Ready for a new Mix-Ability challenge?!! We hope you're having fun with these! Our goal is to make mixed media, easy, approachable and FUN! We want to convince you that no matter what your style is - you can DO it!

This week I want to challenge you to use black to shade a stamped image. I usually use grey or brown to shade, so the deeper contrast of black is a little scary for me, but let's be brave together. Here are 3 options for working this challenge out. I've made a little video to show each technique, too, using the same stamp image each time.

1. Color your image using only black ink, paint, pencil or other medium. Vary pressure or amount of water to create variation in your shading.

...or...

2. Color your image using a base color, then add shading using a black pencil.

...or...

3. Create a background, then stamp a line image over it and fill in the outline with black to create a silhouette.

Here's how I used these techniques, plus a few more tips and tricks to try!

<object height="360" width="480">
<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/f3Hie9u-NhQ?hl=en_US&version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" height="360" width="480"></object>

If you want to start these challenges in the pages of an art journal instead of a card, or on scrapbook pages, or on 3D items - please know - ANYTHING is welcome! We want you to learn and enjoy!

Please remember to put in the correct keyword (MIX20) when uploading your image. Copying and pasting the challenge keyword is recommended to avoid typos. Then come back to this thread and paste a link to the card in your gallery so we can all ooh and ahhh!

I love this video! I'll be making samples.

My samples...One is stamped in grey and cross-hatched with a grey pencil to create shadow. The other is stamped in black, and shaded with prismacolor pencils in the cool grey family, blended with gamsol.

Yellow Thoughts uses crosshatching with a single color of pencil for shading.

Silver Thoughts uses the Gamsol blending technique with several grades of cool grey prismacolor pencils.

WOW - that video was amazeballs!

Great video Dina! I love getting a little extra shading in with a pencil so I guess that's what you'll see on my card!

WOW !! what a fabulous video Dina !! all of your projects are gorgeous ! :-)

Great video Dina and fabulous samples!

Can I add just one thing to your commentary? You're right that you can use pretty much anything over anything else to add shading but the one thing you shouldn't do is use an alcohol marker (Copic' Spectrum Noir, ShinHan etc) over a waxy pencil (Prismacolor, Derwent Colorsoft etc). The solvent in the ink will "dissolve" the wax base of the pencil and you'll gum up your marker nib. Doing it the other way round is great though (pencil over the top of a marker base).

gabalot 06-14-2013 02:57 AM

DINI - Each of your three cards are wonderful! THANK YOU for creating the tutorial video! Your instruction is invaluable and so helpful to me. Though I don't yet participate in the MIX challenges, I hope to start sometime soon. :)

Thank you for that video! Your samples are gorgeous!

(I was at a local thrift store yesterday & saw a roll of drywall tape. I knew I should have picked it up, but I didn't. I hope it is still there when I go back today.)

Thank you, Joanne! Great point. I actually use an alcohol blender for pencil blending when I travel... (I know Copic doesn't recommend that, but I don't always listen!) ...so YES - do be aware that alcohol markers will act as a solvent on your wax or oil based pencils, and you may end up with residue on your marker. They are not friendly over acrylic paint either, and will leave your work sticky for a while.

Acrylic paints will resist water-based mediums, so that combination won't work really well for shading either. I do love pencil over acrylic though - it picks up all the brush strokes and wrinkles.

As always, experiment with what you have, and see what works for you... if you're worried about damaging your supplies, ask first. :)

The 'rule of thumb' I have read for mixed media is a principle from oil painting - 'fat over lean' - basically, use your heavier-bodied mediums over lighter or waterier ones. Not sure if that make sense.

FABULOUS video DINA!!! I can't wait to give this a go sometime this weekend!
Your samples are GORGEOUS!!!

Stamp Muse 06-14-2013 04:49 AM

Dina, what a fantastic video tutorial! Loved all three techniques and can't wait to give them a whirl. Although might have to "cheat" a little on the black for today's challenge as am pressed for time. Such wonderful techniques you've shared!

hobbydujour 06-14-2013 04:59 AM

Dini, you always provide directions, examples and videos in a top-notch way for these MIX challenges. It is obvious you take a goodly amount of time preparing each challenge. Thank you!

I know I could have done better - but ongoing PC problems all week followed by internet problems since last night have drained my energy.
Thanks for a "challenging" challenge, though, Dina. It was a good reason to get out my very under-used box of Conté ŕ Paris sketching pencils.

As I stated, I'm still intimidated by the concept of mixed media. I think it's the words "mixed media" that have me disturbed. We probably do mixed media all the time but actually don't call it mixed media. Thank you, Dina, for helping me push through this road block of mine.
