Challenge Title: Scratch Art Hostess: dini (Dina K)

Happy Mix-Ability day! Today I want to challenge you to do a little Scratch Art. You can do this with any oily or waxy medium that allows you to build up thick layers - I tried crayons, oil pastels, Gelatos, Art Bars, watercolor crayons, and Distress Crayons, and any of those will work for you too. You can even use a different medium for each layer.
Here's what to do:
1. Lay down a base of color (a bright color works best). (Alternatively, you can try using a pre-colored surface like a gel print or a piece of colored cardstock or designer paper.) You want a nice thick layer here, no paper showing through.
2. Add a second layer over the top. Usually a darker color works best, but you can experiment with any contrasting color. Black will give the highest contrast. Cover up the first layer as well as you can.
3. Using a pointed stylus or skewer, scratch into the colored area. Some ideas:
Add some writing to an art journal page.
Stamp an image in white ink and 'trace' the outline, then add some cross hatching or shading marks.
Use a stencil as a guide.
Doodle.
Here's a quick video to show you what I mean.
Remember, for your project to truly qualify as mixed media, you need to use at least 2 different types of art media. You can click HERE for a list of supplies you could choose from. If you want to start these challenges in the pages of an art journal instead of a card, or on scrapbook pages, or on 3D items - please know - ANYTHING is welcome! We want you to learn and enjoy!
Please remember to put in the correct keyword (MIX176) when uploading your image. Copying and pasting the challenge keyword is recommended to avoid typos. Then come back to this thread and paste a link to the card in your gallery so we can all ooh and ahhh! Go forth and create!
Cool challenge, Dina! When we were kids, along with the Etch-a-Sketch we had something permanent along these lines...the base layer was all rainbow colours, then there was some thick black gel-like medium which was sealed under a top layer of clear PVC or something like that, plus a stylus for drawing with. It was brilliant! There must have been a scraper, too for erasing the drawings and spreading the black evenly again but I don't remember that.
And - on thinking about it, I think the stylus with the rainbow board we had was shaped a little like those garden tag dies SU had last year or the year before, so the pointy end was for drawing and the wide end for smoothing it out afterwards.
Eep - sorry, it's me again . I'm so tired I could barely keep my eyes open while we watched a DVD documentary, but I just had to make something bright and happy. Thanks for a super-fun challenge, Dina. This is definitely one I will be adding to my repertoire when I have more time and less fatigue.
Thanks Dina for this fun challenge! I started with Distress Crayons (using the black for the top coat), had my image scratched out and it looked great but the crayon would smear if I touched it so I thought I would try to seal it with ModPodge (big mistake- lol!) :-)
Did you seal yours with a fixative or something else?
Had fun combining some colored pencil work, markers, and brushed on oil onto my one layer card, and doing some scratching to my border with a mini awl. Dedicated to my dad who grows wonderful tomatoes! Here's Summer tomatoes

Did a re-do of this card- adding some glitter glue, direct pad to paper, and some scratching for my plum element. Finished with washi tape, much happier with this! Here's Summer tomatoes and a plum
