Default Photo Challenge #124 ~ Stairway to Heaven {04/26/2011}

Once again the weather didn't cooperate with what I had in mind - it was raining this morning. But coupled with a photo I took at the weekend and one from the archives, and some I took from a sheltered position this morning, we have a plan.

Anything that takes us up is in - ladders or even elevators are just as good as stairs. Next time I'm in town I'll try to grab a couple of elevator shots - the one in the building I work in isn't up to much.

Photo Challenge Rules:
~ Have FUN with this! There are no right or wrong photos.
~ Take as many pics as you want, share the few you like best.
~ Please share only current photos, taken after the challenge was issued.
~ We CANNOT upload our photos to the SCS galleries. You may upload them as an attachment or host them from your blog or any online photo hosting site. Just provide the direct link to the photo in your post and also make sure that it is not from a password protected album.
~ Just a reminder that we are a family-friendly site if you are sending others off this site to view photos in an album hosted elsewhere.
~ You can jump in and start any of the photo challenges at anytime..
~ Again - HAVE FUN

This first one is from the archives - a folk museum in Corfu. I love seeing how worn old steps can be.

Second one is from the weekend, steps up to the main parkland from a little lake in a glen.

Third one is the steps at the end of a tunnel in work. Our end you just walk straight in, but the site on the other side of the road is quite a bit higher up.

OK - so I've added a second photo from Corfu - it's the one I originally went looking for there. This is in the harbour in Corfu town.

And a few more from work this morning - one decorative and one functional spiral staircase.

oh cool shots I could not get the green grassy? stairs shot to open though. ( will try again later on the laptop.)

I have a made a print out of the master list of challenges and am jotting down notes along side of them as ideas of things to try. ( some of these are a few years old ) so, as i do these do you guys want to see them?

mostly been playing with an macro lens lately. tried turning off the anti shake since it was mostly on a tripod but, that did not always get a crisp shot so thinking it would be nice to be able to upload them and pick your brains...

Oh yes - please do share photos for old challenges. I try to look at threads with recent postings. I've thought of printing the master list, because I know I flaked on some of the challenges when they were posted .
Are you trying either a remote release or a shutter delay with the macro shots? If time isn't critical I always use the timer - and then panic because I forget to re-set it and wonder why nothing is happening next time I take a photo.

Sabrina, I love the spiral stairs (actually I love all your stair photos) in the fourth and fifth pictures. The ornateness (is that a word?) reminds me of New Orleans.

Stacy, please do submit to the older challenges. I'm always meaning to make a list but keep forgetting, terrible to be old and decrepit!

I have some photos of escalators that I took thirty years ago when I was in Scotland and London. Those things were scary!!

Yeah, I don't like escalators. Especially when they're broken and you have to walk down them - that makes me so dizzy I have to close my eyes. If there's a choice between stairs and escalators OR elevators, give me the stairs any day. Even in the Underground, LOL. Elevators in a shaft aren't so bad, and I love the look of the old-fashioned ones where you still have to pull the grill across, but the modern glass ones in a lot of places make me feel sick.

I haven't been on-line for a couple of days and when I saw the challenge title, I got a fright! I do want to go to heaven someday....but I'm not ready yet!
Sabrina, I love all your photos...the old stars in Corfu as so picturesque! If you do photo cards at all, it would make a perfect one! Well, I'm off to find my camera.....put it down somewhere and can't find it!
Stacy, I'd love to see your submissions for old challenges.

I took this in work yesterday.
Technically I suppose a fire-escape is not really stairs up, mind you!

I'm sure that fire escape is used to go up as well as down! Good shot.
I finally got out while it wasn't raining and managed to do some photography. There is a garden in the center of our town that was started by a newspaper magnate (for that day!) Hugh Templin, in the early 1900's. It fell into disrepair and for many years was considered to be a ruin. When my children were young, we used to bring our lunch there and enjoy looking at the river. In recent years it has been revived and people come to have their wedding photos taken in the arch and also in the gardens above. It is now called Templin Gardens. However, when it is wet, the steps are still quite slippery, so I had to wait for a dry day. First photo was taken from near the river at the bottom (there were fishermen at the river, so I couldn't get right down there) and the second photo is around the bend and near the top of the stairs.

That looks like a wonderful place to wander round - very photogenic! I like contrast in colours between the mellow warmth in the first one and the colder greys in the second, and how worn and weathered it all looks.
I'm thinking we could do with some of your rain! I don't expect to be having to water all my pot plants as early as April.

I can certainly see why wedding photos are taken at those stairs, cool.

This is one of the stairways at La Posada Hotel in Winslow. It's the last of the Fred Harvey Hotels.

What a fabulous interior. It's a bygone era, those hotels that served railways, isn't it? We had a few here, although not geared towards freight at all, as far as I know.

Yes, it's an era long gone. Amtrack goes through Winslow twice a day, once in the morning going east and then once in the evening going west. I guess rarely does anyone get on or off at Winslow.
