Trust

I said to Him, Lord, I place my trust in You. And He said to me, Take my hand, and you need never fear the darkness.

Lord, I am a seeker.
I have studied Your word and
accept Your promises as truth.
I find myself at a place in my life
where You are as real to me as the air I breathe.

I no longer wander in darkness for
I have found You in sunshine and in rain
and in every breeze that blows.
I have only to open my eyes and my heart
to know You are there.

I see You in the eyes of those I meet each day.
I hope also, in time, to see You when I look in my mirror.
I pray for Your patience and understanding.
I have a long way to go,
but thankfully, I no longer travel alone.

I have learned that faith doesn't put an end to all sorrow.
It provides, instead, a shoulder to cry on
and hands that reach out to help carry the burden.
And although the pain can still be felt,
I know that it cannot consume me.

I am grateful for blessings bestowed;
I have not earned them.
Today, I can stand on the mountain top
and have no fear of the valley,
for You are with me.

~ Linda Gleason ~
Slidell, LA

If you trust me, you are really trusting God. For when you see me, you are seeing the one who sent me. I have come as a Light to shine in this dark world, so that all who put their trust in me will no longer wander in the darkness. John 12:44-46

Even though I cannot see You, I know You are there. I feel you. It came to me that You are, indeed as vital as air. Although air can be felt, it cannot be seen in ordinary circumstances; but if you pump it into a pliable container (such as a balloon), it rises to the occasion. Perhaps that is what You do with our hearts when we grant You control.

Put Your Behind In Your Past

I like what Miguel de Cervantes, the author of DON QUIXOTE, said, "Love not what you are, but what you may become." There is hope that I can always change for the better. I can become more self confident, more in charge of my life, healthier, happier -- you get the idea. And there is hope that I can change a situation -- like finding a new career or going after a new life-style.

If you're like me, making any big changes can be scary. We will have to COMMIT. And we may have to take a risk.

Let me illustrate what I mean:

Consider a performer on a trapeze. She swings back and forth. And then she encounters another trapeze bar. It is swinging toward her and it is empty. Now she has a decision to make. She may continue to hang onto her present bar, or let go and grasp the new one. But she can't do both! She can't hang onto the old and grasp the new with her other hand. She HAS to decide which she wants.

If she chooses to let go of the past and grasp the future, she finds herself suspended for a moment in mid-air. Scary! It's too late to go back and she has not yet latched onto the other bar. She is vulnerable and at risk. But she has decided to take that risk in order to move forward.

Life is like that. Sometimes you have let go of something if you want to latch onto something else. Maybe you will need to let go of an old job in order to take a new one. Or you may have to let go of an old relationship before fitting a new one into your life. You have to let go of other priorities on your time or money before grasping that new opportunity.

And for a while you may feel suspended in mid-air. You've committed to something new and let go of the past, but you have not yet grasped what is ahead. You feel vulnerable and you may be frightened. But you know that the only way you can reach the new "bar" is to let go of the old one.

But like Pumba (from "The Lion King") says, "Ya gotta put your behind in your past." Then you're ready for whatever comes next.

A prayer to encourage.

Dear Lord,
I thank You for this day,
I thank You for my being able to see
and to hear this morning.
I'm blessed because You are
a forgiving God and
an understanding God.
You have done so much for me
and You keep on blessing me.
Forgive me this day for everything
I have done, said or thought
that was not pleasing to you.
I ask now for Your forgiveness.
Please keep me safe
from all danger and harm.
Help me to start this day
with a new attitude and plenty of gratitude.
Let me make the best of each and every day
to clear my mind so that I can hear from You.
Please broaden my mind
that I can accept all things.
Let me not whine and whimper
over things I have no control over.
And give me the best response
when I'm pushed beyond my limits.
I know that when I can't pray,
You listen to my heart.
Continue to use me to do Your will.
Continue to bless me that I may be
a blessing to others.
Keep me strong that I may help the weak...
Keep me uplifted that I may have
words of encouragement for others.
I pray for those that are lost
and can't find their way.
I pray for those that are misjudged
and misunderstood.
I pray for those who
don't know You intimately.
I pray for those that don't believe.
But I thank You that I believe
that God changes people and
God changes things.
I pray for all my sisters and brothers.
For each and every family member
in their households.
I pray for peace, love and joy
in their homes; that they are out of debt
and all their needs are met.
I pray that every eye that reads this
knows there is no problem, circumstance,
or situation greater than God.
Every battle is in Your hands for You to fight.
I pray that these words be received
into the hearts of every eye that sees it
in Jesus' name. Amen!

Please tell your niece that we are so very grateful for her service. Where is she stationed? If you cannot say, I understand, our daughter was in the Navy Intel and could not let us know very much.

Ancient Telephone Networks

After having dug to a depth of 10 meters last year, Scottish
scientists found traces of copper wire dating back 100 years
and came to the conclusion that their ancestors already had
a telephone network more than 100 years ago.

Not to be outdone by the Scots, in the weeks that followed,
English scientists dug to a depth of 20 meters, and shortly
after, headlines in the English newspapers read: "English
archaeologists have found traces of 200-year-old copper wire
and have concluded that their ancestors already had an
advanced high-tech communications network a hundred years
earlier than the Scots."

One week later, "The Kerrymen," a southwest Irish
newsletter, reported the following: "After digging as deep
as 30 meters in peat bog near Tralee, Paddy O'Droll, a
self-taught archaeologist, reported that he found absolutely
nothing. Paddy has therefore concluded that 300 years ago,
Ireland had already gone wireless."

Bound To Forgive

Writer Norman Cousins said that life is an adventure in forgiveness. I think Fr. Lawrence Martin Jenco would agree.

In 1984, Fr. Jenco traveled to Beirut, dedicated to help the poorest of the poor. On January 8, 1985, he was kidnapped by Shiite Muslim extremists and held hostage for 564 days. He endured imprisonment, beatings, illness and heartbreaking periods of sorrow and loneliness. Several years after his release, he wrote a book (BOUND TO FORGIVE, Ave Maria Press, 1995) about his experiences in captivity and, more importantly, about the power of love and forgiveness.

Fr. Jenco tells about being taped like a mummy from his ankles to the top of his head each time he was transported from one place to another. He described being forced to breathe only from his nose as his mouth was stuffed with a cloth and taped shut.

He tells of times when his captors said they were going to kill him and he waited for the bullet to go through his head. Other times he was dressed up and told he was going home, only to have his spirits dashed when he was later informed they were teasing.

He remembers being chained hand and foot, donning a plastic bag on his head, and left in a two-foot by six-foot closet. And he remembers his stench when he was denied washing for over four months.

He was later asked what lesson those of us who haven't been in such a position can learn from his experience and apply to our daily living. He said, "Just look at the madness that goes on in the world today. We lug our hates and our bigotry and prejudices from generation to generation and we pass [them] on.... We [must] stop and look at each other and say, 'I am so sorry for the hurt I caused you. I ask your forgiveness.' And then [we must] extend forgiveness and... receive forgiveness. Somewhere along the line we are going to have to do that. We're all bound to forgive."

Fr. Jenco has forgiven and can attest to the power of forgiveness. And though our hurt may not be the same as his, it is no less real. We, too, are "bound" to forgive. For when we covenant with life to earnestly forgive whatever hurts come our way, we see amazing results. We find inner peace and, often, improved physical health as well. As Dr. O. A. Battista says, "One of the most lasting pleasures you can experience is the feeling that comes over you when you genuinely forgive an enemy -- whether he knows it or not."

I've come to realize that genuine forgiveness is crucial if any of us will find peace. Whether or not it restores a broken relationship, it sets our own hearts free. Those who will be bound by the promise to sincerely forgive, will be freed from the bonds of the past. Those are Fr. Jenco's words: "We're all bound to forgive." And those who are bound to forgive are bound to be happy.

Gifts From the Heart

According to legend, a young man while roaming the desert came across a spring of delicious crystal-clear water. The water was so sweet he filled his leather canteen so he could bring some back to a tribal elder who had been his teacher. After a four-day journey he presented the water to the old man who took a deep drink, smiled warmly and thanked his student lavishly for the sweet water. The young man returned to his village with a happy heart.

Later, the teacher let another student taste the water. He spat it out, saying it was awful. It apparently had become stale because of the old leather container. The student challenged his teacher: "Master, the water was foul. Why did you pretend to like it?"

The teacher replied, "You only tasted the water. I tasted the gift. The water was simply the container for an act of loving-kindness and nothing could be sweeter. Heartfelt gifts deserve the return gift of gratitude."

I think we understand this lesson best when we receive innocent gifts of love from young children. Whether it's a ceramic tray or a macaroni bracelet, the natural and proper response is appreciation and expressed thankfulness because we love the idea within the gift.

Gratitude doesn't always come naturally. Unfortunately, most children and many adults value only the thing given rather than the feeling embodied in it. We should remind ourselves and teach our children about the beauty and purity of feelings and expressions of gratitude. After all, gifts from the heart are really gifts of the heart.

Michael Josephson

Within His Knowing

I traveled down a pleasant road,
Its pathway smooth and straight.
Flowers bloomed on either side,
A gentle breeze was blowing.
Each step I took along that path,
I walked within His Knowing.

I had not traveled very far
Before the pathway changed.
My way grew hard and stony and
A chilly wind was blowing.
Each step I took along that path,
I walked within His Knowing.

I traveled farther down that path,
The way grew steep and winding.
Small stones have turned to boulders.
A much colder wind is blowing.
Each faltering step along this path,
I still walk within His Knowing.

The road ahead I do not know,
That path I cannot see.
That road might make another bend.
The wind may roar with angry blowing.
I will walk with steadfast confidence,
I will walk within His Knowing.

Oh, Caterina, how I love that poem - Within His Knowing. I'm going to print that out and keep it in my Bible. Thank you for posting it!

After reading your poem, I came across this passage in Psalm 73 where the Psalmist was talking to God ....

23. Yet I am always with You;
You hold me by my right hand.

24. You guide me with Your counsel,
and afterward You will take me into glory.

25. Whom have I in heaven but You?
And earth has nothing I desire besides You.

26. My flesh and my heart may fail,
but God is the strength of my heart
and my portion forever.

Rita

Hello from stormy Panama City.

Thought to share this today.

BUT ONLY HE WHO SEES TAKES OFF HIS SHOES;
THE REST SIT ROUND IT AND PLUCK BLACKBERRIES.

That statement by E. B. Browning is so true. Sorry you are having stormy weather on your vacation. As I watched the Weather Channel this morning, I thought about you! I pray that you are feeling well today.

Dear sweet Rita, thanks so very much for your kindness and encouragement. So very blessed by you and so many others on SCS.

Have done well so far on this trip and appreciate all your thoughts and prayers.

This is for all dear and precious friends.

Thank You Friend

I never came to you, my friend,
and went away without
some new enrichment of the heart;
More faith and less of doubt,
more courage in the days ahead.
And often in great need coming to you,
I went away comforted indeed.
How can I find the shining word,
the glowing phrase that tells all that
your love has meant to me,
all that your friendship spells?
There is no word, no phrase for
you on whom I so depend.
All I can say to you is this,
God bless you precious friend.

Luv Ya

To: YOU
Date: TODAY
From: GOD
Subject: YOURSELF
Reference: LIFE

This is God. Today I will be handling ALL of your problems for you. I do
NOT need your help. So, have a nice day.
I love you.

P.S. And, remember...
If life happens to deliver a situation to you that you cannot handle, do
Not attempt to resolve it yourself! Kindly put it in the SFGTD (something for
God to do) box. I will get to it in MY TIME. All situations will be resolved,
but in My time, not yours.

Once the matter is placed into the box, do not hold onto it by worrying
about it. Instead, focus on all the wonderful things that are present in your
life now.

Now, you have a nice day.

Snoopy

We added a new member to our household recently. We adopted a 2 month old female beagle that we affectionately named Snoopy Girl. Snoopy shares a lot of the same qualities of the comic strip dog she was named after. Just like the "Peanuts" Snoopy our new puppy has a sense of adventure, stubbornness, and independence. She also shares his wonderful joyousness, enthusiasm for life, and boundless appetite. Most of all, though, our Snoopy shares her namesake’s loving nature. She will bound up and give anyone close enough a shower of kisses. The kids and I don’t mind this at all and will laugh happily at her cheerful affection. The cats, however, often react like "Lucy" and will leap for higher ground to get away from the dreaded dog germs.

Watching my Snoopy Girl has given me a fresh lesson in living. From now on I am going to try and follow her wonderful example. Like her I am going to do my best to greet each day with energy, adventure and joy. Like her I am going to try and find enthusiasm and delight in everything that comes my way. Like her I am going to do all I can to share my love happily with everyone everywhere no matter what I get in return. It doesn’t matter, after all, if you get hugged by "Charlie Brown" or yelled at by "Lucy". All that matters is that you continue to Love.

I pray that Snoopy Girl continues to bless me with her happiness and vitality for years to come. She not only has a love of living, but also a life a loving. I think that God in His loving wisdom must have given us animals like her for a special reason. In the midst of our daily work, struggles, and details of living they remind us of what life is truly about: giving love and sharing joy. May we always clearly see the lessons they teach. May we always follow them in our hearts, souls, and lives as well.

A Simple Faith

The ravages of pain and sorrow, life's burdens, toils and cares
Have me questioning my God, at my firmest belief tears
Are you really there I wonder, you don't seem to be,
Is my God a myth? Does he really look out for me?

To trust or not I do not know I've tried so hard to do,
All that you've taught, just surrender, let it all belong to you.
Infinite silence I hear in reply He's got me so confused
Am I to stand and patiently watch - hopes shatter, plans diffuse?

What is the answer my soul pleads, I can't bear this any more
Oh Lord I just can't seem to find the key to each closed door.
Silence again, I bow my head, get down on bended knees
Perhaps I've sinned sometime, Oh Lord, reveal it please

At last upon my Creators face I clearly see a smile
He says you should have asked, you took quite a while
To see that in the midst of sorrows, pain and care
It's important not to doubt, wonder if I am ever there

For the darkest sin, the greatest pain you cause to me
Is the sin of doubt that says, You no longer do believe
When the night you faced seemed ne'er to bring a morn
When through agonizing hours you doubted you'd see the dawn

A shelter when storms blew rough, fortress when cold winds blew
A strength, comfort, solace, through it all I sheltered you
Despite all your fears one hand you sought to hold
Why falter now my child, why let your faith grow cold?

Do the clouds of pain envelope so, you fear I cannot do
All that I've promised, fear not, for I can give them all to you
My love, patience, strength and care is eternal, ever abounding
You doubt because my power seems impossible, so astounding

How can an unseen God I trust, with all my cares everyday
Is he as indomitable, competent, encompassing as they say?
I know my child the questions that you harbor in your mind
The doubts that always linger, the answers you seek to find

Despite all I've done all I continue to do
what would it take, to remove the veil, see through
All I asked was that you have, the faith of a mustard seed
I d find the answers to your questions, through darkest hours lead.

I wish that you would cease to doubt, I know no greater pain
Than to have the one I cherish most, flounder, fail me yet again
Hold fast to hope and firm belief, for I will surely show
The one that trusts with all his heart, earns blessings more and more

I have the answer to every question, the key to every door
Firm faith in me brings true peace, assurance you knock no more
Is life eternal proof enough? my child what will it be?
Faith in yourself and all your strengths? Or a simple faith in me?

Good morning all! I am asking all of you who read this to continue praying for all those in the path of the horrible hurricane which once again is headed toward the Gulf Coast of the U.S. For those who live there or have lived there in the past, memories of Katrina's devastation are still too raw and now they have to go through this again.

For people who have never been to this part of the States, it might be hard to understand why people live in area that is prone to horrible hurricanes, but for many this is the only home they have ever known. They returned after Katerina or never left because their roots are here. There is so much more to the Gulf region beside what people see of New Orlean. Much of produce, sugar, oil and many other commodities are produced here. We will all feel the impact of this deadly storm.

Please keep all people in this region in your thoughts and prayers. Thank you.

Barb, thanks for the reminder to pray for the people who may be in the path of the hurricane. They certainly do need our thoughts and prayers.

HAPPY LABOR DAY TO EVERYONE!

Labor is the burden of our being,
A weight that weds us firmly to the earth,
Blessed servitude that serves a common meaning
On which each may erect a sense of worth.
Remember, then, the beauty of a calling
Demanding both integrity and skill:
A dancer in the drifts of early morning,
Yet traveling towards sunset through sheer will.

Greetings to one and all

Number 111

“You haven’t changed a bit,” I said as I pulled the old burgundy colored hymnbook from the shelf. I’m not in the habit of talking to books but it might be interesting if this particular hymnbook could talk back to me.

I have a collection of old hymnbooks that friends have given me or I have gathered from various places over the years but this hymnbook was special. The old hymnbook with an arched church window etched on the front and the words “Tabernacle Hymns” looked quite the same as it did the first time I saw it. An edge or two was frayed but it was still in good condition. I opened it up and inside the cover was the date, 1957, so it would have been fairly new when it was given to me. I remembered this hymnbook well because it was the very first one that I had used as I learned to play the piano. Tucked away in the back of that old hymnbook I found the numbers that I had written down and titles that I had underlined as I learned to play those hymns.

I was just a little girl about eleven years old and I was just beginning to learn to play the piano when Willie Slocum, the Sunday School Superintendent, came up to me after church and asked me to accompany the congregation for the opening of Sunday school that next week. I thought the idea was exciting but really scary.

I told him that I didn’t know very many songs yet but he assured me that it would be fine. He said that I would learn and he asked me what I could already play. Mostly I had played from my piano lesson books but I told him I could play number 111 in the hymnbook, At Calvary, pretty well because it was written in the key of C and had no flats or sharps. Without hesitation, Willie said that would be a great song to play next Sunday morning

I immediately went home and began practicing number 111 all week long until my family probably heard it in their sleep. I practiced it slow, I practiced it fast; I practiced it while singing, and I practiced it while Momma or Daddy sang it for me so I could get the feel of accompanying someone else.

The next Sunday came and I played number 111 and got through it just fine. Willie seemed pleased and told me to write down a list of songs that I could play and he would choose from them when he picked the hymns for Sunday school opening.

As time went on, I worked hard to learn more hymns to add to the list. I knew number 111 well by then and so did the congregation!

By the time I was a teenager, I was often playing for the worship service as well as for Sunday school. I am thankful for Willie, a Sunday school Superintendent, who believed in a little girl who he had never heard play a note. It probably wasn’t so unusual for Willie who had lived by faith for many years.

Although it was written in 1895, by William R. Newell, it’s melody and message is timeless and as needed today as much as ever. The refrain still plays in my mind as I often go back to number 111, back “At Calvary” where “mercy there was great and grace was free”.

As Willie would say, “Take your hymnbooks and turn with me to Number 111.”

Thanks Caterina, I enjoyed that. It brought many memories to mind of favorite hymns I used to sing as a child, teen, young woman and now. They never lost favor so more were added to the list just like Pamela Perry Blaine wrote in the message.

A Dog Named Mace

There was once a handyman who had a dog named Mace. Mace was
a great dog except he had one weird habit: he liked to eat
grass -- not just a little bit, but in quantities that would
make a lawnmower blush. And nothing, it seemed, could cure
him of it. One day, the handyman lost his wrench in the tall
grass while he was working outside. He looked and looked,
but it was nowhere to be found.

As it was getting dark, he gave up for the night and decided
to look the next morning. When he awoke, he went outside and
saw that his dog had eaten all the grass in the area, around
where he had been working, and his wrench now lay in plain
sight, glinting in the sun.

Going out to get his wrench, he called the dog over to him
and said, "A grazing Mace, how sweet the hound, that saved a
wrench for me."
