Default Nikon d3000

I am thinking of upgrading to an SLR. I currently have a small nikon point and shoot and a Canon S5 (which I really like). I have coveted a DSLR camera for a while, taken a few camera classes and done some research online. I am not a professional photographer (nor do I plan to become one) but I do have two kids (age 10 and 6) both of which play sports (softball, soccer, basketball and teeball).

I am looking at the Nikon d3000 (I was also looking at the Canon XS but I think the Nikon feels better), mainly because of the cost. Amazon has it for about $420. My question in all this rambling is this: Am I going to wish I had waited and saved more money and bought a different camera, say a d90? Other than having slight differences what really is the difference in all these numbers? I don't really care about having video capabilities (I have a video camera that I carry to most events that I think I will want to video) and that seems to be a big comparison issue for some. I have used the site www.snapsort.com to compare but just wanted a non-technical-camera-issue opinion. And will I still be able to buy additional lenses for any level Nikon that I get?

Not a Nikon user but I do know that some Nikon cameras will not accept all the nikon lenses...That said, I don't have a clue which ones they are...You may want to do a bit more research on that part.

Thanks!
Now I found a friend who is selling her Nikon D80 with a 55-200 lens, memory card and 2 batteries for $600. Good deal, bad deal? Anybody know the lowdown on this camera?

that model is several "camera generations" old (not so old in people years.)
but,,,it is was used properly and well taken care of, it probably would serve you well.
go to KEN.com and see what the going price is for a used d80 and that lens. that will give you an idea of how good the deal is.
