Default Photo Challenge #109 {Jan.1/11/11} With a flash

Photo challenge #109...with a flash, and without a flash. Most of the time I turn my flash off, because the flash on my little Nikon point and shoot is too strong. However, sometimes I like to see the difference using a flash on the same subject makes. I had to work two 12 hour night shifts on my weekend off, so I didn't really have time to get out and seek a subject. But I managed to find a good subject right inside the house. The photos speak for themselves.....my favourite orchid. First photo is with flash, second, without.

Photo Challenge Rules:
~ Have FUN with this! There are no right or wrong photos.
~ Take as many pics as you want, share the few you like best.
~ Please share only current photos, taken after the challenge was issued.
~ We CANNOT upload our photos to the SCS galleries. You may upload them as an attachment or host them from your blog or any online photo hosting site. Just provide the direct link to the photo in your post and also make sure that it is not from a password protected album.
~ Just a reminder that we are a family-friendly site if you are sending others off this site to view photos in an album hosted elsewhere.
~ You can jump in and start any of the photo challenges at anytime..
~ Again - HAVE FUN

This sounds like a great challenge, Ina. I use my flash a lot, but rarely at full strength. Beautiful orchid - I think I like the non-flash photo better, but the colours are so much more vivid in the flash one.

I don't think I can change the strength of the flash on my little point and shoot.

Ina, that is a nice orchid. My Mother used to raise orchids. I haven't used a flash in a gazillion years! Might have to wait until my night blooming cactus starts blooming.

Ina, sometimes when I had to use the flash on my point and shoot and it was just too much I would tape a small piece of tissue paper over the flash to defuse it some.
Great challenge. I tried taking pictures today of a scrapbook layout I did and I used the flash I really didnt like the look then I took one with out a flash and was much happier with the results.

OK, there's not a huge difference in these, but you can tell which was with and which was without. I'd being going to take a picture for a Collection of China thimbles, but with this week's challenge I thought I'd put it here. I just had to wait for a day with moderately good light.
I wonder could I get DH to cooperate with posing, that's where there'd be a huge difference.

Please overlook the dust - life is too short for dusting those little display units except any time we move house.

Sabrina, I can see some shadows in your second so I guess that is the flash photo.... I didnt see any dust tho. LOL

here is mine I did a LO of my DGD and tried taking photos with the flash because it was so dark and I think it washed out the colors...
flash

No flash

no flash by kamdlm, on Flickr

The entire LO with no flash, The shadow you do see is from a desk light and an over head light I had on.

What a beautiful layout, Kathy. But then, you have a great subject to start with . It's so pretty and girlie, perfect for your granddaughter.
Nope, the shadow was the non-flash one, side-lit through the window.

DH was going to sit and pose, but I did far better by grabbing some candid shots while he was on the phone and being natural. The only problem was the background - mobile reception in our house is very patchy, and he always stands in the window...
Natural (mostly tungsten) lighting,
Bounced flash off ceiling
Flash directly forwards

big difference there! I have a flash a friend gave me. it was for a minolta film camera and works with my camera but not like one made for my dslr would. anytime I use it I bounce it off the ceiling and sometimes that is still too much.... maybe the next thing I buy (it will be a while) will be a proper flash for my Sony a500. I just got an 85mm lens I am loving at the moment so no new camera toys for a while.

"""Nope, the shadow was the non-flash one, side-lit through the window.""" I had a Duh moment. I see now when I scroll across your pictures it tells me that. I see that is why the shadow is from the side.

It bummed me that my old Olympus flash was just more trouble than it was worth to use with my current camera - being for an old SLR I'd have had to set it manually every time for the different crop factor on the lens. So I splashed out on the one that goes with my E3, because I've always used it a lot. But a new lens is good too .

Ah, you should hear him sing - that was what first attracted me.

Kathy, that's an awesome page of your granddaughter! The photos are precious and I love the spray of flowers between! It seems that I prefer the rich color of the photos without flash!
Sabrina, same with your photos of your DH.......I prefer the one without the flash. I love the progression of the pictures....from talking to laughing, to being fully engaged in the conversation!
