Default Challenge #146 ~ Snap the Holidays {12/21/2011}

Sorry for not posting earlier. I had yet another bad cold, and then life just got in the way, so I didn't get time or a chance to take the pictures I'd planned.

So we're going with something very easy - a picture taken on Christmas Eve, one on Christmas Day, and you can use either New Year's Eve or New Year's Day. This should leave it open not to include celebrations if you don't feel like it.

Photo Challenge Rules:
~ Have FUN with this! There are no right or wrong photos.
~ Take as many pics as you want, share the few you like best.
~ Please share only current photos, taken after the challenge was issued.
~ We CANNOT upload our photos to the SCS galleries. You may upload them as an attachment or host them from your blog or any online photo hosting site. Just provide the direct link to the photo in your post and also make sure that it is not from a password protected album.
~ Just a reminder that we are a family-friendly site if you are sending others off this site to view photos in an album hosted elsewhere.
~ You can jump in and start any of the photo challenges at any time..
~ Again - HAVE FUN

My photos - apparently this tag is the only photo I took last year on Christmas Eve. We have always celebrated as a family, because my mother was French and it was a big part of Christmas for her. But I guess I'm just not really a people photographer. Last year we were out at my aunt's with my sister and her husband. We were lucky to make it because of the snow, which features in my two Christmas Day photos. We normally go for a walk while dinner is cooking - last year we didn't even have to get in the car to get all the scenic beauty you could ask for.
On New Year's Day we had a Bailey's cheesecake .

I shall try to do better on Christmas Eve this year .

Wishing everybody a Happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year, and safe travelling to those on the road over the holiday season.

Well, despite my best resolutions and bringing my camera with me to my aunt's house I still didn't take any pictures there. And apart from anything else, I had my eye on one of her calendars for one of Ina's challenges. She used to be a social worker in the local psychiatric hospital, and always has a calendar from one of the mental health charities....
So all I have is a new visitor to our bird feeders - a redpoll. We had one the first day, and since then we've had several, so I'm still working on trying to get a decent photo, and spent some of my downtime on Christmas Eve watching the feeders. Luckily the weather's turned mild enough to have the door open without freezing. A new bird is a lovely early Christmas treat .
And the scarf I knit for my aunt - a lovely Japanese wool mix of kid, silk and lambswool. It was a late decision sparked by one of the guys in work giving some wool from a fancy shop as his Chris Kindle gift in his other job - luckily those scarves knit up quickly .

I did a bit better on Christmas Day .

Lindt chocolate teddy on the breakfast table.
Beautifully packaged presents from a pen-friend who knows I love birds.
Moravian Sugar Cake - our Christmas breakfast, recipe on my blog
I had to smile when I saw the dimensional Christmas tree on the card DH made me, as mine to him also featured a dimensional tree!

Oh Sabrina, these photos are well worth sharing! I love the pretty birds, especially the one with yellow on his wing. And that scarf is beautiful....love that yarn!
I have photos from Christmas Eve, Christmas day....just waiting to see what I get on New Year's (even though I am working) I'll take a camera to work and maybe get a photo of the food table....we're doing pot luck after midnight!

The bird with the yellow on the wing is the European goldfinch - very different to the North American one . They've only been coming this year, I love to see them. In our last house we used to have about a dozen regularly. You can't see it in that photo, but they too have a bright red head. I should go and add a photo to the bird challenge!

I was just commenting on your first two photos and now I see you have posted some more. I will definitely check your blog for the recipe for the sugar cake....it looks so yummy! I loe the cards you made each other......your paper talents must have rubbed off on your DH! I'm going to study the white one, as I'd sure like to reproduce that one!

There's a link to the one he made me. He had another one in mind but apparently it would have taken too long and as usual he'd left it till almost the last minute to actually start making something.

Sabrina, Are they attached now? I can see them on my screen but then that might be my imagination..haha The wooden one was made locally, the cowboy is a reminder of my childrens ranch, and the angel was made by the Mom of a friend. TFL

Yep, now I can see them . My favourite is the wooden one, but that cowboy is a lot of fun - you wouldn't see anything like that over here. The angel looks wonderful!! I love the way so many decorations have memories attached to them, it makes decorating the tree extra special. I really missed that this year, we decided it was just one expense too many, and a fake one isn't the same to me.

Bitty Badger, I love your ornaments. The wooden bunny one is so cute and I love that you keep a cowboy as a reminder. Of course, being a crocheter myself, I always have a special place for crocheted ornaments. In the past I have made many many angels and snowflakes.

Just saw this and thought I throw in a few little pics myself. My family really hates it when the camera comes out so a lot of my pictures I take now are scenery, LOL!

Thanks for sharing .
The cat one is hilarious, and so typical. The last one is amazing, the contrast between the snow and bare leaves. It intrigues me.

I love your photos, Karen! Love the cat....they do like playing with papers, don't they? I love the snow and crimson leaves too! I can't believe you still have those leaves on the trees!

This is so typical of cats and he can't never wait long enought to get either in a box or under the wrapping paper. I have since moved the nativity set from under the tree since he likes to get close to the other animals.

As for the snow and the leaves once in a lifetime shot I believe sorry that it was taken in Oct - couldn't resist showing it though. We got about a foot of snow just prior to Halloween and our leaves had not fallen off the trees yet. The sun had melted the snow off that tree but the other two as you can see were so coated.

such cool pictures everyone! i love the one with the cat and the paper.

we had a very busy Christmas with my nephews around so I took lots of pictures. since they left we've it's been pretty dull so forgot to take pictures of New Year's Eve.

my first pic is of my nephews putting out their stockings and a plate for Santa on Christmas Eve, the second one is on Christmas, opening gifts, and the third is on Boxing Day, my mom (aka Nana) showing them how to make snow angels.

Those are great - those first two are what Christmas is all about. The snow angels one is cool.
I'll be along with a couple tomorrow - more bird-watching yesterday, but I might have managed an OK rainbow one when we were driving down the motorway this evening.

I was playing around with my new camera for these. I had to use a long shutter speed because we have blinking lights. I wanted them all to appear to be on so I used a 30 second SS. For the first shot I used f/5.6 and the other is f/22. Same subject but totally different views.

Sabrina, the first year I was divorced I bought some pine branches boughs and put them in a vase. You might consider doing that next Christmas

I finally got my photos uploaded, all except the New Year's Eve ones. I took them with my new Nikon Coolpix, and I haven't uploaded the softwear for it onto my computer yet.
First photo is of my oldest DD, wearing the antlers that I won at our work Christmas party. The second is of her modeling the top I bought her for Christmas. She's been married 10 years and expecting her first baby in May. I bought three tops for her at a maternity shop, but also went to the used clothing store and bought a couple of wide shirts and this was one of those. She liked it best of all. The third and fourth photos were taken on Christmas Day at my youngest DD's place. I really liked how you could see the house across the street on the next picture. the fourth one is of my youngest DD setting up her camera for a shot of the three of us.

Michele I like the 2nd one the best you can actually see the needles.

I have a Nikon Coolpix also it's a P100. My Kodak easyshare which I loved dearly for 8 years died a week before my oldest graduated HS - so I had to get a new one. My first one I had for about 3 days and it went back - could not for the life of me get a shot of the soccer boy on the field (sucked majorly) and to think all the research I did, I had it narrowed down to 4 cameras but #2 actually was my best choice. Oh and the graduate fixed it about 3 weeks afterwards - now the camera is hubby's when we go photo shooting together.

Michelle, those are great. I think I like the first one better, even though it's very abstract.
It will be nice for you to have local (I presume?) grandchildren, Ina. Love that red shirt, and I too like the way you can see through the window - not always easy to balance the exposure for that sort of short.

New Year's Eve - we don't really do a lot and rarely bother staying up till midnight. So my only shot is another redpoll one. Some (few) of them have much redder breasts, so I was trying to capture one of them.
New Year's Day we went out for DH to look at another bike. He was able to replace his beloved Ducati after the accident in December, and there was even enough left from the insurance for him to consider a second every-day bike. There was a partial rainbow on the drive up and a torrential downpour on the way back! Bit grainy of a photo, the car window wasn't the cleanest. And we had our last bottle of delicious French cider that we brought back from the holidays. Why, oh why, can't they make cider like that here.

I love your photos Sabrina. It's so interesting to see scenery without snow, now that we have a coating of white on everything. But on Christmas day, although we had a sciff of snow on the ground at home, when I drove to Toronto for my visit with my DD, there was no snow there either. I always love your bird photos, something so joyful and endearing to see wildlife photos.
I just noticed the date on your first posting and realize it's time for another challenge. I'd better get on that right away. I haven't had a chance to get out to take the photo that I wanted, but I just took some others in my house.
