Is a new challenge posted every week? Can anyone give it a shot?

Su: I use several journals. My favorite for trying things is Canson's mixed media because it accepts wet and collage techniques so well. They come in several sizes and are micro-perforated if you want to remove a piece. The paper is 98 lb with a smooth finish. Strathmore and similar products are available for a particular media if there is something specific you prefer to work with. You can also use loose papers and have them bound later.

Outlining depends on what it overlays. Generally, a soft charcoal pencil works well, but it may repel some types of media if placed over the shading. Other options include several types of india ink, alcohol based markers, oil markers (Sharpie paint markers), water based markers, and acrylic paint. Almost anything wet can be burnished with your finger if you are fast enough to smudge it before it dries.

Joan: ANYONE can play any of the challenges here on splitcoast. Just dive in and try things out. We'd love to cheer you on so post a link to your images once you've uploaded them. A new challenge is posted every week, but you can go back and try any of them at any time.

I'd also encourage you to watch for our special events: Dare to Get Dirty, Hope You Can Cling To, Virtual Stamp Night, Virtual Scrapbooking, and challenges posted by member companies within their forums.

I'm sorry we haven't gotten back to address these questions sooner. Life sometimes gets in the way.
