Okay great advice but right now there is soo much to see. I will try and jump in when I find something that I might be able to hold my own in. Thanks for all the tips though.
Hi Jami, I am a brand new stamper and forum user. I really appreciate the great advice you give. I am still trying to figure out what some things mean like SU or RAK so if you can throw anything else my way to help me learn the lingo here it would be really great! Thanks so much, Irisgirl

SU is Stampin' Up which is a stamp company. RAK is random act of kindness... It usually refers to sending someone a little something, a card or scrappy stuff etc..
HTH ( hope that helps)
I have been reading all the information and I must say it is great but I am totally overwhelmed by all the replies...smiles
I was wondering if somewhere there is a directory of terms. I am not sure what some of the terms stand for..??
ie RAK?
thanks.. will figure out where to post about myself a little later
back to work for me now.. shhhhhh don't tell!!

That was a very well thought out list and very well written. We all need reminders from time to time. As an elementary teacher for 20 years, I can't tell you how many times I have quoted this: To have a friend, you must first "be" a friend. Especially to fourth grade girls who start their little cliques. Now about the self pic as my avatar......... I hope this doesn't keep people from wanting to include me - but mine is my signature avatar on my ebay and etsy sites and on my business cards. I like that some people (probably insecure like I am) put pics of their pets. Some put their children or grandchildren - good idea.
Thank you again for the list, I look forward to reading more of your posts as I wander around lost..... lol....
I appreciate all the helpful tips included to make me a creative & constructive "newbie". I really do. But I gotta tell someone (?) somewhere(?) that I am feeling a lot overwhelmed & vastly intimidated. I've been printing out lists of "suggestions", tbr at a later time, about "How To Belong" when all I want to do is be a part of a small group sharing tips & techniques about card-making. And I don't want to take the time to do a lot of posting before I'm accepted.
I want to create something or other w/paper & then be able to chat w/another paper creator who will understand my enthusiam for making "something" from "nothing" (more or less). If one is expected to post here often when could one expect to create?
Perhaps this isn't the place for me. There seems to be too many rules, too much to learn about the web site before becoming involved. I am not adverse to learning someething new; far from it. This is just too much. And some are pretty full of themselves & their "helping tips to belong". Bye
Jami - Thanks so much for the great advice, you've really made me realise that to be included you've got to be involved - and it made me think - really I should be applying that to everyday life as well.
I hit the need a lift forum today because I've had a really rotten past two weeks, reading the other threads was just depressing me more, I was going to share my story on a new thread and then came across your one, alas - magical - by the end of the thread the tears had stopped and I felt much more positive. I think instead of venting I will go and comment on some cards, I love your tip about brightening someone else's day!
Thanks so much for making my day - I look forward to all the super friends I'm going to make with your tips. : )
I have been on for alittle while, but new to the level of people's skill here.
Thank you for the lovely tips. I am really happy that people view my gallery.
Thanks.

Thanks for the info, I have avoided splitcoast for a long time but finally gave in, never really had the time before. So for my question, what is RAK's? Thanks MaryLou

Random Acts of Kindness maybe?
My caution these days tends to be having personal information on any internet site. What about here? Is it safe? What kind of privacy settings are offered?
I am new here - look foward to having a look around & meeting everyone

Dear Laura.... this Jersey girl understands. I have the same issues in NJ. I have found like-minded individuals here at SCS and this "community" really is a blessing to me in so many ways. Glad to have you on board.

Hi Belle
There is a place you can check out all those crazy acronyms. It is on the bottom left of the home page. I've given you a link HERE.
RAK stands for Random Acts of Kindness. I send at least a half a dozen RAK cards out each week. HERE is a link that explains everything very nicely.
One of the threads I go to regularly to get RAK requests is HERE. Nothing to join for this one. Caterina, who started this thread, volunteers (I believe) with the CariingBridge site that helps families with terminal cancer. Sending cards to these kids really does encourage the parents as well.

Your words are so true -- kind comments always brighten my day and I try to comment on several other people's creations every day. It's good for my soul as much as theirs!

Thank you Jami - Very practical advice. Glad I read this before doing anything else. After a cup of cofee I will write a little introduction about myself - I would never have thought about doing that.
What is PM, what is RAK, what is btw? You really took the time to explain how to make friends, etc. but being new, it is very frustrating not to understand how to navigate and what abbreviations mean.

PM means private message, you can click on anyone's name and here and a box will appear that says "send private message to..." this is like an email, but through splitcoast.
RAK means Random act of kindness. If you click on "Welcome, your nickname" at the top of the page it will bring you to a page to update your details. On the left of the page is a link called "group memberships" click on that and you will see RAK. This group is all about making someone's day. You send out cards, and receive cards, and a group within RAK swaps images (wish-RAK).
Send me a message if you need more help! I don't mind helping new members out!

Jami,
what a wonderful thread!!! Great tips for anyone who joins any kind of virtual message boards. I've been a member for a while and made some good friends on SCS. A lot of them were part of the divorcing thread I started 3 years ago... Some I met through swaps, chatting in the forums and RAKs... I absolutely love the generosity of SCS members and consider this my home online

My name is Charlene (crystaldolphins). I have been an SCS member since 2008 but only became active in the last couple of months. SCS is a great place to check in to connect with other like-minded, talented people. There are social threads here too so it's not necessarily all about stamping. There are so many discussions going on that it can be distracting (ohhhhhh the hours I have lost NOT making cards but hanging out in cyber space on SCS!!!!) Sometimes, when I have had not such a great day, I check in here to read a thread where someone is helping someone else or offering to send a card, or requesting a card for someone who needs support. These things just fill me up exactly when I need it! (and this describes about 95% of the threads on here).
For the newer newbies, if you're intimidated to post photos of your creative work, someone suggested to me to just go for it because it is a way of seeing where you started and how your style changes and grows and likely improves (in addition to what others will get out of enjoying your posts). I have been stamping for a few years now and am totally ADDICTED. I am also totally addicted to SCS! There's definitely a lot of information here and it can be very confusing.
One of the best things I did was start commenting on other people's cards. Before I became active, I looked at many and even saved them to my favourites but did it anonymously. Now I know how great it feels to have someone recognize and comment on my work. It may not be 'the best card' but when you get down to it, there's always something nice you can say (and I don't mean that in an insulting way). If someone takes the time to post a comment, even if it's 2 words, it just makes my day. If it makes MY day, then I believe it makes someone else's day too! In fact, it makes my day commenting on someone else's card and if I add to my favourites, I always tell them, because I think that's special too.
Jami, just want to say that this thread is awesome. It's been around quite awhile and I'm glad to see it was revived.
P.S. for any of you who recognize my SCS name, I have changed my Avatar to my picture per Jami's first post Although my previous Avatar was very near and dear to me, it is likely that no-one could see what it was because the pictures have to be so small (it was a picture of my dolphin tattoo that is on my upper arm)
Sorry if this post is long-winded but it's Friday and my work days and weeks (seem) very long these days . . .all I want to do is get home to S T A M P!!!! Happy stamping everyone and have a fantastic weekend!
Hi Jami....
I have found your information to be of a great help to me! I am getting up the courage to start up my gallery this weekend. I am looking forward to making friends here at SCS.
Being new here Jami, I appreciate the great advice. I will slowly work my way around and did already start a gallery. I tried to leave comments for all the artwork uploaded in one day but found that there was so many that I could not possibly respond to all of them. I sure wanted to though as there seems to be some wonderfully talented people posting artwork. I will post as much as I can. I like the gallery feature though and will eventually use that more and more. Thanks again.
