One day we will meet beside the river and our Lord will dry
every tear. For now, we must live in the joy of that promise and
recall that for every generation, life is hard, but God is
faithful.

Happy Wednesday to all.

I've Come To Help

You may remember the old Flip Wilson routine when someone asked the comic about his religion. He answered, "I am a Jehovah's Bystander." "A Jehovah's Bystander?" remarked his friend. "I never heard of a Jehovah's Bystander."

Flip said, "Well, they asked me to be a witness, but I didn't want to get involved."

In these troubled times, I think Edmund Burke is right. "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil," he says, "is for good men to do nothing."

We can complain about injustices, we can lament the suffering of the world and even feel sorry for the helpless plight of others. Or we can do what we can, even if it's only a little.

Theodore Roosevelt read a book by New York newspaperman Jacob Riis titled HOW THE OTHER HALF LIVES. We often think of the "other half" as living in luxury. The other half are those who are powdered and pampered. The rich and famous. Movers and shakers.

But the book did not describe the wealthiest few of society. Instead it described the slums of the city, with all its vice and crime. Families living in poverty and fear - too afraid to leave their homes after dark. The other half, said Riis, were the poor among us.

Theodore Roosevelt was moved to action. He went at once to the newspaper office where the author worked, but Riis was not in. Roosevelt left his card and wrote on it, "Have read your book and have come to help."

He did not say, "Have read your book and have come to discuss." Or, "Have read your book and have come to compliment you on your writing." He said, "Have read your book and have come to help."

"I am only one, but I am still one; I cannot do everything, but still I can do something, and because I cannot do everything I will not refuse to do the something that I can do." Nineteenth century writer Edward Everett Hale said that.

He speaks to me today.

Happy Wednesday to all, as well! As the message says no matter how little we think we can do, it can make a difference in someone's life. Random acts of kindness, pass it on!

No Admittance
==============

Wishing to encourage her young son's progress on the piano,
a mother took the small boy to a Paderewski concert. After they
were seated, the mother spotted a friend in the audience and
walked down the aisle to greet her.

Seizing the opportunity to explore the wonders of the concert
hall, the little boy rose and eventually explored his way
through a door marked "NO ADMITTANCE."

When the house lights dimmed and the concert was about to begin,
the mother returned to her seat and discovered that her son was
missing.

Suddenly, the curtains parted and the spotlights focused on the
impressive Steinway on stage.

In horror, the mother saw her little boy sitting at the piano,
innocently picking out "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star." At that
moment, the great piano master made his entrance, quickly moved
to the piano and whispered in the boy's ear,

"Don't quit. Keep playing."

Then leaning over, Paderewski reached down with his left hand
and began filling in a bass part. Soon his right hand reached
around the other side of the child and he added a running
obbligato.

Together, the old master and the young novice transferred a
frightening situation into a wonderfully creative experience.
The audience was mesmerized.

That's the way it is with God.

What we can accomplish on our own is hardly noteworthy. We try
our best, but the results aren't exactly graceful flowing music.

With the hand of God, our life's work truly can be beautiful.

So the next time you set out to accomplish great feats, listen
carefully and you can hear the voice of God whispering in your
ear, "Don't quit. Keep playing."

Feel His loving arms around you. Know that His strong hands are
playing the concerto of your life.

Remember, God doesn't call the equipped; he equips the called.

Your worst days are never so bad that you are beyond the reach
of God's grace.

And your best days are never so good that you are beyond the
reach of God's grace.

Don't Quit - Keep Playing

Kindness Of The Back Roads

Near my home there is a winding back road. It was built many years ago along the banks of a local river and it follows the river’s path as it twists and turns down the mountain to a town 16 miles away. I often take this old road because it is the fastest way to make it to the closest interstate highway. The trip down it is beautiful with its trees, pastures, and the flowing river brightening your soul. Still, it also has long stretches of rough road that can be tough on an old car. More than once I have stopped to help a motorist whose car didn’t quite make it all the way.

The latest time I did so was for a grandmother and her granddaughter. A visiting pastor had already pulled over to help and together we were able to push her old car to a wide spot off the road. She thanked us both and then thanked me again after I dropped her and her young granddaughter off at her daughter’s house. That simple "thank you" brought a warmth of joy to my heart. It felt good being able to help another soul. It felt great being able to share a little kindness in this world. I drove away feeling like the richest man in the universe.

I was remembering this time again while the news was talking of the latest financial scandal. It made me think of what the great journalist Charles Kuralt once said: "The everyday kindness of the back roads more than makes up for the acts of greed in the headlines." I pray that one day we all will be able to put being kind, helping people, and loving each other over making money. When we do, this world will be a giant step closer to the paradise that God meant for it to be.

Jesus said, "My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you." May we always love each other in our hearts, in our souls, and in our lives then. May we share our love and kindness with others everyday along whatever back roads our lives may take us. May we build a lasting wealth of loving-kindness for this life and for the next.

Good evening to everyone.

Always

All through my life it's been this way, Always.

I feel so insignificant, a minuet part of the galaxy in this world of ours.
As I look at the constellations, the dippers and vastness of the stars.
So why do I feel God should always be there when I kneel to pray.
Always coming to help me in my hour of need, in HIS own Godly way.

Why is HE always there to comfort me and make sure that I heal?
When there’s many others more deserving, this is what I feel.
HE comes when I least expect HIM and helps me through the storms.
Sometimes I’m amazed at the miracles in my life that HE performs.

Someday I hope when I formally meet HIM, HE will finally tell me why.
I will look forward to that day in Heaven when it’s just HIM and I.
HE’s been such a loving Father to me from the time that I was small.
I couldn’t have ask for anything more, for my Father gave it all.

A Brighter Day

There will be a brighter day tomorrow
Just trust in God He'll share your sorrow.
Oh lay your cares at the Saviors feet
And when you do you'll feel complete.

He'll recreate your life once torn
You'll feel like you've just been reborn.
Give praise to Him and then you'll know.
His love and strength to help you grow.

When life's hard times are very sad
He'll give you joy and make you glad.
Look to the Lord, just trust in Him
He lifts us up when we feel grim.

So don't look back, just keep on praying
You'll feel His presence softly saying
"I'll fill your cup and take your pain
You've nothing to lose but all to gain."

"Come unto me I'll give you rest
And comfort you through troubling tests."
Though it may seem long, He'll make a way
To lead you on to a much brighter day.

Ice Cream Flavors

The young man entered the Ice Cream Palace and asked, "What
kinds of ice cream do you have?"

"Vanilla, chocolate, strawberry," the girl wheezed as she
spoke, patted her chest, and seemed unable to continue.

"Do you have laryngitis?" the young man asked
sympathetically.

"Nope," she whispered, "just vanilla, chocolate, and
strawberry."

Received from Pastor Tim.

YOU'RE BLESSED

"You're blessed when you're at the end of your rope. With less of you there is more of God and His rule.

"You're blessed when you feel you've lost what is most dear to you. Only then can you be embraced by the One most dear to you.

"You're blessed when you're content with just who you are—no more, no less. That's the moment you find yourselves proud owners of everything that can't be bought.

"You're blessed when you've worked up a good appetite for God. He's food and drink in the best meal you'll ever eat.

"You're blessed when you care. At the moment of being 'care-full,' you find yourselves cared for.

"You're blessed when you get your inside world—your mind and heart—put right. Then you can see God in the outside world.

"You're blessed when you can show people how to cooperate instead of compete or fight. That's when you discover who you really are, and your place in God's family.

"You're blessed when your commitment to God provokes persecution. The persecution drives you even deeper into God's kingdom.

Thank you for what you posted a little while ago - it made me feel better. It is my birthday today, and without going into details and to use metaphors to describe my situation - I have been sitting in a bus-stop all day waiting for the bus to arrive and knowing in my heart that it never would, but still waited just in case. And when the bus didn't arrive, I wasn't surprised - but oh, so sad - you know the deep-down painful type sad - and annoyed with myself for putting myself thru it again. God told me today that I need to let go of what I can't control, but it's so hard to do - we are all taught to hope and I keep clinging to it in vain! I suppose I am at the end of that rope and have to let God have the rest of the rope! Thanks again for yr post.

NAILS IN THE FENCE

There once was a little boy who had a bad temper. His Father gave him a bag of nails and told him that every time he lost his temper, he must hammer a nail into the back of the fence.

The first day the boy had driven 37 nails into the fence. Over the next few weeks, as he learned to control his anger, the number of nails hammered daily gradually dwindled down. He discovered it was easier to hold his temper than to drive those nails into the fence. Finally the day came when the boy didn't lose his temper at all.

He told his father about it and the father suggested that the boy now pull out one nail for each day that he was able to hold his temper.

The days passed and the young boy was finally able to tell his father that all the nails were gone.

The father took his son by the hand and led him to the fence. He said, 'You have done well, my son, but look at the holes in the fence. The fence will never be the same. When you say things in anger, they leave a scar just like this one. You can put a knife in a man and draw it out. But It won't matter how many times you say I'm sorry, the wound will still be there. A verbal wound is as bad as a physical one.

Remember that friends are very rare jewels, indeed. They make you smile and encourage you to succeed. They lend an ear, they share words of praise and they always want to open their hearts to us.'

YOU ARE MY FRIEND AND I AM HONORED!

Please forgive me if I have ever left a 'hole' in your fence.

Dear Caterina, your last post really summed up exactly how I felt on my birthday - a fence full of holes - a very meaningful message. And I was very touched by your msg from my 1st post on my birthday - and thank you to Barb and Linda for your posts too - I felt very encouraged - and felt so much better yesterday because of it, and today my 5 yr old daughter is going to a birthday party with her Pre-School friends, and I will be able to sit with friends and relax. Thanks so much for starting this thread. May our Lord bless you and keep you and make his face shine upon you.

JoBear, grateful to the Lord for the encouragement He gives to you and know He will continue to do His very best for you. God only does the best.

Enjoy the birthday party with your precious daughter - 5 is such a great age, but then again every age with our children is wonderful.

So very glad you found this thread and may it always give you a lift, a smile and something to bring you joy.

Something from Erma Bombeck that she wrote when she found out she was dying from Cancer.

I would have gone to bed when I was sick instead of pretending the earth would go into a holding pattern if I weren't there for the day.
I would have burned the pink candle sculpted like a rose be fore it melted in storage.
I would have talked less and listened more.
I would have invited friends over to dinner even if the carpet was stained, or the sofa faded.
I would have eaten the popcorn in the 'good' living room and worried much less about the dirt when someone wanted to light a fire in the fireplace.
I would have taken the time to listen to my grandfather ramble about his youth.
I would have shared more of the responsibility carried by my husband.
I would never have insisted the car windows be rolled up on a summer day because my hair had just been teased and sprayed.
I would have sat on the lawn! With my grass stains.
I would have cried and laughed less while watching television and more while watching life.
I would never have bought anything just because it was practical, wouldn't show soil, or was guaranteed to last a lifetime.
Instead of wishing away nine months of pregnancy, I'd have cherished every moment and realized that the wonderment growing inside me was the only chance in life to assist God in a miracle.
When my kids kissed me impetuously, I would never have said, 'Later. Now go get washed up for dinner.' There would have been more 'I love you's'; more 'I'm sorry's.'
Bu t mostly, given another shot at life, I would seize every minute...look at it and really see it... live it and never give it back. STOP SWEATING THE SMALL STUFF!!!
Don't worry about who doesn't like you, who has more, or who's doing what
Instead; let' s cherish the relationships we have with those who do love us.
Let's think about what God HAS blessed us with, and what we are doing each day to promote ourselves mentally, physically, and emotionally. I hope you have a blessed day .

A Little Bit Hidden!

We can give strength to those that need it - just remember to keep some in reserve.
Every bit a life is being drained from you by anger, drama and distrust.
So much energy is being used for needless emotions that turn into dust.
By letting someone bring you down and giving them that kind of power.
Is only asking for trouble and makes everything good turn bitter & sour.

It seems now and then when one goes down; they try to drag you along.
But you must draw from deep within you because this is simply wrong.
Occasionally, we give so much of ourselves to others that are in dire pain,
Then find there’s nothing in us leftover, that we’re completely drained.

These are times we must meditate and heal, ‘til we again are whole.
At these times we’re not good for anyone, we need to replenish our soul.
It is good to give of yourself to others for that is what we’re supposed to do.
But next time keep a little bit extra hidden inside, something just for you

IN GOD WE TRUST

Several years ago, a friend of mine and her husband were invited to spend the weekend at the husband's employer's home. My friend, Arlene, was nervous about the weekend. The boss was very wealthy, with a fine home on the waterway, and cars costing more than her house

The first day and evening went well, and Arlene was delighted to have this rare glimpse into how the very wealthy live. The husband's employer was quite generous as a host, and took them to the finest restaurants. Arlene knew she would never have the opportunity to indulge in this kind of extravagance again, so was enjoying herself immensely.

As the three of them were a bout to enter an exclusive restaurant that evening, the boss was walking slightly ahead of Arlene and her husband.

He stopped suddenly, looking down on the pavement for a long, silent moment.

Arlene wondered if she was supposed to pass him. There was nothing on the ground except a single darkened penny that someone had dropped, and a few cigarette butts

Still silent, the man reached down and picked up the penny.

He held it up and smiled, then put it in his pocket as if he had found a great treasure. How absurd! What need did this man have for a single penny? Why would he even take the time to stop and pick it up?

Throughout dinner, the entire scene nagged at her. Finally, she could stand it no longer. She casually mentioned that her daughter once had a coin collection, and asked if the penny he had found had been of some value.

A smile crept across the man's face as he reached into his pocket for the penny and held it out for her to see . She had seen many pennies before! What was the point of this?

'Look at it.' He said. 'Read what it says.' She read the words 'United States of America '

'No, not that; read further.'
'One cent?'

'No, keep reading.'
'In God we Trust?' 'Yes!'

'And?'

'And if I trust in God, the name of God is holy, even on a coin. Whenever I find a coin I see that inscription. It is written on every single United States coin, but we never seem to notice it! God drops a message right in front of me telling me to trust Him? Who am I to pass it by? When I see a coin, I pray, I stop to see if my trust IS in God at that moment. I pick the coin up as a response to God; that I do trust in Him.

For a short time, at least, I cherish it as if it were gold. I think it is God's way of starting a conversation with me. Lucky for me, God is patient and pennies are plentiful!

When I was out shopping today, I found a penny on the sidewalk. I stopped and pic ked it up, and realized that I had been worrying and fretting in my mind about things I cannot change.

I read the words, 'In God We Trust,' and had to laugh. Yes, God, I get the message.

It seems that I have been finding an inordinate number of pennies in the last few months, but then, pennies are plentiful!

And, God is patient.

The best mathematical equation I have ever seen:
1 cross + 3 nails = 4 given

That's the whole gospel message simply stated.

Happy Fall To You.

From one pumpkin to another . . . .

A woman was asked by a co-worker, 'What is it like to be a Christian?'

The coworker replied, 'It is like being a pumpkin.' God picks you from the patch, brings you in, and washes all the dirt off of you. Then He cuts off the top and scoops out all the yucky stuff.

He removes the seeds of doubt, hate, and greed. Then He carves you a new smiling face and puts His light inside of you to shine for all the world to see.'

This was passed on to me by another pumpkin. Now it's your turn to pass it to other pumpkins.

The Wise Man And The Pearl

I love the old story of the wise man and the pearl. A traveler with a troubled heart was walking along the beach. He was headed to a small hut where an old hermit was said to live. This hermit had gained a reputation for his wisdom and kindness and had helped many people with their problems over the years. As the traveler approached the hut he saw the wise man gathering oysters from the sea for his dinner. The wise man smiled kindly to the traveler and asked him to join in the meal. As the wise man was opening a large oyster a huge pearl fell out. The traveler knew that this pearl was worth enough money to pay off his debts and take care of him for the rest of his life. He immediately asked the wise man if he could have it. The wise man smiled lovingly and without a second glance gave him the pearl.

The traveler started home thinking of his great fortune and all that he could buy with it, but while the pearl was heavy in his hands his heart was still heavy as well. After several days he returned again to the wise man’s hut. Placing the pearl in front of him the traveler said: "I no longer want this pearl, but I do want to know what you have inside of you that allowed you to give it to me without a second thought."

Like that traveler I also have much to learn, but I still hope to one day live like that wise man. I hope to give without a second glance. I hope to share without a single thought of myself. I hope to make my own life a gift of love to everyone in this world. That I believe is how God wants us all to live. We were not just put here to follow the Golden Rule, but also to live with Golden Love. We were not just put on this world to follow God’s commandments, but also to become more like God ourselves. The greatest pearl of all lies in our own souls. May we all find it, cherish it, and then share it with everyone we meet.

Smile Time for a Chuckle

Many hymnals have a hymn called "Gladly the Cross I'd Bear."

It seems that one week when the church secretary was typing the Sunday bulletin, she asked the pastor which hymn would come just before the sermon. He replied with the above-mentioned hymn.

The following Sunday the bulletin read:

Hymn No. 134: "Gladly, the Cross-eyed Bear."
