Default Photo challenge #123 {04/20/11} 'Then and Now'

Photo challenge #123 ...'Then and Now'. Nothing like being a day and a half late for the challenge! This week, RIM (Research in Motion) brought out it's new playbook to go along with the Blackberry. The head office of RIM is only 30 miles from here. Our local radio station had a retrospective of the company this week, entitling it 'Then and Now' going back to 1984 when Mike Lasaridis dropped out of university in his last year to start his business. I thought this would be a good photo challenge for us. Lets look at 'then and now' in our lives. For this one, I want you to go back in your archives for the first photo, but the 'now' photo should be current, taken this week. Ideas....weight loss (or gain, as in my photos), house renovations, changes in landscape, etc. My first picture was taken circa 1971 on vacation, when I weighed about 103 pounds. The second one taken an hour ago......50 pounds heavier!

Here's another photo set. First one was taken in March of last year. This week, the bulldozers were in to get rid of the old building and trees. It's still a mess, but I suspect this will become a farmer's field for crops.

Here are my before and after. The first photo is the before that was taken with a Minolta 202 using Kodacolor sometime in the 80s. The after picture I took this afternoon. I specifically wanted to try and get another photo (I must have been psychic or something) but forgot to look at the old one before leaving this morning. It looks as though maybe I didn't go high enough on the trail.

Audrey, those photos are both beautiful~! I love the purple look on the old photo, and the lovely clear colors of the second. You certainly live in a beautiful part of the country!

This sounds like a fun challenge. I think I have a picture of a pond in the park frozen over in December, I have to review today's photos to see if I have a similar one.

That old photo of Roosevelt Lake - obviously not the foreground, LOL, but the background mountain could easily be in Ireland.

Waah - I walked down the canal and just when I got to where the boats were it started raining quite heavily. So I just had to grab a picture and get back under the bridge for shelter.
First picture was last December - our second big snow.

Ask DH about the dandelions!! He says he's never seen them so bad; I just think he's never noticed before.

This is going to be cool!! A neighbor just stopped by our place with a picture he'd found in his attic - from 1957! It was taken as they're building our silo, and his Dad, now passed on, is one of the workers. So it was really awesome of him to share that memory with us - and it was neat to see what our place looked like 54 years ago!

Fun challenge. I had to think on it though as I wasn't sure what pictures I had back then that I could "reshow" now. Then it hit me when I was downloading Easter pictures from yesterday!

First picture is of my kids in '06 when little one was only 2 months old. Love this picture cause of how Benjamin is acting. He was all upset about being the only boy in the picture and I think there was some issue of him matching his oldest sister too (I made all the outfits then). Fast forward to 2010 where he is a little better at being the only boy (even if he wouldn't smile) and of course little one is hamming it up for the camera. My now picture was taken yesterday (Easter morn) and just look at that cheesy grin from Benjamin! lol (I just looked at them and I can't believe how much little one has grown in only a year... her hair is so much longer and more of it! wow) Yes, I'm missing the oldest but at 15, she was still getting ready and we couldn't wait for her to take pictures!!

There's a real family resemblance there - and wow, the difference a few years makes!

I had a sudden thought of a then photo - and when I went to look I thought maybe I'd ditched it when I did a massive re-organisation of photos but I found it, and another one.
We had an old Renault 5 somebody gave us when we first got married, but it died quite quickly and we couldn't afford to replace it, so for a while we didn't have anything.
Then DH got a job as a courier - the van picture. He reckons it was worse than being unemployed - horrendous hours, and back then no mobile phones to help you find people living in remote country areas. Tracking the change in cameras, this would have been my Minolta range-finder, or a very old point-and-shoot.
Then he got a better job, and for ten years we had company cars, changed every three years, with nothing to do but keep them clean, all services were paid for by the company. I'd have to say this Escort was the least favourite of the four cars we had. Camera would have been my Olympus IS2000.
Now we have an old banger - the age of the second-last company car. But it gets us from A-B, and although it's over the 100,000 miles now it passed it's last roadworthy test with flying colours.
But DH also has motorbikes now . He did have when I first met him when we were both in our late teens, but certainly not by the time we were dating. It was only about 5 years ago that he got back into them again. Here he's busy servicing it himself and learning on the go.

Amber, wonderful photos of your kids. So lovely to see them grow up, and it's super to seeing the progression in pictures! Love your comment about the 15 year old.......isn't that the truth! I do have progression photos of my grandchildren too, but the last time I took a photo was in February, so that wouldn't be current.
Sabrina, great shots of your progression of vehicles. What kind of bike is that? My ex used to have motorcycles, fist a Ducati and then a Honda Silver Wing. And I dated a man who had a Gold Wing.....how I loved riding on the back in the summertime!

That one's a Ducati, Ina. He loves his Ducati . He had a Honda Deauville before which was more comfortable for me, but I don't think he'll ever change back.

I took a now photo this morning, and then it took me about two hours to find the then photo - I knew it had to be there somewhere.
You can see better in the then photo, it's a little Where's Wally painted at the bottom of the door frame of an empty house. That was August '09, and the red was eye-catching. Now I don't think you'd see it if you weren't looking - his jeans are just as blue but all the red is faded out totally.

After having a mojo-less fortnight, I started to get back into the groove of things a day or so ago. The photo I have attached is my hydrangea. The plant has special meaning because my SIL gave me a bunch of hydrangeas for my birthday 18 months ago and once the flowers were 'done', I put the stems into a pot to see if I could strike some cuttings and then all took! Yay!

In springtime here in Australia last September, I took a photo of the gorgeous pink flowers - I have not enhanced the colour - the colour is exactly what it looked like. And now that it is autumn (Fall) here where I live, the flowers have dried on the plant and taken on a beautiful hue. I stitched the photos together so you can see the difference in one viewing. Hope you like it

We get those pink ones here too . They're not a flower I am overfond of, I have to admit that I probably prefer the second shot. How satisfying that they all rooted for you.

Sabrina, your photo sure showed the passage of time, and Jocelyn, I love hydrangeas, but they don't grow very well here in the gardens, and I just don't have any more room for house plants. I don't have any window sills and have my side table filled with plants!

Funny how lots of people don't like them and consider them very old-fashioned and 'old ladies' flowers. I guess because we have had a 10 year drought which only recently broke, having something that actually grew and flowered was a miracle in itself as we have had severe water restrictions. We have been so excited about our green grass rather than the dust-bowl we have been used to in our backyard. I don't think I'll ever take green grass for granted ever again! Our garden seems so lush and tropical now compared to dead and dying trees and shrubs - which is why I have been out with my camera rejoicing in all the flowers and green-ness!

I took these back in June when we were staying in my aunt's cottage.
Still busy whittling down my 1300+ photos from June (help!!), so I edited a couple last night as a change from deciding which ones to delete.
The then is obviously a photo of a photo. I'd say from the seventies, but I can't remember exactly when my aunt moved there. We knew the people who lived there before her, so I'd always known the cottage.
Thatch was expensive to maintain and expensive to insure, so at some stage she had the roof slated - and then more recently put in skylights. A great addition - with those thick walls and small windows it was quite dark and gloomy inside.
See how the garden changed, too!!
Somewhere I have a couple of photos of when the work was being done on the roof, but it would take a while to find them.

Fantastic Sabrina! I love your 'photo of a photo'.....love the old thatched roof. Although it is very photogenic, I can imagine it would be hard to keep up and maybe even harbor birds nests and other insects. Love the solarium!
