Default Photo challenge #121 -Show your colors {April 6, 2011}

Photo challenge #121 Show your colors (flags, that is) Fortunately, I prepared for this challenge last week, as I was unwell yesterday and did not get on-line. Sorry for posting this challenge so late. Lets see your flags.....national, regional, state, province, even a business that is based in your area. Since we have at least 3 countries participating in these challenges, I thought it would be interesting to see each other's flags. I remember a few years back my friend's daughter who was only 5 at the time, was able to identify the flags of all the major countries in the world. There were at least 100 of them.......I still think that is an amazing feat!

Photo Challenge Rules:
~ Have FUN with this! There are no right or wrong photos.
~ Take as many pics as you want, share the few you like best.
~ Please share only current photos, taken after the challenge was issued.
~ We CANNOT upload our photos to the SCS galleries. You may upload them as an attachment or host them from your blog or any online photo hosting site. Just provide the direct link to the photo in your post and also make sure that it is not from a password protected album.
~ Just a reminder that we are a family-friendly site if you are sending others off this site to view photos in an album hosted elsewhere.
~ You can jump in and start any of the photo challenges at anytime..
~ Again - HAVE FUN
My photos....the Canadian flag, the Ontario provincial flag, and the orange on is the flag of Home Hardware, a Canadian only business that has it's main offices and factory in St. Jacobs, which is about 25 miles from here.

Jeepers, you don't see flags flying a lot here. I took a couple of photos of some that were up in town for Chinese New Year, and then they replaced them with the tricolour for St. Patrick's Day, but they're down now too. I don't think I'll find any locally, but I'll keep an eye out, and if all else fails I'll be in town next week meeting my sister.
Hope you're feeling better now, Ina. I always liked the Canadian flag - my mother lived there for quite a number of years after she left France, and her first husband (and my half-brother and sister) was Canadian, so I was always familiar with that one.

Perhaps some of your municipal or government buildings may have a flag flying.
It's funny.......I had been going to Texas for a number of years before my daughter was able to come with me. One of the first observations she made was......"Americans are really patriotic....look at all the flags!" I hadn't really noticed.
Then when my grandson, who was 10 at the time, came for a visit to Canada with me, he said, "Wow! You have a lot of flags here!"
I think it's something we take for granted and don't really notice until we look for it!

I know if I go down to the President's residence there'll probably be one there. It's not a part of the park we normally walk in . But I really don't think there are as many here as in other places - there are far more in Northern Ireland than down here.

I love taking pictures of the American flag. I have a blog that I post pictures that I've taken and others have taken of flags.

This is one I took on a recent trip to Aberdeen, NC. It was flying over a car dealership.. It is actually the background on my desktop.

Great photo Pam. The three photos I took were over a business too! Do you have a North Carolina flag too?

Ina... I'll look through my pictures... but on that day this was the only flag picture I took. If I don't have one, I could find one to take a picture of.

I really like your pictures.. thanks for sharing.

thanks ~ Pam

I was hoping to see lots of flags from different nationalities! I was paying my SIL a birthday visit yesterday. She lives about 7 miles from me. It was a windy day and the flags at ther neighbour's place were really flapping in the wind, which made me notice she had a Dutch flag. Looking in my SIL's back yard I saw the old British Union Jack waving in the wind too. The Union Jack used to be our flag until 1965 when the Maple Leaf flag became our national symbol.

I did find one near me - and then I found another one on a hotel. I just had to wait for a windy day . When I'm in town next week I hope to find some more variety - I don't know what's outside the parliament building, got to be something!!

I didn't realise that you'd only had the maple since 1965, Ina.
Now, if only this challenge had been before we were up in the North for the weekend I could have got loads of Union Jacks .

We've got 8 stars on the flag. 7 represent the Big Dipper and in the upper right corner of the flag is the 8th star, the North Star, representing the northern most state.

I was waiting for a good gust to carry the state flag up but the wind wasnt cooperating with me!

I can't see the shape the gold stars on the Alaska flag are set in - but the European Union flag is a blue ground with a ring of 12 gold stars.

Right, you answered that question just as I was typing . I sympathise with the lack of gusts - it took me three days to get a photo where you could see all three colours in mine!

Yes Lisa, it's really hard to catch a good shot of a flag. Either the wind isn't blowing and it just hangs limp, or the wind gusts have the flag flapping back and forth. I took at least 10 shots for each of my flag photos before I got one that had unfurled enough to show the whole flag.

I worked hard for you today, Ina. Goodness knows how many I deleted - I certainly almost totally wiped my battery out. It's soon enough after the rugby Five Nations for there still to be flags up outside pubs...
The Welsh flag (red dragon of Wales)
Scottish flag (St. Andrew's cross)
French flag
I actually didn't see an English one anywhere, and the Italian is very close to the Irish - it's red instead of orange, but when it's faded it's hard to tell which is which.
The EU flag, flying outside the Four Courts
I even found a Canadian flag - Brown Thomas is the most upmarket department store in Dublin. Originally founded by Brown and joined by Thomas the following year.By the eighties Galen Weston had full ownership of it, so I guess that's why there's a Canadian flag.

An Post flag flying over the General Post Office
Royal College of Surgeons Ireland flag
Leinster flag (Ireland is divided into 4 provinces, Leinster is the eastern *quarter* including Dublin
Irish Rugby Football Union flag
Flags of many nations - sorry for the reflections, but I had to include this. It's a glass cylinder housing the stairs for a restaurant in an old church, and currently the flags are lining the cylinder. But the glass caused awful reflections

We took a walk along the canal the other night, and as there was a good brisk breeze blowing I was able to snap this Dublin city flag on one of the house boats.

I found loads and loads of flags - you must have missed them. Even a Canadian one, and a Scottish one . Posts #18 and #19

Umm, I can see that they might look like candles because there are flames at the top, but actually they're really three little castles, each with two towers.

You are right Sabrina.....I missed them! That's an amazing variety of flags! I guess they are there, if you know where to look! The Welsh flag with the dragon is really cool! the royal colleg of surgeons of Ireland flag looks like it is upside down! The rugby/football flag is great too! And I love the cylinder....always hard to photograph, but you did a great job! Thanks for bringing this to my attention!

I actually did have a photo of this Stars and Stripes in my files, but I took another one yesterday.
And the Union Jack was last night when we were up in the North. It was very windy, which was helpful to me , given that DH was there thinking *take that photo today*!!

Two flag photos from La Rochelle.
The first one has the French tricolor and a flag to do with National Monuments.
The second one has the European Union flag, French flag and for some reason the UNICEF flag.

Sabrina, are those flags invisible or am I going blind? Would love to see them.

Doh...
We've been having a couple of problems with heating and plumbing this week, I'm a bit distracted.
I didn't actually put them in my Picasa album because I wasn't going to bother using them on my blog - I'll attach them after work when I get upstairs to my PC.
Thanks for telling me .

La Rochelle is quite a historical town - it was in a part of France that was owned by England in the Middle Ages, and has several fortified towers, I suppose you'd call them, around the perimeter of the old town. I'm still editing my photos of that part of the holiday or I'd have a write-up on my blog with some of the details . That particular tower was along part of the old ramparts.
