Arrow Photo Challenge #1: Summer's End (9-21-08)

Welcome to the first SCS Photo Challenge!

Here's an easy and simple enough one to get us started. I don't know what the weather has been by the rest of you, but here in North Carolina, it's been absolutely beautiful outside this past week! And they're calling for another one just like it. The temps are perfect! Summer is coming to a close and autumn is slowing moving in. I'm sure we'll have some more hot days to come but for now my windows are open and the breeze is cool, with the slight scent of fall on it. I'm outside every chance I can get now and I usually have my camera close at hand.

So this week, in honor of the first day of Fall, spend a little time outside and try to capture the last bit of summer. How does summer's end speak to you through the camera? Maybe through a fading flower or plant, the kids playing outside, a last splash in the pool? In other words, go outside and take some pictures before summer is gone!!

Post your best shot by Saturday. And we'll all give feedback. Then a different challenge will be posted on Sunday. If you need any help or have ?'s, just ask!

Simple and clear enough for everyone?

Things to remember:
~ Have FUN with this! Don't put any extra pressure on yourself. We're all learning as we go! There are no right or wrong photos.
~ It's ok if you take 100 pictures or just one, but pick the one or two that you think best represent the challenge to share with everyone, not all 100 though!
~ Share only current photos, taken after the challenge was issued, and not something from last month, last year.
~ Please share photos taken by you.
~ We CANNOT upload our photos to the SCS galleries. You may upload them as an attachment but if you get a message saying you have exceeded your limit, you may host them from your blog or any online photo hosting site such as Flicker, Pisaca, Photobucket.... Just provide the direct link to the photo in your post and also make sure that it is not from a password protected album.
~ Just a reminder that we are a family-friendly site if you are sending others off this site to view photos in an album hosted elsewhere.
~ Again - HAVE FUN!

Perfect timing.
Chris and I just got back from a week in the Mountains of NC.
We went to my hometown and during the visit we ended up going from Gatlinburg TN to Blowing Rock NC and many places in between. It was a great week.

This picture was taken from the "Rock" in Blowing Rock and your looking at Grandfather Mountain.

Taken with our new Rebel Canon camera.
I'm still learning its many features.

Oh I'm jealous! I love heading over to the NC mountains! And we're overdue for a trip!

That's a neat shot lined up between the branches, which are starting to look a bit de-leafed!

Totally up to you or whenever it's most convenient. You just have a whole week to use however you would like for getting your pictures taken. You might have a special place you want to get to for taking them - backyard, lake, woods, hiking, wherever. And a week should give everyone plenty of time to squeeze it in between work, making dinner, doing the laundry, feeding the kids, stamping cards.... that sort of thing, esp. since this is an outside project. If you have that "this is a fabulous shot" feeling after the first picture, by all means share it!

Summer is still in the air in our neck of the woods.
I took this shot yesterday morning and you can
feel a slight breeze as though the winds are changing.
Here's hoping for cooler weather.

Up here where I live summer does not sty around long. Summer to me is beautiful parks, which we don't have in flin Flon. We went to Saskatoon last weekend and went for a walk in a lovely park they have there. I was in heaven!

Default challenge entry

Here is my end of summer entry: Pumpkins show up right after labor day here--and since we are in school, it is definately end of summer. this is my grandson age 3 at his first pumpkin patch. I wish the background were a bit plainer and that I had better depth of field on the rows of pumpkins.

This is a photo that I took yesterday. I went to the park to enjoy one of the last days of summer. I saw this little bee on one of the remaining flowers in the garden.

Barbie - How beautiful! Love the 'sunburst' through the trees and the sky is a lovely shade of blue! I'm sure it is still summer down there. We used to live in FL. I'm so glad to be back north again as I truly missed four seasons. And I have to tell you that every time I see ya around on here, I totally crack up at that line in your sig!

Mustardseed - What a peaceful looking park and a great view of the bridge and beautiful sky in the background. Are the leaves starting to change? They look a little yellow or is that just the type of plant they are?

C-mouse - Such a handsome little guy! I bet he enjoyed himself picking out a pumpkin! I'm sure you'll treasure this great shot for years!

MariLynn - A pretty purple flower - what is it? It's so very lovely!

Thanks ladies! Can't wait to see others! I need to get out and do some shooting to capture my own shot. Wasn't able to squeeze any in today, although we watched the most wonderful sunset while in the car this evening. Have a great day, ya'll!

Your picture reminds me of one I have from this past weekend.
My husband took the camera while were were stopped on the Parkway at Coon Manor and took a series of shots of a worm inching its way across the railing.

Your bee and purple flower are much prettier

I saw a tree in bloom today and just had to get outside and take some pictures of it. I found out online that this is a silk floss tree and it blooms like this right at the end of summer/beginning of fall, so I figured this fit the challenge!

Hope I do this right, it's been a while since I tried to post an attachment...

Yes, they started changing a few weeks ago. Unfortunately they don't last long up here. They start to fall off as soon as they change. I wish I lived in Saskatoon. That park really is lovely!

Here's mine! I'm glad I got a chance to take some pics at the Farm today before I left for Disney! I was afraid I was going to miss this challenge.

I took about 30 pics today and I'm having a hard time choosing just a few! LOL

And just so you know, I'm well aware I'll never be a great photographer. LOL I have an inexpensive point and shoot digital camera, that doesn't take the best pictures.

But I still enjoy doing it.

I roamed around in the yard when I got home for work today. If anyone was watching me they must have thought I was crazy! lol

I took a lot of pictures but the ones I decided on are a flower from the pepper plant in the garden, a wild strawberry growing in the yard, and the tall pine tree that is on the side of the house.

Sassyat30: Love the wagon photo. I wish we would go through all the seasons here. We have summer, summer, summer and more summer
I would love to live in a place where the leaves change colors and people
would decorate for harvest.

Michelle: Nice pictures. Love the strawberry! Its nice to be able
to walk out your own backyard and take pics. Makes the neighbors wonder what you are doing

Sassy - what a fabulous looking farm! I so glad you were able to share these great shots. Is it yours or someplace you were visiting? I love the weathered and aged look of the paint on it. Makes me really miss my Grandpa's barn. They torn it down a few years back. Those are some pretty flowers growing around it. And I would give anything to have a fabulous looking wagon like that all decked out for fall in my yard. Crazy - I know! Have an awesome time at Disney and take loads of pics!

Michelle, I was out roaming my yard this afternoon too. I bet I looked like an idiot! Mostly I stayed in the woods though. Your pictures are wonderful. I'd kinda forgotten that peppers flower. I think the berry is my fav.

AWESOME pictures everyone!! Thanks for sharing them too!!

I went out today to attempt some photo's for the challenge. Here in Michigan, this is the time of year we get the migration of Canadian Geese. None of the photo's turned out....but, I *think* I figured out what I didn't do. So, I will *try* again tomorrow!! Wish me luck!!

Well I live in FL and we have summer about 350 days a year. So although it's still quite warm the one thing I've noticed the last 2 weeks or so is that the sun is starting to set much sooner. I took this this past weekend, which will probably be our last visit to the beach for the year.

I love the pictures that have been shared. I'm going to have to snap some pictures tomorrow. I need to think hard about this. It pretty much stays the same here with the exception of the grass turning brown (if it isn't already) and some trees becoming bare.

Wow Christy! That's some gorgeous bloom! I don't think I've ever seen one. Thanks for sharing!

The name of the farm is Mulberry Lane Farm. It's where I work seasonally. It's a petting farm, where the kids get to do all kinds of fun things ~ touch all the animals, ride a pony, milk a cow, take a tractor hay ride, and in the Fall, everyone gets to pick a pumpkin.

I work as a tour guide there and I love it.

The barns on the farm are original and were built in the 1890's. Maybe when I get back, I'll take some pics of the farmhouse. If you go here, you can see more about it.

My camera is all ready for Disney! I emptied the memory card yesterday and put fresh batteries in. That thing eats batteries like you wouldn't believe.
