Default Photo challenge 119..'Shades of Gray' {3/22/11}

Photo challenge #119. Shades of Gray. Some people see life's issues in only black and white, but I tend to see things in shades of gray. Of course, there are certain life issues that are either black or white to me, but for this challenge, I'd like to see you come up with shades of gray. I did have several other ideas swirling around in my brain, but this week, I have not had time to go out and photograph them. Seeing as the past few days have been dull and gray around here, I thought I would get some gray photos. Wouldn't you know it, just as I brought my camera out, the sun came out briefly, so certain things that looked gray before, seem to look white on the pictures.....for example the barn in my first photo.

Photo Challenge Rules:
~ Have FUN with this! There are no right or wrong photos.
~ Take as many pics as you want, share the few you like best.
~ Please share only current photos, taken after the challenge was issued.
~ We CANNOT upload our photos to the SCS galleries. You may upload them as an attachment or host them from your blog or any online photo hosting site. Just provide the direct link to the photo in your post and also make sure that it is not from a password protected album.
~ Just a reminder that we are a family-friendly site if you are sending others off this site to view photos in an album hosted elsewhere.
~ You can jump in and start any of the photo challenges at anytime..
~ Again - HAVE FUN
Photo number one...a gray patch of ice in the foreground, a very light gray barn, and swirling blue gray clouds in the sky. Photo two is my silver gray car. Picture number three is the lichen in the flowering crab apple tree in my back yard. Very year, I swear I am going to have the tree cut down, and every spring, it blooms so beautifully again!

Hmm - shouldn't be much problem with grey here, it's just a case of moderately photogenic grey! I love the look of lichen on bark, so that's probably my favourite, but I also like the feeling of wide-open space in the first one. Not much snow left, I see.

Well Sabrina, that was yesterday. Today, everything is white! We've had about 4 inches and it's still falling. All school buses are canceled in our area. I just poked my nose outside and it's not very cold....perhaps just a few degrees below freezing. Hopefully, it will be our last snowfall of the season, but we often have one in April.

Wouldn't you know it - today is a sunny day with a few hazy clouds. So no atmospheric greys.
Just a pebbled path and two trees - silver birch and holly.

Sabrina, I love your first photo of the path.....love all the different shades of grey and I'm bewildered by the third picture.....is that a holly tree. We don't have any holly trees here, just shrubs!
I am sharing a photo here, although it doesn't fit the category. Lots of people have been telling me about their sightings of robins over the last week, but I had not seen any. Well, this morning, I looked out my kitchen window and I counted 11 of them sitting in the flowering crab apple tree. The picture shows the very same branch that I photographed yesterday with the lichen on it.

Gosh yes, you do have snow!! Hopefully it will indeed be your last. It's funny to think of robins being migratory when we have ours all year, but then yours are quite different anyway. 11 must have been quite a sight to see.
Holly here can grow into quite a respectable tree - we used to be able to climb the one we had in the garden when I was growing up. In the wild it's more likely to be a sort of scrubby shrub in the hedge, though.

I haven't seen a robin in fifteen years. Phoenix doesn't seem to have any robins.

Our robins are fiercely territorial - males have been known to kill each other. So you rarely see more than two together. And they're such tiny little things, too, compared to the American ones.

Fantastic photos everyone! I love seeing everyones interpretations!

Here are mine....the first is the grays on the willow tree in my backyard and the female pine grosbeak sitting in it also has her own gray. The second photo is another shot of the same willow tree, along the trunk where its a gray/brown color. You can see the fresh part where I had a moose snacking on the tree the other night. The last is a pic of my gray shoes in the snow

Goodness, I can't decide if I prefer the first or second photos. Normally it would be the one with a bird without a shadow of doubt, but that tree is fabulous.

Here's another one from me - grey kegs.

Guinness, most likely, although I suppose it could possibly be Harp lager.

Okay, haven't looked at what anyone else did yet and this is kinda creepy... uploading this from the hotel... but, on the way here seen an old old cemetary... then seen another one in Salem so grabbed the camera and walked around for a bit. it was raining all day off and on saturday and sunday up here and so when i started to shoot there it was gray and dingy out... then the sun came out hahaha... so this was converted to B/W in lightroom before export.

oh yes, I'm thinking i don't want to save these photos shot just for challenges on my blog so, Ive started a "album" on my facebook called challenge shots.

That is very atmospheric - typical that the sun comes out just when you don't want it! A great subject for the challenge.

Stacy, this is a perfect photo for this challenge. That's what happened to me too....when I went to take photos of a grey day, suddenly the sun came out. Turning it into a black and white photo still shows all the shades of grey.
I think cemetaries are great places for taking pictures......I don't find it creepy at all.
Great idea to have a special folder for all your challenge photos. I just have mine hidden away among my other pictures.

I took two of these in work last week and never got round to uploading them. Today I thought the grey of the gull's wings and the grey roof would be another good shot, even with that wonderful blue summer sky. I did find a flag near work - but today was a still day with almost no wind, and you couldn't even see the green on the flag, just the orange and white - so I'll have to wait for some windier weather

It's just like the first one here today, where you can see it raining at the back of the photo. Great capture of the rainbow, though I think I prefer the brooding atmosphere of the first shot.

Maria, I love both your photos. The first one is fantastic. I always love seeing the sun come out when the skies are so dark and ominous looking.
