeared to be the more dominant of the two.

I have a few photos from a walk over to my uncle and aunt.
I'd just missed a train when I walked back down to come home, so I had time for a short walk along the pier. These two gulls were drinking from a puddle on the pier.
The blackbird is just one I saw when I walked down to the butcher yesterday morning.

We're in the midst of a cold snap. I saw these geese on my road and had to stop. I got a kick out them. 100_0431.jpg

Oh wow - fab!!! Thank so much for sharing. I've only ever seen the lakes here partially freeze, but I do love the sight of ducks and geese standing on the ice.
